New user 101 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Same here with the run. In my training, after century rides, I start out slow to let the legs adjust then I pick it up. I can generally hold a 7:30 pace but to give you an idea of how slow I go in training off the bike, I focus on a 9:30 to 10 pace. By mile 4 or so I am down around an 8 min/mile pace and I am planning to target that for the rest of the run. I am not counting on it, but if I am feeling good that day when I hit mile 23 or so, I'll try and drop the pace down to 7:30 or so. We'll see..... Is anyone having any little nagging aches or pains? My right knee has been bugging me the last 4 days but I have been able to push through it. I think it's from all the running I did while I was in Chicago and running on mostly concrete surfaces. |

And I'm sure my body will be telling me what it wants to do.. hopefully I dont start slow and end up even slower. |

Extreme Veteran 572 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Coming off the bike I am always flying on the run. Not sure why but I run really fast off the bike. I am afraid that if I start out slow I won't be able to get that pace back. However I would hate to blow up after six miles and death march. I just want to get my strategy solidified now before I get all pumped up during the race and do something stupid. |

Veteran 273 Virginia Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I, like you, find myself flying off the bike. I think because after all that time in the saddle I want to get away from it as fast as possible hahaha. I make a conscious effort to slow down though. Everyone is different, but in my opinion I would rather go out a little slower and then turn it up after the first half of the marathon if the legs are responding well. Negative splits always make me feel good =) jjcnbg - 2009-09-17 11:21 AM Coming off the bike I am always flying on the run. Not sure why but I run really fast off the bike. Extreme Veteran 536 Russiaville, IN | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I think a lot of people get off the bike and go to fast. If you keep a higher cadence say 85-95 your legs are use to they type of rpm's. When you get off the bike and run a 90-95 strides a minute you tend to move a little faster. I have got off the bike and felt like I was moving so slow because my legs were moving slower than my bike cadence and I found I still was running faster than I need to be. |

Veteran 215 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread this will be my first IM but everything I have read and talked to my coach and other finishers about says THE RACE DOESN'T START UNTIL THE SECOND HALF OF THE MARATHON. One of the biggest mistakes listed in "Going Long" by Friel is going out to fast in the early stages of the marathon. Keep some in reserve and you will be passing people like crazy the last 13 miles. .... but that is just what I heard, not experienced. |

Extreme Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I am planning to aim for a steady pace (1 min slower per mile than my stand alone pace, so apprx goal is 30 min slower). I too feel like I am flying off the bike, but I think my legs would give out on me if I started too fast. I plan to adjust as needed on race day, but I like to be able to look at my Garmin and say, ok just keep it at or just below a 10:00 min pace and stay there ... |

Member 53 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Just my $.02 below - For distances above a Half-Marathon, I am a fan of the 'Gallaway' method - Run/Walk combination. You can adopt any ratio you want (from 1:1 minute, to 12mins:30secs, etc.). No matter which way you go, it is a proven way to significantly push out your fatigue limit. Besides, face it, everyone is going to be walking some during the Marathon portion of IMFL - at least a bit of the aid statons...and maybe more, depending on how the day is going for folks. |

Extreme Veteran 572 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread mnation, Actually I do use a run/walk method of sorts. I use distance instead of time. I know that at the Ironman the aid stations are set up every mile so I have been training to run 1 mile then walk 30 seconds and take in my fluids and nutrition then repeat. This has definitely been helpful, especially in the summer heat! If it is real hot I extend the walk to 60 seconds. I figure if I do blow it out during the first half I can always switch to a 5/1 ratio for the end of the race. I do have marathoning experience but never with such a long workout before it. It is just so hard to judge. I have been a consistant 10 min/mile runner forever so normally pacing is not a problem. My problems started occurring in training so hard for the Ironman because I have become a much faster runner then I ever was before. I just don't quite know how to handle the newfound speed. Granted it is a problem I don't mind having Edited by jjcnbg 2009-09-18 5:25 AM |

Veteran 136 Panama City Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Spinnaker Beach Club is short of last years stopping point. They may have changed it based on your afterparty or due to congestion. Spinnaker is located east of Club LaVela and the Boardwalk. There is a small right turn off if traveling west on Front Bch, going toward the Boardwalk, that they may be trying to cut down the traffic on. Usually, racers continue straight and the police guide the traffic toward the right turn. My guess is that they are trying to control the flow of traffic... I'll have to pull my email and see where my volunteer post is. I'm looking forward to it! Plus, I'm excited about signing up for next year! |

Member 13 | Subject: Speedsuit or Westsuit for IM Florida? I just bought the Xterra Vel .02 speedsuit. I live in Hawaii where I will never use a wetsuit to compete so I bought a speedsuit hoping it will give me a little warmth and many of the same benefits of a wetsuit irt speed. The website shows it will be 68-72 so it's cold compared to Hawaii, but not that cold. I am a strong open water swimmer. Thoughts? |

It still looks unfinished and I don't know what the hold up is. The signs for "soft shoulder" are still out. Plus, there is no bike lane as many here thought there would be. Honestly, it looks as though they did a half job. That's my opinion... |

I swam the IMFL course the morning before the race last year in just a tri suit. Felt cold at first, but once I started swimming it wasn't bad at all. I wouldn't worry about it...at least in regards to temperature. I'll be wearing a wetsuit more for the speed/buoyancy than the temp. |

I believe that the finish line has been moved because they have begun to do MAJOR ROAD WORK on S. Thomas Drive in front of the Boardwalk Beach Condos. The weekend I went to workout there, the hotel was in the process of moving their large marque sign because the city planned on widening the road there. I am not TOTALLY sure if this is the reason...but it might be...just my .02!!! |

New user 84 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Just completed my first century ride. Can't really look at how long it took me since I hit every red light in town on my 25 mile bike loop...plus the town next door had a harvest festival parade today..right on my course...ended up riding down back alleys to pass the parade...was cold at the start..58 degrees..warmed up to 68...nutrition seemed to be working...had enough gels, gatorade endurance, and Smucker's PB&J's...clear blue skies...had a bunch of headwinds...just kept telling myself I would have the same thing in FL... Work schedule is going to prevent me from getting another real century ride in...bad weather last weekend forced me to do 70 miles on the trainer...talk about going insane....just want finish the race.... Keep training everyone...see you in FL Mr Steve Ironman in training |

Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Alright, Half-Iron practice race DONE. I had a great PR race (with only a tiny taper) in very rainy conditions, and on a more hilly course (for the bike, not run) than IMFL has. The best part--not once while I was out there did the thought cross my mind of "you must be insane for wanting to do an Ironman." I am still not looking forward to a 2.4 mile swim, but I am so glad that yesterday, while there was race pain, there wasn't pain that said "you're nuts, and you've got an IM in less than 7 weeks??" Also, it rained on us nearly the entire time (for the 70.3 race)--so, I've now done a race in adverse conditions and done well too. BRING IT ON IMFL (though adverse conditions are absolutely not necessary, okay God? Thanks.) |

I did the full aquabike and not once did I think I was crazy for wanting to do the full distance in 7 weeks. I was actually a bit jealous of the people that got to keep going! I think a lot of you guys are racing next weekend -- good luck and stay safe out there! |

Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Glad to hear that you are okay! What a day. I'm still trying to get rid of the crud. I've had it for over a week now. Just started back running today. It was very slow. I took a 2.5 hour nap afterwards. Which isn't a great sign after only running/walking 6.5 miles. During my run/walk, I tried to tell myself it could be worse. I could have a stress fracture or an injury that would keep me from going to IMFL. |
