I'll let you guys come up with the team names.  I just used the letters as placeholders.  Let's go!!!

Since it's for June and July, should we have some kind of theme to our team names?  Like all summer-related things, or Independence Day, or something?

That's a great idea, Debbie.  I'll just leave it all up to you guys.

Subject: RE: Transition Videos
BT just released a new video on transitions that I thought I'd share with you all.
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1757

They made one last year that was very helpful to me for my first tri, so I thought I'd include that one as well.  I think it goes into more detail than this newer one, but I thought I'd offer you both.
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1488

As I bring-up transitions, I also wanted to mention that it's important to practice them a couple times - at least - before your first tri.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Edited to add:  In fact, as I just rewatched this second-listed video, if I could, I'd actually make this required viewing, it's that informative.  You will learn so much, you'll be glad you watched it.  I really do hope you check it out.

I had my first OWS this past Sunday. I am still traumatized by the incident, it was a huge day of firsts! My first time in a wetsuit, first OWS, first real ride on my bike with clip ins....ugh. It was a VERY HUMBLING experience. For some reason I couldn't breathe properly in the water....I was swimming all over the place (something I NEVER do)...I felt like I was going to suffocate in the suit for a bit....

I cannot imagine doing this for a race!

Congrats on finishing it.... I cannot stand the wetsuit either. I am not planning on doing any of my tris in one... I have clostriphobia and the wetsuit just doubles it. I could care less if they are "faster".

freeflykami - 2009-06-03 3:02 PM I went on a solo bike ride somewhere besides my neighborhood! Woohoo! and it wasn't bad at all.  I actually kind of liked it ;0)

Now I just need to get to work on the challange...
Kami

I'm not trying to deminish your fears, but I've never really had a problem biking around.  This weekend I was a little hesitant to go on a busy road, but it was fine.  Does it make you more comfortable if you have your cell phone?  Maybe I'm just used to doing everything on my own that I don't even have another choice?!!??

But glad you could!  Something I always found interesting when I ride around is that things always seem closer than they are when I drive...like - thats all the time it took to get here???

I live in the country, and there isn't good cell coverage and a lot of the roads don't even have a white line. Plus there are a significant # of "good ol' boys" to put it nicely, that don't believe in share the road. They must have been at work today :0)

Hey, Megan.  Well, the good news is that those firsts are on their way to becoming seconds and thirds and eventually second-hand.  Having your breath messed-up is common.  I can't explain it but even for experienced swimmers, transitioning to the open water can be shocking.  I had no swim experience starting-out in this sport, and when I got in the water in my first tri, I freaked!  I'd gone swimming at my lake's beach a couple days before and thought it'd be no problem.  Boy, was I wrong and I should've gotten even more acquainted in the open water.

Just take some time here to get over the shock (and kiss the ground), and try it again.  It won't be as bad next time.  Be sure to practice clipping in and out on grass many, many times.  That'll help, too.

Though you sound terrified, you got out there and began the conquer.  Kudos to you!

mekira - 2009-06-03 5:59 AM Hi everyone If you look at my training log, you'll notice a lot of 'home improvement' workouts LOL We are now at the painting stage and the ceramic tile stage. I move next Tuesday but the new house will not be ready unfortunatly. I'll be living in a construction zone for a week or two.... I'm still planning on doing the June tri even though my training volume is very low. I figure that all the training I did throughout the winter will get me through it. This week I'm concentrating on running (I can't get to the pool at night nor can I take the time for a long bike ride). Tonight, home stuff Thursday : run Friday : more home stuff Saturday : swimming and brick training (I insisted that I keep this training) Sunday : not sure yet Next week should be a bit better. I'm a bit nervous about the tri but like I said, I should be ok. I can swim 750m, I can bike 20k and I can run 5k, now I have to do them all one after the other.... yikes!!! Patricia

When we moved last year, I had a TON of home improvement hours on my Training Log, too!  I stopped logging it all because that big, tall tower of red made my SBR workouts look like lines instead of blocks on that chart!  Ha ha.

Yeah, get in a couple bricks between now and then and you'll be fine.  Your race is on June 20th, right?

Yep June 20th

We sure know how to pile it all on at once, don't we? Undecided

My training has been slipping lately too, so I'm hoping you do just fine so I'll know I can get through my tri the week after yours.  Like you said, we can do all the pieces, and I'm sure with the help of some race-day adreniline we'll be able to put them together.

Have fun with the rest of the painting and tiling!  It will be beautiful when it's done.

I always take too much on at once LOL

Yes it will be beautiful AND I can say that I did it all myself. Tonight I put together IKEA kitchen cabinets... that was a workout on it's own... I'm sure I'm going to feel it tomorrow... ouch

I haven't posted anything in 2 weeks and tonight I can't shut up hehe

I was reading about your fear of riding alone. I had that when I first got my new road bike. For me it was a fear of the bike. I was used to heavy mountain bike and when I got this really light, fast bike I was so fearful that I'd get pushed in the road by the wind, that I wouldn't be able to control the bike and that I'd get run over by a car. Well I went out and I actually loved riding. I love going fast and going down hills LOL I'm still scared of stupid drivers so I'm always on the lookout and I always ride defensively. I bring my cell with me and make sure to tell someone where I'm going and how long I expect my ride to be.

I'm going to think about a name for our team... go team go

I did it! I did my first swim/bike brick for the actual race distances. I was very happy with my performance overall but really need to work on my swim endurance a bit more in the next few weeks. I wasn't able to do an actual transition because it has been SO cold here the past few days. I didn't want to ride wet so changed from swimsuit to biking clothes in the locker room. I did have my bike set up at a rack outside with shoes on towel, socks rolled up. I don't think I took more than 5 min on the transition even with changing clothes.

I have a question though...I want to use my Garmin on the race. I wouldn't necessarily have to use the HR part but it would be helpful I think?? I am guessing I would just have to leave it by my bike and strap it on quickly during transition??

Lora - how do we post our challenge information?

Team A - I am not a good "naming" person so one of you can choose. Last year we had a pony colt born on the 4th of July and I came up with Firecracker, Sparkler, Stink Bomb, Punk and probably some others....but the kids didn't like any of those!!! lol

AweSOME!

If you've got the 305, they're not waterproof, so definitely for bike and runs only.  If you don't care about your HR data, you can just leave it strapped to your bike.  If you do want that data, then T1 will be the best spot to do that.

Every Sunday evening, everyone should post how they met their goals that week.

I didn't see my name on any of the teams.  I replied that I wanted to participate, I think on page 31, so you must have just looked over it Lora.  Can you put me on one of the teams, or will it throw something off by making them uneven?  I feel like the last one picked for the team in gym class....LOL!  just kidding, i'm sure it was an oversight!!

Hey, Lisa.  As you've been training, are there any areas with which you're struggling?  Like, is your plan calling for 3 runs a week, but you've only been getting in 2?  If so, you could make meeting that goal your goal.

Well...unfortunately for me I haven't been following a training plan!  ::gasp:: silly me, I know!  I've basically been running 3 times a week and biking and swimming once/week.  After my 2nd 5K (a week from Saturday - 6/13) I was going to change training to 2 x a week for all 3.  I've done the distances on bike & swim and am just trying to build up my endurance overall.  And now I'm adding push-ups and am trying to add other core stuff.  I should work on getting something put together...

Also to edit your list of races...I'm not sure if you count 5K's (its more of a fun fun than a race...) but I have that on 6/13, my first tri on 7/12 and then my 2nd tri (both are sprints) on 8/9.

My 1st tri will be the Nevis Northwoods Triathlon on 8/03.  AND if I finish it, I'll automatically get a 1st place age group medal.  It's a very popular tri and reached it's 350 registration limit on January 19.  I checked out the registration list and there's nobody else in my age group.  Easy way to medal, huh?  Now I just have to make sure I finish.
