kenj - 2011-05-13 5:26 AM For those that have tried or are trying the minimalist shoes, is there a reason you are doing that?  A friend of mine has found that it has reduced his running injuries but it was like starting over.

Just wondering the motivation for trying.

Don't we all ant t be injury free? I think that was why I wanted to give it a shot.

I agree we all want to be injury free, which is why I haven't tried them.  I don't have many running injuries and when I do it isn't something that this would have prevented (usually it is just me being stupid doing more than I should).

Hence the reason why I'm back to using my old shoes - the new more minimal shoes caused me a lot of pain. Surprised

PS I should have put a smiley face after my other comment it was more tongue and cheek! Embarassed

Don't get me wrong, I am not offering an opinion good or bad on them as I have seen people solve their problems with them and others get frustrated.  I am just saying that I am not having problems so why risk it.  Doesn't seem like the right solution for me.

The reason I asked was to try and find out what first drew you to them and if they improved your running experience.

Hey there, what are people's plan for the weekend?

I'm going to try for a bike ride tomorrow, though they're calling for rain.  If that's the case, will try to catch a spin class or ride the stationary bike at the gym.

Good news to report!  I actually ran for 2.5 miles straight this morning!  I warmed up for 1/4 mi., and cooled down for another 1/4 mi.  Super slow, but it was a good feeling to be able to accomplish that!

Awesome job Viv!!!  Way to go!

I went to lighter shoes, not minimalist by any stretch.  Brooks addiction to adrenaline. Is that why the minor pain in the IT tendon at the knee?  I don't think so.

QOTD:

Since Vivian is talking about running 2.5 miles straight...wondering about 10;1's?

Run 10 mins, walk 1...Repeat as long as necessary.

Anyone use it?

Anyone against it?

I think this is a great way for folks to start running.  Many experienced runners still do this with great times!!

Any discussion??

I have been fighting some knee troubles since Xmas.  After my run Wednesday, swelling again.  Gonna stop running until at least Monday.

Was going to run a 10k race Sunday, but suspect that is not going to happen.

If weather permits, time to bike again!  Went to spin this morning.  Will do same tomorrow, if weather crappy.  Sunday is good forecast, so might catcha longish bike ride...

Hope y'all have a good weekend...

R

PS.  I am starting the weekend with a BBQ steak & a couple glasses red wine tonite!

I like lighter because I seem to go faster. They feel better.  I've been using them a couple of months.  I think the knee issue comes from a floating knee that is aggravated when I run on hard surface. Could be wrong.  Who the heck knows.

Congrats on reaching 2.5 miles.  You can do it.  About a half mile more to go!   80% there.

Using a Galloway Method of run/walk seems pretty credible to me to start running, and seems pretty credible to me for long distance.  I plan to walk through some rest stops on the IM.  I did on the half IM.  2:20.  I'd take double that.

sounds like a great way to start a weekend!  Unfortunately, I'm swearing off alcohol for a while, at least until I lose some more weight.

I like the idea of 10/1's.  Maybe I'll try that next.  My running is very slow right now, would that be a good way to increase in speed?

Just wondering the motivation for trying.

Because it is the cool thing to do.

And I have been having fun - wearing the goofy shoes, meeting other minimalist runners, learning a new way to run, etc.  I am looking for ways to enjoy being physically active (hence the now trying out a Triathlon).  This was something fun to try.  I love wearing my VFF's.  I want to get a second pair for bumming around on the weekends.

It IS like starting over.  I bought my VFF's, joined a group and immediately did a 3 mile jog.  For a WEEK, I could barely walk.  My calves were well beyond that nice I-am-sore-and-it-feels-good-b/c-I-had-a-good-workout sore.  Going up and down stairs was like torture.

I didn't go all the way to the VFF's but I did start running in more minimal shoes last Summer. I didn't have any injuries or anything, but my calves were a little tight, and my legs were pretty stiff when I got up in the morning. A running friend of mine suggested I try some Newtons. Newton says you have to gradually ease into them, but I was comfortable right away. I now have less tightness in my calves, and I feel much better when I get up. As far as running goes, I feel like I have more spring in my step and I may be a little faster. Since the switch I have PR'd the run in an HIM by 5 minutes and in a stand alone HM by 7 minutes. A couple of months ago, I switched to Saucony Kinvaras, and I like them even better than the Newtons because they are half the price and not butt ugly.

I am thinking of giving the VFF's a try this Summer because I have a race in September that is bike-run-swim-run-swim-run-swim-run. Once you get off the bike it is point to point and self supported, so you have to carry your shoes while you swim. I was thinking I might be able to swim in the VFF's. Do you think that is possible Sherri? Plus how are they for trail runs?

Trying to catch up on the rest of the thread after a too busy week and broken internet at the office until this morning. GoGoGo asked about aero, and I am not as comfortable as I would like to be. My neck gets tired, so I don't stay in aero as long as I would like, plus if I get going any faster than 35 MPH, I start getting nervous and want my hands closer to the brakes. Mostly I am pretty good, and I love to ride my bike.

Keri, you're bike is really pretty! I remember reading about your difficulties getting comfortable and I wish I had a magic cure. You have tried everything: fit, different saddles, and you have put in time in the saddle. I use a Koobi Tri saddle, that I like a lot, but I probably would be comfortable on another saddle with the same fit.

Getting back to shoes, I retire mine between 3 and 400 miles. The equipment tracker that Ken mentioned is great for keeping track.

The Galloway method is a great way to get into running, especially longer distances.  A lot of beginners start out using this method some switch to straight running others stick with it.  Nothing wrong with it at all.

I have heard they are great for swimming - but I was also told they aren't allowed for swimming in tri's.  (Can any one confirm this?)  I plan to wear mine at the lake we go to this summer.  The only thing is - are you planning to do it all in them (swim/bike/run)?  My hubby can get in and out of his VFF's quickly, but I still struggle.  I have the KSO's, so I have to wriggle my toes in, pull up the heel, wriggle my toes more, velcro, etc.  The only reason I would use them is if I could put them on in the beginning and do the whole race in them.

I haven't done any trail running in them yet - that is on the to-do list for this spring/summer.  I had a hike planned for them and then it got rainned out (boo!).  They are nice and grippy, though, so I am comfident they will be awesome for trail running as long as I can watch out for sharp rocks.

Ice,

I've done a lot of backpacking and the old saying was 1 pound on your foot is like 5 pounds on your back. IMO, Lighter shoes will make you faster.

Great job Vi!

I have tried the 10/1 rule but it's not good for *me* mentally. Once I start walking I tend to walk longer and more often than I should.

Our weekend is SUPER busy. Here is the first pic, there will be more. This is my younger son (16) with his date for her choir banquet.

Just finished my local 5k run today.  Ran it in 27.02 which is almost 3 minutes faster than my 5k time last year!!!!

Very jazzed right now. I didn't know how fast I would be able to run as I didn't taper and had a 2 hour ride yesterday. I was hoping to go under 29 minutes - so very very happy! Yeah!!!!
