OK.  I won a free entry to the Double Oak or Powerman Duathlons.  I don't think I am up for Powerman, so was thinking about the Double Oak (2.5k, 20k, 2.5k).

Never done a du.  Racing strategy?

Why are you doing a duathlon?  I thought they only have them to make those of us who can't swim feel good about ourselves.  You're too good of a swimmer for that!

They have duathlons for those who don't mind running twice.

Swimming is my strongest sport.  But I like the pain of a duathlon.

Yeah, yeah.  It's free, dagnabit.  So I'm going!  ;-)

I've done one duathlon.  I ran the first first 2.5 miles at 10K pace, biked at the bottom of zone 3, second 2.5 miles wide open.  I had a blast and intend on doing the race again this year.

Todd,

Since you're the only one that did Jorge's cycling program, what did you think of it?  I started it and really like the first few weeks.  The reason I'm asking is that he offers fee based training plans that appear very similar to his cycling plan.  I've been emailing him and am seriously considering buying some of the plans.

I only did the 1st 8 weeks of the program. However, I definitely improved over those a weeks. FTP was up about 12 watts. He seems to be a good coach, and a nice guy. What type of training plan we talking here?

He offers and "iCoaching" service.  It appears that he has several different levels of training plans (for whatever distance you're doing) and tries to find the right level for you.  There isn't any log review or a lot of personal interaction (questions are via a closed forum) but every 4 weeks there is a feedback process where he reviews things and gives you the next four weeks of training (possibly at a different level).  It's not free but the price isn't too bad, about $50/month so you'd end up paying about $200 for an Olympic plan.  Way less then actually hiring a coach but a fair chunk of change nonetheless.

I talked with Jorge for a while about the "iCoaching" service.  It sounded interesting.  I think they have come up with stock plans that can be adapted every 4 weeks based on any weeknesses you are showing from the previous cycle.  I couldn't/haven't pulled the trigger because of the costs.

I have considered the coaching option here also, but haven't done that either.  Once I make a final call on Augusta, I might do one of them.

You've been putting in some pretty solid training over the last month or so.  You're ready.  You'll do great!

Good Luck!

With the race this early in the year, IMO it should be a reverse Tri.

I finally watched the 2010 Kona coverage.  Good entertainment during my 0500 hour trainer ride.

I also did a real swim workout today.  My Lats are already sore.

Does that mean you rode at 5 am or you rode for 5 hours? I'm swimming masters for the 1st time tomorrow. Pretty sure it's gonna kick my butt.

Bad time to bring this up.  I'm thinking of converting my Talon into a tri bike and building up a roadie.  Can't have too many, anyway, right?  Already bought a new crankset (Force for $120 - a deal) and some pedals.  Dunno why.  A sickness, I tell you.

Not to hijack this (but I am).  What frame do you guys like?  I plan on getting nude 3k in either one I choose:

http://www.greatkeenbike.com/main/home/cp_detail.php?id=104&nowmenuid=12&cpath=0009:&catid=0

or

http://www.flyxii.com/products_1.asp?menuid=308&id=334

Both will end up being $500 or so shipped to me.

Anyway, not counting all that stuff I have spent:

$60 on a barely used 2XU trisuit (another steal and it fits great)

$175 on 4 entries

$56 on four training tires (Hutchinson Fusion 3 for $14 apiece - again a steal)

$110 on running shoes

$39 on USAT License

$35 for Tri club and t-shirt (but I got a free du entry out of it - a wash?)

$475 for now.

I'll have to go back and look...

So far it's been 1 10mi, 1 13.1, 1 Sprint, 1 Olympic, & 1 full marathon that I've paid for. So far it's only race fees for the year.

I will need some new shoes in the next couple of months though.

Oh, what about chiropractor or PT fees? Adding Chiro in, I'm probably up to $240 or so, and I'm about to start PT today...

Hey,

Why not a bike shipping service?  Like TribikeTransport and others (there are several).  Are you going to ship or carry on the plane?  Airline fees can get ridiculous.

Anyway, I have substantial family in NO and grew up there, so if you need help in that area, let me know.  Where are you staying?

Training update: steady state 5 mile dreadmill run and 2000yds in the pool.  Nothing unusual on a normal day, but the swim was notable.

Started off my typical 2000yd swim with a 1:10 100yd set.  Great start considering how tired I was.  Then, after a while, I actually had a swimmer in the lane with me (13 yr old girl, but she could move). Very unusual to have anyone there, much less someone who could actually swim.  She was doing 30 second 50s. Scary how good these kids are. Tonight was sprint night for me anyway - I was on the hook for 500yds worth of sprints.  I was putting in 28s and 29s off the blocks in the drag suit (you know, gotta crush the kid, right?) - definitely a good bit faster than I normally push myself. We did a couple of 25 yd sprints as well. Being quite competitive she asked that I get timed - 11.96 25yd sprint off the blocks in the drag suit. Put that 13 year old in her place. :bowtie:  (in 6 months she'll probably dust me).  Take the drag suit off and put a good suit on and I'm flirting with 11 flat, even with the miserable block starts I sport these days.

All in all a good practice - I'm gonna be suffering pretty bad tomorrow. Already feeling it.

So I went to PT yesterday to figure out what's up with the knee. We learned a few things.

1. My hips are tight. Go figure. I knew that.

2. My hips collapse on the right side making my knee turn in and bind.

3. I need some flexibility.

4. I'm hard headed.

The therapist recommended I foam roll. Laughingly, I told him that I'd beat him w/ the roller if he brought it over b/c it hurts. He said okay and didn't get it. Either he didn't find the humor in that, or I really scared him. I felt bad when I had to tell him I was joking.

I harbor no ego about this - if she keeps swimming she'll be faster than me in a year, tops.  Kids that age get fast quick.  She was actually kinda upset she didn't beat me (kids).  Her parents who were there timing her and coaching her (and used me as something to motivate her) were very nice, though.  If they weren't there I never would have ended up swimming with her.
