Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I was out of town for a wedding over labor day weekend. I skipped a 5 hour ride and a long swim, but was able to put in a nice 20 mile run. I'll accept the missed bike as a good time to welcome some extra recovery before hitting it hard for the next two months. |

Regular 138 Pittsburgh | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Had a good weekend....70 mile ride and 2 mile T-run on Saturday and then 11 mile run on Sunday. I'm doing Rev 3 Cedar Point HIM this weekend...goal is to really dial in my nutrition which I have yet to do during a race (can never get in enough!) After that there is nothing besides some heavy training weeks standing between me and IMAZ. Scary!! |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I did a 50 mile bike ride Saturday. That was all I could get in before my son's soccer game. I did do a short run later in the day. Sunday was a 9 mile run and then Monday I did the run leg of a sprint relay and our team came in first! That was fun. I'm still trying to decide whether I want to do a HIM the last weekend of September or just focus on training. I've done several HIMs over the years and I'm using the same nutrition I've used for those and for IMFL, so I don't feel like I need to use a HIM to dial in nutrition. I'm also thinking about signing up for a couple of organized century rides in October. A catered training day is never a bad thing. Fitting it in with my son's soccer is where the problems come up. The good thing is that a lot of his games are at 5pm this year, which gives me plenty of time for those long rides. |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I've got a HIM this Saturday, which I'm having serious second thoughts about! I don't feel like I 'need' it; I had a decent one in the spring, I know what to expect, and I've settled on my nutrition. Plus, it's a hilly course at 6,000'+ elevation, which I'm not exactly trained for! I guess I'm relieved of any pressure to PR, because that definitely ain't happening! I think I'm also going to do a couple of century rides in the next couple of months; it just seems like a more pleasant way to get the mileage in than riding solo! |

I coach a club team and our last game is scheduled for Saturday the 17th. Does anyone know if you can have someone else drop off your bike and transition bags or is it a mandatory athlete thing? |

Regular 82 United States | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread My wife and I drove to Tempe for the Labor Day weekend to check out the area and train on the course. Now that I know what it will look like, the race is definitely starting to feel real now! First of all, I'm sure glad this race is in November. It was crazy HOT (as usual) this weekend. I ran 9 miles on the run course on Saturday evening and even after the sun was down, the air was just hot and heavy. Sunday morning, I did 71 miles out on the Beeline Highway. By the time I was finishing up around 11am, I was dying. It was interesting trying to control heart rate in that heat as well. I rode out to the Beeline 5-6 miles from the hotel and rode three loops (71 miles in total). The course was pretty fast, but the steady climb up to the turnaround point on Beeline is taxing by the third loop. I noticed the wind changed directions by the end too. The rode it itself was fairly smooth, however there was a lot of debris in the shoulder. My wife and I both ended up with flats from glass on the road. Hoping they keep the rode as clean as possible during the race. Also, there's no real landmarks out there other than the smell of the landfill about halfway to the turnaround ;-). The run course seems to be extremely flat, especially around Tempe Town Lake. The area down there is nice and I'm looking forward to running it in November. With that out of the way, I'm now focused on Orangeman 70.3 September 23rd. Then, it's 8 weeks to IMAZ from there!

I don't usually do this because my numbers are usually whoafully behind, but I'm at 3200 yards, 4 hour bike just done, and I have 2 hours of running tomorrow to hit a new high for this plan. |

Yikes!! My son plays on a club team and his last game is the first or second weekend of November. Can someone else coach for you that last game? We have sub coaches a lot during tournaments since most coaches have 2 to 3 teams. How far away do you live? I'm pretty sure you have to be the one to drop off your stuff. They check to make sure you have the wristband on. Not sure if someone could sneak in with two bikes or not. |

Using Be Iron Fit (Fink) competitive plan. In a similar place - 2-3 swims per week at around 3000-3500m. 4 hour bike on Saturdays (brick with 45 min run afterwards). 2 hour long run on Sunday will be a new high (also doing a 1:15 ride that day). |

Can you describe the "climb" some more? My impression is that it is more of a grinder than a climb, but after the miles it can add up. Are we talking big ring the whole time (assuming wind isn't a big issue)? or did you drop to small ring at any point? Thanks. |

I just noticed that the first half of the out and back before the turnaround at Shea seemed to get much tougher by the third loop...like you said, a grinder more than a "climb". |

Essentially though my long swims right now top out at about 4000 yards, my long bike is supposed to be 76 miles (today actually, but I'm trying to do extra so I'm way ahead) and my long run is only 11-12 miles I think, again I'm doing extra running as well so instead of the 10 I was supposed to do last weekend I did 13. I have the feeling that my plan is very conservative and geared towards getting me across the finish line but not with a great time. I'm trying to do a little better than "just finish" so I'm hitting the bike hard in order to set myself up for a less painful 26 mile death march. |

Expert 1544 Alexandria, MN | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Oh yeah, speaking of mileage, I came over to this thread to report that I successfully rode my first century today, 101 miles at an 18.5mph average. I'm shooting for a 6 hour bike leg in Arizona, which is 18.6 mph, so I'm thrilled with the ride as I felt I did it at a little less than full effort, as if I was saving something for a long run afterwards. And there's plenty of time until the race to do a few more of these and add in a 30-60 minute brick run afterwards. |

You doing the HIM to IM Bridge plan from BT? That's the plan I'm using, which has a 2 hr run tomorrow and 4 hr bike ride last weekend. |

Regular 138 Pittsburgh | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I need some advice. I have the Rev 3 HIM on Sunday. It will be my second HIM of the season and the goal is to get nutrition dialed in, not really going for time. I'd say a B race. I woke up yesterday morning with a terrible sore throat, it was so painful. This then developed through the day into a full blown cold. I took the day off work and napped most of the day. I'm still sick today but feeling a little better. No fever, just achy, congested, and some sneezing. I have absolutely zero appetite though and have been surviving on a little chicken noodle soup. What should I do about Sunday? If I am feeling better should I race? Or do you think that would just set me up to get sicker and not recover? Arizona is obviously the primary goal and I don't want to do anything to jeopardize that. I'd be so sad to miss the race and wanted to do it as a confidence booster that I am on track for IMAZ but if I am not feeling 100% it might do the opposite. What would you guys do? |

I am planning on a day like this. I've got it on my schedule, I think its about 5-6 weeks out from the race, but I can't recall specifically. I did my longest run so far last weekend, 15 miles, and it seems like my body is taking a little longer to recover from that as compared to what I would have expected. So, its something I'm going to have to monitor. When I finish this, my chiropractor is going to deserve a whole lot of the credit. |
