ranchrunner - 2009-05-02 12:27 PM Hi Everyone,

I got my Bike!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY! That is awesome. I have really loved following your bike saga and I'm a little sad its over, lol. But I bet there is nothing like the feel of a perfect fitting bike. Def. post a picture!

As for the wetsuit...I second wesuitrentals.com. It is $40 for a week, and if you like it....you can buy it afterwards. I believe they'll let you rent a wetsuit twice and apply all $80 if you decide to buy it. So you could rent it 1-2x for a couple of tris before you decide whether it is a must have.

It makes me a little sad that triathlons are soooooo expensive!

But have a great weekend and enjoy the new ride!

Lauren

Sharie - CONGRATS !! on the bike !! ... so glad everything worked out well. ;-)

And as for the pool swim - I did my first triathlon with VERY little swim training (I'd only been swimming for 6 months, and sporadic at best), I pulled out 500m in just over 11 minutes. I'm slow. My suggestion would be to just bite the bullet and do the OWS, I know it's scary at first but you'll probably be glad you did afterwards.

Subject: TR's threesome
I too did a threesome today! I'd like to think it was like a triathlon, but MY kind of triathlon. ;-)

I went for a run, then a yoga class, then swam. If we could replace biking with yoga, it would be my kind of IDEAL triathlon but in reverse order. lol.

The run was good, the yoga was awesome, but the swim sunk. I couldn't get my breathing straight, for some reason ... usually I'm a good swimmer. Hmmm ... weird.

Now I'm out to mow the lawn(s) (I have 3) then I'm going to knock on my little old neighbour Herb's door to see if he has any beer. He makes the BEST homemade beer and sells it to us on the street for $1 a bottle. I have a toonie set aside for the occassion (we don't have $1 or $2 bills in Canada, have coins ... the $2 are called toonies, we are nothing if not a logical people ... the $1 are called loonies cuz they have a loon on them).

Today was my father's last day of work, he officially retired after FORTY-THREE (that's 43!) years of working for the SAME company! ... he's totally old-school. So he's off to the pub tonight with my mom and some friends for a celebratory dinner/drinks, and I'll toast him from afar with my two beers.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE!

For those racing/running/riding - in the words of the great Ian Tyson - "saddle up kids let's get 'er done".

Thoughts on bike mojo ...

Biking used to be my weakest discipline. My first tri was a 3-lap bike course and EVERYONE lapped me ... I was still going out for the third loop and every other participant had already finished the bike course.

I used to get so frustrated going out for bike rides--so much GEAR and stuff to think about, clothes, shoes, water bottles, helmet, glasses, pumping the tyres etc. Plus, then there was traffic, signaling, shifting gears--aaaaargh!

What really helped me was just going out for fun rides ... in flipflops, even ... just up and down a quiet street of my neighborhood, practicing shifting gears and drinking from the water bottles. No pressure.

Slowly, over time, as I went out on the bike more and practiced, all this bike stuff is second nature to me, and I love nothing more than flying out by the beach, wind in my face, hypnotic hum of the wheels and rhythm of the pedals are like my very heartbeat.

ranchrunner - 2009-05-01 11:27 AM Hi Everyone,

(I always second guess myself and read today that these might not be a good choice for Tri's???  Any comments???).

My concerns...it was much faster than I expected!   Also, it was 250yd rather than 250meters, but I swam it in exactly 4min.     I was thinking more like 15-20min for the 500???  Your thoughts?

One other question - somewhere I read about it costing to register for races on Active.com...is there another way?

Congratulations, Sharie! I'm so happy for you. The Specialized MTB are going to be just fine for tri. Don't listen to anyone who tells you you need this or that or fancy this ... it just isn't true!

When unsure about times, definitely seed yourself slower. For the pool, I'd add a minute to your 250 yd time, then double it. Tri pool swims are always more tricky--people around, having to pass, lane lines, etc.

Most races have you register through active.com--usually it's just a $2 processing fee extra.

Happy Sunday all!

After my "first" full week of being serious about weightloss and training - I lost 4 pounds this past week! It could/should have been a bit more, but I missed a workout on Wednesday and I ate pizza and drank beer on Friday. ;-)

Good start, though. I'm looking forward to week 2.

My thoughts are with everyone racing today - can't wait to read the RR's!

Well, I have gotten in 2 wonderful rides on my new bike.   WOW!  It has been fun beyond what I expected.   I am no racer, but the riding is great!   I did 8 miles both days...in a drizzle.    I need much more work and information about how to shift well.

Lynn  - you asked about my swim background.   I was a competitive swimmer from age 6 thru high school.   Haven't spent much or any time in the water in the past 25 years, but it has come back fast.   The stroke techniques from Wendy have helped a lot.

Thanks to all for the suggestion of the wet suit rental.   I am going to register for the pool, but go to the first open water practice swim and if that goes well, I will change.     The good thing about open water is that I could practice at the local reservoir - only a few miles away instead of so far to the pools.

Stacie - nice bike!   And a great deal too!!

Carole - hope you have a good training week!   I know for me, it finally came together this week.   I realized that I could really do this!!

That's for Stacie for her marathon and TR for her weight loss and not depriving. No Diets! Just mindfulness. I've done a few yoga classes in my day, TR.

Oh, Sharie -- if you're a swimmer from way back that explains your faster than expected time. I've observed that people who swam competitively as kids have a huge advantage over us adults trying to do the fish in water thing. So, good for you. You're gonna have this tri thing so dialed in.

Here's to another wonderful training week everyone!

I love this. I've re-read it several times over the past few days ... frustration is exactly what I feel with the bike. It's so easy to just put shoes on and go for a run ... it's easy (for me, despite the gear required) to go to the pool and just swim ... but biking seems so HARD. And I am scared, too - what if I get far away from home and have a flat - I carry extra tubes and CO cartridges, I know how to change a tire - but it's HARD! ... what if I don't change gears fast enough on a hill? What if I get hit by a car? There's just so many variables that aren't there on the run and in the pool.

I'm thinking of going out with just my runners - not clipping in with my proper shoes - to take some of that fear out my first few rides. I'm just finding the LeMond trainers at the gym so much more friendly - they have cadence and my bike doesn't, and for my scheduled long rides it's so much easier for me to go to the gym at a quiet time than it is for me to ride up and down the same 2K of bike trail for 90 minutes. ;-)

See - excuses. I need to move past this.

Wahoo I got on the bike today, too! I decided to follow Yanti's advice, and just get on and move, no pressure, no hype. I did get all gussied up, but all in all it was a good ride, and I managed to get an hour in. I only told myself I had to do at least 20 minute, 30 minutes if I wanted to feel good about myself. 40 minutes in, I looked down at my bike computer and it said I had been on the bike for.... drumroll please..... 40 minutes! It was a piece of cake to mentally keep myself going for the remainder of an hour. Voila!

Hope everybody's Monday is going well so far. Congrats to all those who raced this weekend. I am hoping to do inspires later on tonight, so I'll be a bit more personal then, but know that I think you rock!

Hi Mantatees!

Congrats on your run and new bike, Stacie! And good going to TR on your weight loss! Keep up the good work. Sharie, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your new bike.

I've had company since Thursday, so I've been busy entertaining. Basically it's meant a week off of training. My sister-in-law and her little boy went back to my other sister-in-law's house today, so tomorrow, it's back to the grind! I'm ready, too.

I've decided to take a little different philosophy about my training. Sometimes I get so stressed about completing a planned workout that it's not even fun anymore. So I've decided that if I can get an hour of either swim, bike, or run 5-6 days a week, I'll be happy. I'm not going to worry about competing in any races right now. I just really don't want to. I still want to work on higher intensity workouts for a lot of reasons. My goal right now is to stay in shape and have fun.

Have a nice evening everybody!

It is pretty cool to see everyone's progress over the last month.  There has been some excellent training, some new bikes, some races, some weight loss, some injuries and sickness.  It has been nice to share it with you all.

I am back from being sick and I was able to do my big hike as planned, so I am very happy for that.  8000 vertical feet in 10 miles is really gruelling, but I feel such a sense of accomplishment.

I hope everyone has a great week.
