Just survived the 8 degree and subzero windchills here in Indiana for a 13 mile run. My hands are still numb. Hope everybody has a good weekend. It took me over 5 minutes just to type three sentences. OK I'm exaggerating Great job!!! I really am impressed with all you cold weather runners. I admit that I'm a wimp but the cold also really bothers my joints so it's not a great idea for me anyway. I taught a class and swam today. I'll swim an run tomorrow. I'm a little lost on my training plan but hopefully I can get back on schedule early in the week.

Rest tomorrow, and off on a business trip Monday and Tuesday. Nice job today! Must be hard to get training in while on business trips. My husband travels a lot and tries to get to the gym when he does but it's often a challenge. |

We're starting up a new product and were in the plant until 3am this morning. Hit the Hilton at the airport, got a good 2 hours of sleep, and back to Minneapolis this morning. Slept most of the afternoon. The project team's great, we worked through a lot of issues, and met our objectives, but I missed 4 days of training... Hope to get back in the saddle again this week... |

Yeah, funny you should mention that mr. half mary next weekend... I was just checking your blog. RUN. Also, I am highly amused that your weather thingy just says "COLD"... kinda like over the summer when mine just said "HOT". |

I'll be lucky if I can hit 1:52 (a much more reasonable goal for next week)... I may not even run it if it's below 0...o.k., I probably still will...meeting a few local BTers...we'll all suffer together... |

Veteran 149 Las Vegas | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed greetings everyone, been a while since i posted in here so i got some catching up. first of all winter weather sucks . i ran one day outside since i been home and i got a cold due to the weather change. so to all who running outside in this winter weather you more diehard than me. I might have to read the weight loss info because i had about five different dinner parties in a week to catch up with everyone plus about three nights catching up with friends over drinks . i gain about eight pounds in a week. hopefully i can get my act together this week and try to get some workouts in. |

Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed I have a question for the cyclists of the group. But first, a statement. Yesterday I went out to Death Valley to ride whilst the boyfriend ran a 20 miler. There were only two "heartbeating hills" to speak of (which I did fairly well on.) The rest of the course was pretty scenic with light rollers and mostly flats. My speedometer wasn't working so I couldn't really tell how fast I was going but I knew I wasn't going fast. I clocked about 28 miles and with the time I averaged about 12mph. The thing is, I kept zoning out! It wasn't really a "training ride" but after some thought it occured to me that I'm building base miles for a HIM and don't really know how to go fast. I'd pick up the cadence here and there but for the most part I was very ho-hum about it. Any suggestions about focusing and picking up the pace at all? (FYI I'm a philosophizing- overthinker) |

Veteran 108 Key West, Florida | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed Hi redlv, Group Rides! If ya want to get faster, you have to ride with faster! There is no hiding in the pace-line, and if your speed is not as fast as the group you will unfortunately get dropped! Have no fear . . .it will make you work harder to not get dropped the next time and you will see that you will hang on longer each time ! ! ! The key to getting faster is Endurance Miles, Intervals, Drills etc and trying to keep up with those that are faster! The fall is the century season where I build my base for the early spring racing season, then I race the Road races and Crits until the Tri-season starts . . then I try to balance the Cycling events with the Triathlons races. Hope that info helps . . .! cb redlv - 2008-01-21 3:52 PM I have a question for the cyclists of the group. But first, a statement. Master 3479 Utah | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed Stationary bike ride, and some time on the treadmill. (Notice I said some) I'll get back into it soon, right? Anywho, I have a silly question: if I've got a little bit of prickly, painful sensation along my shins when I run, shoulld I keep running through it, or should I back off and let it heal? Where's the line between the inherent discomfort of training and the body's warning signals? After having a bad experience in November with minor pain quickly becoming a major issue that took weeks to decrease, I'm a little gunshy. But at the same time, I'm rarin' and ready to go. Am I justified in my fear, or should I just work through it by more s/b/r? |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed Givemashot, First listen to what the coaches say, above what I say. But my guess is that you are feeling shin splints, which is pretty common for people who haven't run for a while. What I normally do is continue to run for 3 more minutes. If the pain gets worse, stop. If it doesn't get worse carry on. When you get back to running, most people only think they have to build up their cardio ( Heart and Lungs). But you also have to build up your muscles and joints too. And cardio improves quicker than the muscles do. I would also say slow down. You probably think you are already going very slow. Go slower. Like slower than Grandma in her walker slow. Running slowly hurts less and lets the muscles get stronger with less pain. Yes it takes longer to do your work out, so maybe go by minutes not distance. You are doing this to get healthier over the long haul, not to beat your workout pace from last week. Good thing you are female. You are more likely to do the right thing, guys would want to race themselves based on last week's work out time and wind up getting hurt. Whoo hoo, great day. Friend that I haven't seen in ten years called, and we went out to supper. Hour spin class, 2 mile brick run then 1100 yards swimming. |
