Sooo, what's shaking Manatees?

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

I did a nice little brick this morning - first brick in a long, long time - felt good to know i still have it in me

Of course you do! You're wicked strong and fast these days! I'm sitting in my warm, toasty apartment, contemplating the run I really should do. On the one hand, I skipped a 5k race this morning (it was raining hard and it felt sooooo good in my bed) so I should go out and do something today. But on the other hand, it's really windy and raining and cold outside right now. I have to decide in the next 30 minutes because I've got another date tonight!

Another date! How awesome! Have fun!!!

Thank you!! But your well wishes do not solve my problem: What to wear?? I already wore a black skirt/cute sweater/black boots combo on the first date. I think the restaurant we're going to is a tiny bit too nice for jeans, but I don't really have a dress that's casual enough for dating. Ugh! Dating is so hard!

Black skirt, boots, and a different sweater?

Wow,

I can't believe February is 1/2 over!  Race season is getting closer and closer!!!

How is everyone doing with their off-season training?  any highlights, lowlighs, questions??

What are folks thinking for their race season?

I'm going to do a 5k in March, I'm excited because it's my first 'local' event - it will be in Philly -

then another 1/2 Mary in April - probably in NYC again - which would be fun, pretty sure i'll be faster because i won't be frozen!!!

and an Oly in July - other than that I'm not quite sure

I am still trying to put my schedule together.  I know I will be participating in a 10K locally in Apr.   1/2 mar is in the works for late Apr early May but it all depends upon my 1 yr testing and the fall out from it.  I have HIM on the books in mid-Sept.

I'm so glad you're doing another half mary! And a 5k! Look at you, all running like crazy.

Let's see, so far I've got:

-Three trail runs (range of 9-13 miles). They're part of a series, and you get some special T-shirt/medal if you do all three. I'm going to need to get some trail running in pretty soon!

-A 10k at the end of March. It was my first road race ever, last year, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how I do after a year of pretty decent mileage.

-The day after that 10k, a 10-miler in San Francisco that I'll just do for fun.

-Perhaps a 10k next weekend. It'd just be for fun and to try out some speed after the many months of marathon and post-mary training. I'll only do it if we get a break from the rain. (I don't mind running in the rain, but it's *hard* to get up early on a weekend when it's raining!)

-My second marathon! I haven't signed up for it yet, but I'm planning on the San Francisco Marathon in July.

Somewhere in there I'll squeeze a half marathon, a few more 5k and 10k races, and a sprint tri or two. Heh. It looks a lot crazier than I thought when I write it all out like that.

Thank you.  i have to go for routine blood work/followup in Mar. to check TSH levels and adjust or add meds if needed.  If results are good, I will have a thyrogen protocol after that.  I am going to try and push them to do the push in May after classes are out.  I do have an online class.  I don't want to miss finals or graduation.  The push entails a series of shots and some radiation and total body scan in five days.

I am still working on my race schedule for the season. I have planned on attending some races, but did not sign up yet - as I lack the confidence that I can really do them. So far, I have registered with a local 1/2 Marathon and that is all what I have committed to...

There is an Olympic distance triathlon coming up in early April which I did last year - but not sure about this year. And then, there is a HIM (my first) which I want to attempt in October.  To add on top of that, the slot I won for Alcatraz makes me debate a lot whether I'll do that or not... Freedom of choice is never easy...

I got a question about strengthening the upper body muscles that are engaged during swimming: What are good exercises to make those muscle stronger? What exercise machines in a standard gym are recommended for that purpose? Any pointer to a web site which describes such exercises?

Also, not sure how many of you check my blog, but as we discussed some time ago about workout music, I copied a snippet of my yesterday's port so you all can take advantage of it and hopefully enjoy it as much as I do. And, one of the best parts of it is - that it is free!

So are you definitely planning on the HIM? I think that sounds so great! And you'd have loads of time to get ready for October. You also seem like you're in good shape to tackle the oly in April. Alcatraz, well, so much of that would be a mental roadblock for me. It's a tough course (I'd find the swim especially intimidating), but the race is *amazing* and it's a great opportunity. You'd have a few months to prepare for it. I think you should do it! (But yes, I know it's not that simple, and you want to make sure you're going to enjoy the race.)

Re: swim strength training. I always feel ridiculous offering swim advice, but whatever. I took some lessons last year and the coach recommended a lot of core work to help with swimming. So crunches, planks, exercises that use medicine balls and stability balls. If you Google swimming and core exercises you should find a lot of stuff.

Hi Manatees!

Suzie - thank you for sharing!  you can be sure we will be thinking of you even more during that time!

Erin - glad you had a great date, and it sounds like you have a lot of fun races lined up!

Ronen - Thanks for sharing the music!!  Erin is right, some of the best swimming dry land workouts are core related - here's a link you can check out http://www.exercise-ball-exercises.com/best-swimming-workout.html - also, good luck with the Alcatraz!

Steve - awesome race line up!  and yes, it will be so much fun!

so, I also happen to know that Melissa recently celebrated a birthday and Amy is getting a bike fit (she promises to tell us all about it!)

what's going on with the other Manatees?
