It is a much tougher if you can't find a race, but you should run an all out 10k to determine what you paces should be.  That way you aren't over training and risking potential injury.  You are right about the other issue being that mixing the 2 plans you are attempting to mix are very difficult as they are both intense and designed for minimum intensity in other sports.

Don't mind me, Ken. In this case i know what I should be doing, but I'm not likely to do it :-) I can find races to get pacing from pretty easily but i don't "test" the run. I do on the bike because 1) I can recover from an all out effort without too much trouble and, 2) I know exactly what I'll do with the results in winter training.

With running, an all out effort costs sooo much in recovery time for me. Also, if i don't do at least a partial taper beforehand my pacing will be off anyway. I am doing a HM next weekend and that should give me a ballpark, but there won't be any tapering for that. Then there is training route selection. I like to mix it up and some of the turns I take really kill my pace. I'm afraid that if I get too hung up on pace, I'll pick boring flat loops. So for now at least, i guess it is HR for the run.

As for mixing focus on bike and run, you're absolutely right. But I'm like a kid at Baskin Robbins who can't pick one flavor...Happy training all.

I love that response Bill!

Off to the trainer for an hour and 3/4 ride.  It is supposed to be Saturdays long ride, but I have more time  this morning than tomorrow or Saturday with my travel schedule, so off I go!

How are the rest of you doing this week?

this week is looking like another wash for me which is frustrating. Tuesday one of my german shepperd dogs took a walk and was killed by a car. Had to pick him up and buried him at my inlaws farm and now my two year old son has a fever and mouth sores. Had to pick him up from school early yesterday and did not get a work out in. i stay home with him since my wife works and i have flexibility. When he takes a nap today, i will try and do something...

Sorry to hear about your dog and hope your son gets better! Cry

I stayed home from work yesterday.  One of my dogs is getting older and having trouble getting around.  We took her to the Vet to see how we can control the pain for to live out the rest of her life.  Heartbreaking watching your best friend get old.  We never had kids, so our dogs kinda filled that gap for us.  I have to admit, we are probably overly emotionally attached because of it.

We test once a month on the bike/swim.  Last night was the first one of the new year.  On the diet my coach has me on he generally doesn't want me going more than 80% on the bike and it's pretty hard to sustain that right now.  Last night though I did half the 20 minute test just under FTP before I blew up and had to back off to 80%.  Coach seemed to think that was a pretty solid effort right now.  Tonight, I gotta make my way to the pool for T-pace test.  Not sure how that's going to go.  I've been sick a lot lately and have spent minimal time in the pool.  Plus, I'm not really sure how the diet will effect my effort in the water yet.  I'm sure it will be interesting, but my coach is telling me not to worry about the numbers right now.  I'm losing weight and my body is responding better to only having fat as a source of energy, which are the main things.

This is the time of year to get the diet in order and get any weight off.  Once late March or early April gets here and depending on your race schedule, you will want to be at about your race weight so you can fuel your workouts properly.  Sounds like your coach agrees with that thought process.  Good that it is working!

I haven't been cutting back a lot, but enough that I have lost about 8 pounds in the last 3 weeks.  Unfortunately it is the easy pounds to lose and they will now get progressively tougher!

Cool that you went for testing. I'm actually going Saturday for some. Not sure exactly what I'm getting done yet, I'll talk to him more then.

Since getting and using my Garmin I've realized how off my other devices were. Mapmyrun on my iphone was off about .05 miles every mile. My HRM was WAYYY low sometimes. As you can see from my logs, my pace had to significantly decrease to maintain a HR, which is really discouraging. Oh well, something to work harder for.

Look forward to the testing to establish my proper zones, tri season is around the corner!

Hope everyone is well!

I hope the testing goes well Nate!!  Good to have the proper zones to train in though!

Thanks!

CyborgQueen - 2013-01-16 5:02 PM Just realized that my cycling schedule for March-May is going to be swamped!! Skinny Tire Festival - march 9-12 (meaning I'll have to give up Zion Century) Down Syndrome Century - March 27 Gran Fondo - April 8000' of climbing (most likely won't do this one) Tour de Fire - April 13, would like to do the 134 mile route Tour de Summerlin - April 20 Tour de Cure - April 27 MS150 IN Sedona - may 12-13 (forget the dates, but beginning of May) I did not register to all of them...I asked my cycling friends on what they think I should do. Seems like most of the bike rides are concentrated during those months due to overheating issues, especially for Tour de Fire which is typically in May, but so many people collasped due to heat.same goes for the Tour de Cure, it was changedfor 2013. Its the matter of deciding which ones! Not only that, its also triathlons too. I may just skip triathlons and just done one or two in the fall instead. If someone asked me to be on a team, I will do it.

Wow, that is quite a schedule DJ!  I'm jealous as most of that time will still be trainer time here!  Which Gran Fondo are you thinking of doing?

Oh I'm not doing all of them! The Gran Fondo Las Vegas. Mostly racers do that one, but 8000' ft of climbing....wow. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing that one. Like I said, I didn't register for any of them, and working on deciding which ones without burning out.

Understand that!  I did the one in San Diego a couple of years ago, lots of climbing but a lot of fun!

My hubby registered yesterday for the Garrett Co. Grand Fondo in June it's a double century and 17,000 ft of climbing. no thanks!

So sorry about you pup Eddie, so sad.

Today may be a day off - I have to go to the dentist this am to start on a new crown, but hopefully by this afternoon I will feel up to doing a short trainer ride.  Get to go back to the dentist tomorrow - yeah.

Good news here - we finally got snow to cover up all the ice!!!!!  About 6-8 inches now and still snowing! I haven't had to shovel the drive in over a month!

Hi Johanne,

I am in the Orlando area, and the following are good race organizers (a couple are just for running, and a couple for triathlons):
www.TrackShack.com (local running store, manages great road races)
www.triflorida.com (triathlons mostly in Clermont, a town about 30 minutes north of Orlando, location of the National Triathlon Training Center)
http://racetimesports.com/(mostly running races)
rocketmanflorida.com (if you're in town on May 5th, brand new triathlon at Kennedy Space Center, multiple distances)

My May race will be a sprint tri in Ormond Beach, which is just north of Daytona Beach: http://www.tomokatriathlon.com/

Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

Hi everyone, Well done to everyone who has raced already this year. I can't imagine remaining that dedicated over christmas! And a big thanks to all who replied to my question on looking after bikes. I love the detailed step by step instructions, thanks again. I was off work last week due to feeling ill. When I stopped sleeping I had a look on you tube and it was brilliant. I could adjust screws on my bike I never knew I had!. On the negative side, now I have stared very closely at my bike I notice my chain looks a lot rustier than I remember it. I will definately have to get some bike lube this weekend..As for training, well a cold front bringing ice and snow has hit the uk this week. I don't think I'll be out on the bike at the weekend so I'll have to do 1 and a half hours. on the trainer. Yuck. I will also be hitting the gym tonight after work to run on the treadmill.Well i'd betterbget up now.. it's taken a good two hours to read ll . the posts that i'd missed. Hope you all enjoy Friday. J

Sounds like a busy weekend of training Jennifer!  Enjoy it and although the trainer isn't as much fun as outside, it is usually a better workout!  Training in the bank for your race!

Happy Friday, everyone! Thanks to everyone's motivational posts and details of your training, I was able to get most of my planned training in this week, including 4 early mornings! And I forget who it was who posted about going to your swim when it was 39 degrees out, but thank you...on Tuesday of this week I felt guilty because I went to the pool when it was 70 degrees at 7pm (one reason why I love Florida!). However, when I told the coach I'd be there for the Friday 5am session I didn't realize a cold front would be coming through! So there I was this morning, 5am, 41 degrees on the pool deck! The 82 degree water felt great after I warmed up. I was the only one to show at 5, though two people came at 5:30--though one of them changed her mind and wouldn't get in the water!

Company in town for the next week will alter my schedule a bit, but my 30 week IM training plan begins the following Monday. I halfway through Don Fink's "Be IronFit" and I really like it. I'm going to try the competitive plan outlined in the book. I have never trained using heart rate zones before, though, so I think I'll struggle a little with that. Any opinions on whether using HR zones for training really makes a difference or not? I'm a bit skeptical.

Happy training!

I'm not a fan of HR.  I much prefer power for the bike and tested paces for the run.  My HR is vastly different from bike to run, beginning workout to end of workout, and even sometimes on different days.  I had a conversation last night about my Threshold testing and how wacky my HR was Wednesday on the test.  I just can't count on HR to be consistent enough to get good quality workouts.  I can use somewhat for loooooong training days when I don't have a powermeter on the bike I'm riding, but not for anything with specific intervals.  Sometimes though HR is all you have unless you can shell out the $$ for a powermeter on every bike you own.  hmmmmmmmmm!  LOL Sealed

I had to take my rest day yesterday and switch my swim TT testing to tonight.  I don't know what it is, but I just can't get used to the weight training in my program.  I'm just absolutely wrecked after weight training, for days!  I just don't seem to recover from it like I do S/B/R.  I talked to my coach about it, but he just says HTFU.  I know I have to trust my coach, but I'm having a hard time believing I'm doing any good if I can't get any quality workouts in. Undecided  I've only beein doing the weights program a few weeks now, so maybe I just need to give it a little time.  I'm also doing the coaches diet which is kinda contributing to my lack of energy right now too, and I'm sure effecting recovery times.  He suggested getting some protein powder and a blender and mixing up powder/fruit for a protein drink after weight workouts. IDK.

For me, it took about 4-5 weeks of adding back the strength training (CrossFit) before I felt normal after the workouts, meaning that I could actually run the next day! So I would give it a little more time. I'm on week 7 now and feel much better this week, even though I've had 2 tough Xfit sessions and 1 "easier" one (none are actually easy). I also have seen the positive effects of getting that protein shake/drink after a heavy lifting session--it definitely helps with reducing soreness the next day.

I have no power meter, and no funds at the moment to get one, so I guess I'll just try the HR training and see how it goes. Thanks!

Don't be skeptical.  Believe! Believe!  I'm an a convert to training with HR zones.  Its a decent measure for all efforts, especially running.  I live and die by HR on the run.  Testing matters, if your workouts seem too easy or too hard then retest, but unlike power or pace your zones may not change drastically in terms of bpm (at least mine don't) you just get faster in any given zone.  One of the gripes with HR is that it is a lagging indicator of effort, so it's hard to use on short interval training on a trainer, for example.  But IM training with Fink is a lot more base time than short intervals.  Over the course of a 30 week plan, some days you'll feel like a Louisville Slugger, some days the ball. If you train by HR I think it sets you up to be able to get in all of your workouts without excessive burnout.  But HR training doesn't just mean taking it easy.  Some days it keeps me from slacking.  Zone 2 (you'll be there a lot with Fink) doesn't mean take it easy, it's an effort you can sustain for a long time.  Having the measurement tells me to go as fast as I can while keeping the effort within the zone.

Product placement - I used to get erratic, super high readings for the first 10 minutes or so of a workout if i wasn't sweating enough or my shirt was rubbing up static electricity.  After reading a post on BT I got a $5 tube of electrode gel and put a little bit on the strap before each run/bike.  Since I started using it, my readings have been consistent from start to finish of a workout.

Hello All,

I might do the 5 miler instead but I haven't decided yet. It takes me a LONG time to do 10 miles and of course I have the whole "I don't want to be the last person" thing going on in my head (most or all of you probably haven't had to think that

All for now.

Good luck to you with your running goals, Kathleen. And don't talk yourself out of the 10 miler--even if you're last, you're still beating everyone still in bed or on the couch, so keep up the positive self talk, never negative! Find the mantra that will work for you in a race that you can repeat to yourself when needed. When I am feeling like I just want to stop running and curl up on the side of the road and let everyone else pass, I start singing "Just keep running, just keep running" to the tune of Dori singing "Just keep swimming" from Nemo. I also think about previous runs or races that were difficult, but that I made it through, so that lets me know that I KNOW I can do it. I just have to keep running! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Becky!

I haven't changed the distance to the 5 miler so I guess I am going to give it a shot  I will let you know how it goes.

Hey guys!!! I was planning to check in but signal on my phone sucked and I have little patience!!

I am back from Goofy and in bed!!! It was an awesome experience but it was tough!!! I actually think if I trained better on long distance I would have been fine. I normally do run/walk, which I am planning to get out of because I too think its more of a comfort zone than a need. But for the half I did 2/2 and felt really good because the goal was to take it easy. For the marathon I kept the same goal of 2/2 and was on the same pace as the half for the first 13.  I actually think I should have gone slower because after 13 I just sank.  I was tired and in pain and made friends at the medical tents thanks to chafing, blisters and needing tylenol. But I finished and besides the early mornings Disney puts on a great race that is well supported. It was a relief to see so many water stops and medical tents! The medals are awesome!! Now Im resting a sore back and feet but otherwise I feel great!

I have another marathon in March and a half in about a month. My focus in to continue with my swimming and get another lesson, get on the bike finally even its starting with spin classes and work on my cross training to build up speed. Of course getting my long runs in too.

How is everyone's week going?

That is a huge accomplishment!

I trained some of the time with HR last year (more this year) and one of the best benefits for me as a completely new cyclist was I got much better at gauging my own effort accurately.  While I have a pretty good speedometer in my brain for running I had NO idea what I was doing on the bike, but after intermittently using the HR monitor I was much better at monitoring my breathing and guessing what zone I would be in before I looked at my watch.  And until I win that point series ($500!), there's no power meter in my immediate future...

Anyone planning new equipment purchases for this year?  I'm thinking about an aero helmet. They look so funny, but I realized in looking at some photos that I am faster than some of the people who race in them around here.  What do you think, does that give me permission to wear one?

Happy Friday, everyone!  I have hit most my workouts so far this week, feeling a little sore and tired, but looking forward to a weekend of longish runs and bikes and slightly warmer temperatures here. Working a bunch of shifts next week, so we'll see what kind of a hit the training takes...

I'm considering buying a new bike (road).  Bought an aero helmet last year and glad I did.  I don't have any hard facts, but it makes me faster.  If nothing else, it reminds me to stay in an aero body position whenever I "forget" and start looking at daisies on the side of the road.  There's no way to not make them look silly, but the more of us who wear them, the less they stand out :-).  There will always be people with old school helmets and old school bikes who pass me.  Overweight fellas pass me too (but I usually get em back on the run).

Generally, the best value I get is in products that help me train more and more specifically.

I won't name names........

but there are a few of us who are pretty much always plotting to make new equipment purchases.  This has been a support group in the past!  LOLSealed

I've got a pain cave project going on now.  When it's done, I'll be looking at getting a new treadmill, wahoo fitness trainer or computrainer, and some other weight/workout equipment.  I'm also hoping to upgrade my road bike this year and I'm sure that will need some wheels.   Lastly, I'm contemplating selling one of my mountain bikes and moving to a 29er for Xterra racing and my own trail enjoyment!

rquinn23 - 2013-01-18 7:56 AM Happy Friday, everyone!

Kudos to you for getting your morning training in!  Especially this morning.  When it comes to swimming, I like it warm!

HR training isn't bad once you understand it and get used to it.  I train with power on the bike and pace for the run, but HR is always tracked and monitored as it measures the effort to deliver the desired pace or power level.  So it is not a big leap to training with HR.  Doing so makes sure that you aren't training too hard, so that you will be able to do the prescribed training completely and be able to recover for the next session as well.  It also makes sure you are training hard enough to improve, which is why you will need to retest from time to time as your fitness improves.

The people that get frustrated with it usually do because they find they need to slow down some in their training, especially on the run.  I understand the frustration, but with some patience, this will pay off big time later on in the plan as well as minimize the risk of injury.

IDK.

I agree power is better for the higher intensity intervals, my problem is the lag in time it takes to get up to the proper zone vs. the time of the interval.  But, for the longest time I made it work simply because it was all I had and I hadn't been doing this long enough to justify the cost.

I know, in addition the training your coach has you doing you are also dieting some.  Does your diet have enough calories from protein to help with the recovery?  I agree with Becky that it does take some time to adopt, but diet can help or hinder this process.

Have a great run Kathleen!!  Let us know how you do!
