Happy monday morning all....

Got out for a trail run and... wait for it... bike outside this weekend.  Exercise is so much more tolerable when it is done outside.  The hour spin felt like 15 minutes, as opposed to the 15 minute spin that feels like an hour on the drainer.  Have a great week everyone and here's hoping for a long spring.

Almost to page 2 so I thought I would give us a bump.

If it is as nice where everyone else is as it is here in the southern tier of NY, I can understand why noone is on the computer.  Just finished a great run outside.  55º and sunny.  Ran in shorts and a sleeveless shirt.  Little chilly at the start but was fine by 10 minutes in.  Had a running partner today which made the time past fast and helped to pick up the pace a little.

Happy St. Patricks Day.  Green beer for all!

Enjoy

Wow--the group has been quiet lately.  Everyone must have spring fever!!  What does everyone have on tap for the weekend?  My wife wants to try and squeeze in one last ski day so that will be tomorrow.  Should be great spring skiing--sunny and mid 40's.  I just hope there is a enough snow!

Plan for Sunday afternoon is an 8 mile run.  That will be my longest run to date.  Should be mid 50's and sunny--Perfect!

 Enjoy the weekend.

"By the time I take the pump off the valve and close the valve, some air has leaked back out of the tire.  Is there a trick that I should know about?"

PB... Most bikes use presta valves (the skinny kind with the little twisty thing on the end).  This type of valve works by the air pressure inside of the tire pushing the little metal valve stem into place sealing off the tube.  The key here is the pressure difference between the inside of the tube and the outside of the valve.  When your bike pump is connected  and you are filling your tires the pressure in the pump is greater then in the tube (this opens the presta valve and lets air into the tube).  As soon as the pressure in the pump drops below the pressure in the tube the valve closes again.  The air you hear whooshing out of the pumpwhe you disconnect it from  your tires is just the air trapped between the end of the pump and where it's valve is located (in the body of the pump).  In other words you are just hearing the air leave the hose of your bike pump not your tires.

What up guys?  I've been missing in action from the site the last week or so.  Training has been going well.  I read the following post on a forum recently about swim stroke:

I realized I had been dropping my elbows on my stroke and not having a straighter stroke (actually minizing stroke under body).  I seem to do best with a wide stroke entry.  Then bend at wrist.  Keeping elbow near surface of water, bend at elbow (pull forearm/hand down) to ca. 90 degrees (wrist/forearm almost straight now).  Swing elbow to near side (don't touch).  (Forearm is now almost in same position as for tricep curls).  Then flex triceps- straightening arm, finishing a little away from body.  Recovery is with very high elbow, maximizing bend and triceps recovery/stretching.   One wants to keep the hand at 90 degrees to direction of swimming to maximize pull.  This necessitates a lot of wrist motion.  Do it in slow motion lying on a stool/hassock to see and get the feel.  Feels very strange at first.

One additional item- try to finish with thumb/pointer finger out of the water first.  Just like for entry- thumb/forefinger first

During my swim @ lunch I concentrated on my hand entry and exit.  Might have just been a good swim but I did pick up several seconds/100 as compared to last week.

That guy can explian just about anything!!

What about the air that leaks out of the rear end when you're standing at the urinal? Is there any relationship between that and going faster downhill?

Glad to hear everything is going well Kristen! Keep up the great work!!

Completed my first ever Tri today!!  Did the first Corning Tri at the Y.  It was an all indoor tri that was 20 minutes each of s/b/r (for the novice division which I entered).  All indoor--pool, spinning bike, treadmill (or indoor track but I hate having to do 14 laps to make a mile!!).  Good news is it was my first podium--1st Place!!  That being said, there were only 4 people in the novice division and two of them did the breast stroke for the entire swim and one of them walked the run.

It was more of a fun/friendly event than a competitive race.  They had pretty low participant turnout which was disappointing but hopefully the Y learned a few things and does it again.

I was really happy with the swim coming in at 1:44/100!  Never expected that, would have been happy with anything under 2:00.  The bike was nothing special but it felt fine.  The run was pretty good at a 7:36 pace--calves were tight in the beginning so I was worried about a cramp but that didn't happen.

All in all it was a good day.

Congrats George!!! Don't ever feel the need to tell how many people are in your age group. 1st Place is 1st Place!! Way to go!!! You gotta love a 7:36 pace on the run!! Nice work, congrats again!

Mike has your NeverReach, give him an inspire to meet up with you. He's a great person to hook up with for a ride! (It's easier for him to get out of the house and away from the "Honey Do" list when someone calls him for a ride!)

second page for multiple days?????????

I guess that would make it the "B" page.

I hope everyone is doing well. Jeff, you do what you can when you can. You'll feel great when you get the workouts in. Remember, the 15 and 20 min workouts do count!

George kicked some a$$ at his 10K this past weekend. I saw him with about 2 miles to go and he was looking very strong and just gliding along the road. Nice job!!!

TwinRacer also kicked some booty to a 1:25 1/2 marathon. I still don't understand how it is that he hasn't beaten an old man like me in a triathlon.   YET!!
