Results were posted and I technically won my age group of 4 people.  LOL  Only one person older than me beat me, so I guess I didn't fare so bad.  20th/110 overall though there were a whole bunch of families walking it.

Well done! Although we mostly compete against ourselves, it's nice to do better than most

I don't know how many people there was in my AG in my race or how many older than me I beat (having spent 30 minutes working out I had the best T1 time of all, I didn't check the list any further) but I know I wasn't first in my AG or oldest as the fast girl is 2 years older and in my AG

I'm not sure if they will end up having longer speed intervals. I'm doing Jeff Galloway's run/walk program. So far I feel pretty good! Seeing lots of progress in a short time. This is the most consistently I've run in a verrrry long time.

Got it...those last couple must have been tougher and starting to push VO2 max a little with those short rest intervals.  21 flat...huh.  That's cookin'.  I ran a 21:55 on a pancake flat course in 2014 and it took a lot of focused training and a perfect race to get that sub-22.  Nice work on the run consistency - makes a huge difference, doesn't it?

By the way, that 21 puts you at a VDOT of 47 for Daniels', and checking the pacing chart at 1:38/400 you were pacing exactly as Daniels recommends for I (VO2max) pace.  Funny how the different methods all wind up the same LOL.

That is super interesting and good to know about the Daniels' method! Yeah the last couple were definitely rough, although I'd found my stride at that point. The first few I had trouble pacing.

Yeah, 21 min might be a little lofty, but my PR (from college lol) is sub 20 (I want to say it was 19:30), so I know I can get at least somewhat close and figured aiming high means I will increase my chances

Can you guys write in English please? I've never been good at maths

I just run (or bike or swim), I don't measure FPT, V02s, or ABS (? ) not even BPM Is that wrong?

You snuck that in without a big announcement. You've signed up for the worlds too? So that's 2 full distance tris in the next 12 months?

I think that's a great call and I can't wait to see you pull it off

The machine indeed

World's isn't a full...for some reason. It is technically a "long distance" tri, which is 4km swim (longer than IM), 112km bike (69.5mi), and 30k run (18.6mi). It is this awful, weird hybrid race...I don't know how to wrap my brain around it, to be honest. And, to be fair, I haven't actually received my invitation yet, but as national champion, it is an automatic bid. My wife and I decided we will go, so yeah....tentative race calendar currently looks like this...Ironman Egypt 70.3 (November), World LC Championship (May), defend national championship (August)--all while living in Egypt. If you are going to do one hard thing, why not do three...all with the difficulty turned up?!?!

Strange distance indeed.

That's great that you're going, make a vacation of it I suppose?

It's FTP - get the nomenclature right.

And no that's not wrong...you train and race successfully using just RPE (sorry!!) and you're happy doing it.  I enjoy the science behind it and I've had more success, especially running, when really micro-managing efforts as I get the best bang for the buck in every mile I run (important with my injury history).

Morning swim and strength session then I'll get in a 90 minute sweet spot workout sometime around lunch.  The pool was super-chloriney (new adjective) this morning.  I rinsed off after swimming AND took a full shower when I got home and I STILL smell like the pool.

RPE..

Retinal Pigment Epithelium?

Recreational Power Engineering?

Rate of Pregnancy Exercise? (can't be this one, haven't been pregnant for soon 18 years)

Only kidding, I know that one (after looking it up and finding the above 3)

One of the reasons I stay clear of the pool as much as I can, it can't be good for you to inhale (swallow) so much chlorine.

Replacing my run intervals with my group with a swim tonight (in the lake of course). A little stiff from yesterday's (rare) strength session and they're doing hills tonight. Also, want to take it a little easy before my last Tri of the season on Saturday.

An easy brick tomorrow and Friday off

Our aquatics director once told me that when the pool is super chlorinated and you can smell chlorine in the air, it means they had to put in a bunch to counteract the pee. So...there's that little fun nugget of knowledge.

Yeah...we'll do a vacation around Iziba. We've wanted to go there for years--it is like homo hajj. :D

Yeah, I know.  My daughter lifeguards.  I just don't understand how it can be that bad at 6 AM.

Question for the group:  Where do you track all of your training, and what's the "single source of truth"?

I just did cursory stalking of all of your training logs here and it looks like everyone except Nathalie syncs here in some way or another, but it's really inconsistent.  So if you're not using BT...what do you use?

I've been tracking here on BT since the beginning of 2011 (yes, almost 12 years) and I'll wager I have at least 95% of all workouts here, most with a lot of detail on what I do, etc.  I also use the Blogger (really fun to look back at some of my posts LOL).  I also use Training Peaks for planning and TSS tracking, Strava for some of the fun stuff like chasing KOMs, and of course Garmin Connect which holds the whole ecosystem together.  So, BT is the final authority - I'll be a mess if/when BT shuts down.

All my workout sync to Strava and Garmin connect but guess what, I rarely look at them (I bet you almost guessed that al by yourself).

I do use BT for my race reports to find info about the tris I've done before

My main set was 5 x 10' @ 90% FTP (so a comfortably hard pace) with 5' rest intervals.  First three went fine and my HR didn't even jump.  The fourth I got about a minute in and my legs were toast and I had no desire to suffer through it, so I bailed.  Still a worthwhile ride, but not what I wanted.  Progress over perfection.

All distances are strange tho when you think about it. Why is Ironman 140.6 miles? wouldn't 140.0 make more sense.

It looks very swim heavy, but bike and run more like a slightly stretched half distance than a full. It's going to be an interesting challenge for you.

I'm a fellow numbers geek, I've got training logged all over the place. All my gadgets are garmin, so everything goes through garmin connect, so I suppose everything is on there but I don't actively use it for logging my training, I only really look at resting HR/sleep trends there.

The Garmin automatically syncs with Strava (free member, used for easily comparing segments and previous runs on the same route. And the social aspect) and with the BT log, which I used to use but is now more of a hangover from when BT was busier place.

My main log is runningahead.com https://www.runningahead.com/logs/a77d9e6097e44551805f7c677edb99f7
It's got every workout saved since Jan 1 2011. Lots of custom graphs and info available, and free. Although I do make a yearly donation, but I get far more value out of the site than my tiny contribution. It has training plan features, but I don't really use it as I'm more a plan what I want to do over the course of a week than plan specific days.

Garmin also syncs with my MFP account, but that's just calories out not really a training log. Finally I have a spreadsheet on google docs, but that's more for planning. But has some big picture stuff logged.

I think if I spent more time training, less faffing around with numbers online I might be a bit fitter

But hang on, Mike has a blog? I think we need to see this (I also had a blog, in the long long ago)

It's right here on BT in my training log - tens of thousands of words of me talking about myself working out.  And complaining sometimes.  Well maybe more than sometimes.    Not like a blog on blogspot or anything.  Is that still around?

Waaaay back in the day I used Sport Tracks before BT could handle Garmin stuff, then I used here.  Like you, force of habit, and a lot of the mentor groups I was in required it (back when we had more than two LOL).  Out of curiosity I looked at my computer backups from 2010 and I found an old Sport Tracks export, which is how you backed up your data then.  I wonder if I can add another 8 months of training to my logs from back then.

Good morning, all.  Got in a decent session this morning at the gym...2.5 mile run with 10' @ T (tempo) pace, then some leg work and a short cool down swim doing some water yoga on the rests.  Labored a little during the tempo interval but unlike yesterday had the oomph to push through it.

@Nathalie:  final tri this weekend...this is your 'A' race, right?  Smart move on skipping the hill workout.

@Gretchen:  yes, odd distance.  I remember like 15 years ago there was a tri organization that was experimenting the "3/4" distance but it never really took.  I mean if you're gonna do that then it's just another couple of hours of HTFU to get your M-dot, right? (as opposed to your VDOT )

@Nicole:  See you tomorrow morning for my weekly swimming abuse.

@Andrew:  nice getting your consistency back...been seeing a lot of activity on Strava; maybe one of these days I'll run into you on Zwift if you're doing a NZ time evening ride

one of my 3 A races but if I had to choose my A A-race (not AA race), that would have to be last week's, on my home field.

Goal for this one, is to beat last year's time.

Read my race report from last year and I noted lots of U turns on the bike where I lost momentum so I practiced that today on my brick.
Also noted lots of ups and downs on the run where you go slowy uphill and let loose downhilll . I didn't practice that, for fear of falling off and hurting myself running down like a crazy maniac.

You just gotta scream like a crazy Scandinavian warrior princess.

Steep downhills are tough to pace and really hurt the next day.

I’ll have to practice my Scandinavian warrior princess scream then, does it go like that ÄÄÄÅÅÅÅÖÖÖÖÖÖÖRRRRRGGGGG?

The tough thing about running fast downhill is for the legs to keep up so you don’t fall flat on your face. It’s also a lot of fun, the kid in me loves it!

Well 99% of my riding is in the evenings, after the midgets are in bed. Usually kick off around 7:30-8pm. So every chance we could cross paths. Look for me on the flat routes haha.

Nathalie Good luck on yet another race. You have a short, sharp season don't you. Hope you finish with a result your happy with.

Winter is over! It's day 2 of spring, but it looks like winter is not finished with us. Miss 1 was up all night (in bed with us from 4am, so no morning run) and is home sick from kindy today. Well not home, at Nanas. Hopefully the grown ups avoid the bugs, but it looks like winters thrown 1 more round at us on it's way out.

Its also Kiwi fathers day this weekend, so I'm looking forwards to some breakfast in bed. Have a good weekend everyone.

@Andrew—Happy Father’s Day!!

@Nathalie—good luck this weekend!!

@Mike—3/4 IM distance? Ugh…as you said, HTFU and just do it. If you’re gonna do 75%, you might as well do the full.

I’m struggling to get into a routine post MiTi. I took a couple of days and then started swimming, but then got a giant tattoo, so no swimming for a bit. I still haven’t been on my bike and I’ve done one run since the race. I have an Oly on the 11th, but genuinely thing I can do an Oly in my sleep right now. I need to get into some kind of routine, but man, I keep letting work and life get in my way.

I think Ironman Egypt is off the table. My research partner kinda shook some sense into me, since it would mean taking time away from our already busy and limited field season. I’m quite disappointed, but it is probably for the best. I am still planning to take my bike to our field site with a trainer (that I’ll hopefully purchase in Cairo). Between running in the little stretch of paved road in front of the dig house, bike on the trainer, and my Zwim swim trainer, I’m hoping to stay in decent shape until I can get back to Cairo in January and find a gym to train in for Worlds in May.
