If I spend more time training with my HR in the 170's - would I be able to sustain that HR level for longer during a race?

If 170 is still within or under your lactate threshold HR then yes, training more in that time zone will allow you to sustain that level longer during a race. Generally these are called 'tempo' sessions.

I'd still suggest mixing things up though. One of the biggest mistakes the Age Groupers make is that they make their easy days too hard and their hard days too easy. You can't hit it hard all the time. Your body needs to recover.

As for the spare wheel, I'd suggest some second hand bike shops, Craiglist or kijiji. Why don't you just use your old tires for the trainer. I bought a set of new tires early in the year as my old ones were really starting to show signs of wear. I kept the old ones though and I'm going to flip it on the wheel at the end of the season when the bike will get permanently mounted to the trainer.

Caius - the reason for the 2nd wheel is I'm a bit lazy sometimes.  I have a decent amount of fall, winter riding gear so I would like to get out on a weekend if the weather allows for it and if not then just stay on the trainer.  But I want to get a proper trainer tire that will last a bit, but read that they can be a pain to mount and dismount since the rubber is so hard = cheap, second hand rear wheel to make life easier.

I'll check Craiglsit and Kijiji (that's where I got the trainer).

Hey, Guys!

I am back from Oahu, Hawaii! It was gorgeous! I actually trained while I was there!! I got in 3x run and 1 extra long bike ride. This Sunday is my All Women Luna Bar Sprint Triathlon!! I am so excited!! I am a little tired today - took a red eye & 3hour time change.

Well me & my hubby rented bikes- For me the Specialized Dolce & Hubby Ruby (mens version) all carbon. His was nice!!! I can't believe it but we did a beautiful 50mile bike ride from Waikiki to Kailua. We road around Diamond Head and around Hanuma (sp?) Bay. I loved it because the hills were very gradual. Nothing steep. It took us 6.5hours. We stopped & had lunch, shaved Ice, and took lots of pictures. I was very tempted to take a bus back (they had bike racks) but we kept going. The view were amazing!!!! I will have to download so you all can see.

I still have to unpack. Still on aloha time!

Kristina

Sounds like a great time! Of course, pictures are mandatory after a post like this!

Had a great metric century today!  4:20'ish on the ride time @ 66.57 mi.  Average speed was 15 and some change.  525 people participated in the various routes; 14 mi, 33, 66 & 100.  There were 2 rest stops at miles 17 and 42 with food, potties, water, Hammer Heed, etc.  Very organized, lots of sag vehicles, motorcycles w/radios, etc.  This was the 16th year of this event. (My 1st time to ride in it.)  Top speed was 38.  I'm too chicken (old!) above 30-35.  Swam some laps in the neighborhood pool after getting home to stretch out the muscles.  Had a wonderful ride and would like to do it again next year.

SaaaWeeeeet ride Terry! Sounds like a great time.

Your a brave man, if I were to jump into a pool after that long of a ride, I know I would sink straight to the bottom!

I have been busy since I have been back.

Great Job on your Century!! I am all about the rest stops - glad to hear they had all kinds of goodies. Is Centurys a race or is it just to finish?

I finished a Sprint Tri today!! It is a longer than usually (.5mi Swim/ 20mi Bike/ 4mi Run). It pooped me out! I think I was still sore from Wed. Hawaii Ride. It was fun and I have a great tec shirt!!! My Hubby had to work this weekend so I had my Dad come and watch the girls while I raced. I didn't see how I did in OA & AG because Dad wanted to leave and not wait for results. I have another Olympic Distance race in two weeks.

Talk to you Later,

Dang Kristina!  You are flat rocking the end of the season!

The century is just a long ride, not a race.  I'd like to try a full 100 mi sometime next year.

I'm back from about 10 days off in southern Alberta and northern Montana.  The weather alternated between desert-like and freezing.  I mostly rested but I began to think about doing Olympics and HIMs as we winded our way through the beautiful highways south of Calgary.  I started looking at the roads differently and thought:  yeah, I could cycle that!

I'm looking forward to getting back to some sort of training as I have a 10K at the end of October.

Congrats to everyone who's raced lately!

Caius,

Could you suggest some swim workouts? I have been doing one long (for me) swim per week and one intervals swim per week. Lately I'm finding it harder to get to the pool and I think it's mostly due to the fact that I'm completely bored of doing just these two workouts. I think some new workouts would motivate me.

Thanks!

I suppose it depends on what part of the season we are in; base, build, etc.

Almost got a half century today.  Started cramping at mile 47 and had to turn back.   Got 49.

What else would a triathlete do on their day off?  Coworkers at the office ask you what you are doing when they notice you are taking a vacation day the next day.  When you tell them, they just shake their heads.  They just don't get it.

Oh, and the deer were so close to the road today that I could have slapped a few momma' deer on the rump as I went by.  Some of the yearlings scared me when at 20-30 mph, you don't know if they are going to dart across the road.  One time I told myself, "This is going to hurt."  But they stayed on the side of the road, thankfully.

Great way to spend a day off!

Hey Terry, fantastic ride! Did you have to break the aero position to do the rump slapping?

Thats funny about your co-workers. When I was telling my boss about my last tri he said "I don't know why you would want to do that to yourself?" I tried explaining that it was enjoyable and fun but he wasn't comprehending.

Thanks for the info Caius!

Just did a PB 5K @ 24:13 this morning.  Our 11 year old did it with me and pulled a 31:28'ish.  He blew groceries 100 yards from the finish line, but he still finished.  I've been having him consume 250 - 300 calories before the last tri and today's race.  It dawned on me today that caloric amount is based on an, ahem, 180 lb. male (moi!).  The little guy is probably consuming too many calories before competing, thus, the upset stomach in the last tri in July and today's 5k.

It was very humid this morning and I had to throttle back somewhat on the last mile as I was feeling slightly nauseous from the heat too.

Anyone else's kids compete around 10 - 13 years old?  I was wondering how many calories he should eat 3 or so hours before competing.  That was his 1st 5k.  He weighs 95 lbs.  I can probably find it in the internet, but was curious if anyone in our group has kid's that compete.

Terry, you guys had a great race. I see speed runs in the family! Blowin' groceries is ok as long as you don't get any on your expensive shoes!

I had the pleasure of racing with the entire family today! I ran an 8k, my wife ran her very first race, a 5k, and my kids, 9 and 6, ran the kids fun run. It was a perfect day. As far as pre race calories, I made pancakes for everyone.

Attached is a pic of my little dude and me running the fun run...

Great job on the family activities this weekend. I wish my wife would be into it a bit but she's not. That's okay. Maybe one day. My little daughter though loves to run and ride her bike. She's only three and a half but I figure that next summer I'm going to enter her in a little kids race. I was at a half ironman on Saturday and they had a kids tri that started earlier and let me tell you seeing those little 4, 5 and 6 year old swimming or walking through the water and then running was absolutely the cutest thing ever. I can't WAIT to share this with her.

As for caloric intake before a race, the 'recommended' amount is somewhere between 1-1.5g of carbs per lb of body weight about 3-4 hours before the event. For a 5K race, I'm not sure just how critical this is as the event is fairly short to begin with and kids have a TON of energy. I mean, if you look at kids playing they're running around all the time from morning till night and never worry about getting enough carbs, etc. It's all FUN!

Timmeh, I love the pic of you and your son. I see you're an Adidas man (guessing). Me too. I have the same shorts actually.

So Tim, I'm looking a the picture of you and your son and I notice a couple of things that stand out for me.

1. Check out the smile on your son's face. Pure enjoyment! Love it.

2. Check out the expression on your face looking at your son. Pride! Love it. I recognize that look from my experience with my daughter and can imagine what you were feeling at that moment. They are what life is all about. Awesome.

3. Check out your son's running form vs yours. His - excellent. Yours - not so much. Now, I'm not trying to knock you. I think MOST of us adults have that form. I do as well. Kids don't though and that's the interesting thing. Kids seem to have good running form right out of the box. It's like it's built into us. Watch a kid run and you'll see high cadence, natural forward lean, good footstrike, nice pickup on the trailing foot, arms square, neck properly aligned with the spine. Seriously, check out your son. He's got amazing form! Wish we could all run like that.

In regards to the last point, the takeaway is to watch kids run and then when we go out for our runs, try to imitate that, focusing on our form.

Kids are way more flexible than we are, naturally!  I guess we get stiffer as we get older.  Another takeaway for us is stretching at least, yoga if possible.

I think my kids are going to do a pool swim tri next season.  My daughter learned to ride her two-wheeler just two weeks ago and we all did 6 k together yesterday!

Anyone see that episode of friends where Phoebe is running?
