Now that you and Leah setting yourselves up for IMAZ I think you should look into HR/cadence and formulating a good nutrition program. I think those especially nutrition are way more important in a IM than in any other distances. The HR/ cadence monitoring will help you figure what you are doing so you can train and race consistently so you don't blow it out to early and possibly bonk. 112 miles is a long, long way and the marathon after you need to have control (big mental element to IM). I'm considering a IM distance aquabike for late next year or 2011, if it wasn't for my knee I might consider an IM in 2011. Good luck again to our future IMers!

Kate there are several threads on Gear review forum on saddles and many on Adamo ISMs. Before I got my saddle also did research on the team estrogen forums to get a more female perspective on saddles.

~ AZ Sunshine ~ - 2009-11-22 11:29 PM

losta - 2009-11-22 8:01 PM Congrats Kate! What did you eat/drink on the ride? Did you plan your nutrition? What saddle are you on now? What type of shorts? Did you monitor your cadence and HR? What do you think of Tucson? I recently got an Adamo saddle and like it alot but haven't gone on any really long rides with it yet. I like zoot trifit shorts with light padding but if I was planning to go over 50 miles I'd go with a cycle short with a bit more padding like pearl izumi or desoto.

Eat - The race didn't start until 10:30 so I had a big breakfast before the ride.  During the race I had a banana and a clif bar and a gu.

Nutrition - the only thing I really planned was to put some gu and the clif bar in my shirt.  I also had a gatorade and a water in my bottles.  Not the smartest.

Saddle - I have a basic small hard black saddle.  I'm looking for something with a hole in the middle.  I don't mind the hard part and don't need a cushy big soft one.  Excuse me if I get descriptive but  . . . I feel like I've been rubbed raw after riding.  Only right in the middle too.  I thought it would be good to give it a try.  Maybe I'll tough it out for a while and see if I get a little tougher.

Shorts - I have a pair of $40.00 bike shorts from Performance Bikes.  I think they are just the store brand.  My BIL thinks I should upgrade to gel shorts.  Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas list.

Cadence or Heart Rate - No monitoring to both.  I don't really understand cadence and I haven't tried a HR monitor yet.

Tucson - Mmmm . . . let's just say I'm a Phoenix girl.  Tucson doesn't do it for me but I know a lot of people who like it.  We did drive by a cute neighborhood in Oro Valley.

Kate - let me know what you find out about saddles.  If it makes that big a difference, I might get a new seat.  There are going to be one heck of a lot of miles logged between now and November 21, 2010, and we might as well make it as easy on ourselves as possible.

Twenty-five minutes???  As in, less than half an hour?  Wow!  Glad I didn't dawdle.  It turns out that one of my Crossfit trainers was in Arizona watching the race and he signed up in person this morning.  Maybe you saw him - he probably would have been wearing an orange Crossfit Monrovia t-shirt.

Subject: RE: Have I lost my mind to consider a HIM?

Hey Gang!  What a day!  I'm finally just settling down for the night.  My mind is racing thinking about how I'm going to do this.  My goal is to give full attention to the HIM in March.  We are on week 18 and after this weekend I have a long way to go.  (I do feel a little better after Leah's post saying that my base must be around 40-44.  True.  I know what I have to do.  I have learned a few things lately though.

1.  I need to get a YMCA or gym membership so I can workout at night.  I'm usually anti fitness center b/c I like to be outside but it is too dark in the morning and evening to do anything.  A new YMCA opened up about 2 miles from my house so I think I will go there.

2.  I think Lisa is right that I need to get my act/Sh$T together!  (She said it much more nicely than that but I know she is right.)  Since time is a factor for me I will have to be as efficient as possible in my training.  Understanding cadence and HR will make things so much better.

3.  Nutrition - I'm eating everything in sight.  I always seem to think that a big workout or race gives me the green light to eat ALL WEEKEND long.  I'm going to log my food starting now.  I know 20 pounds will greatly help me before the HIM.

4.  After 2 weeks on my plan it is obvious that my "planned to actual" workout times are not good.  I need to come up with a better system.

5.  I can't do all these races in 2010.  Heck, I've been doing a race almost every weekend.  I am realizing that the races take away from my long training days.  I want to be more selective in 2010.  I want to have fun but balance it with good solid races that help my training.

I'm ready to let the training and the research begin.  Thanks to all for your support.  I glad you are all on my NUTSO team.  Just think how awesome we are all going to do in 2010!

*  Leah - Didn't see your Crossfit guy.  It was a zoo down there.  It was interesting to see how fit everyone was in line.  My BIL and I were a little freaked out by the triGods.  Turns out many of the people in line with us around 9:00 had just figured out that they didn't get a Kona slot.  One guy was 3 spots back from Kona and another gal missed it by a few minutes.  I heard there were great times in this year's event.  Once things settle down we should think about what our key races will be so I can get you to AZ next year.  (You could also come over on a non race weekend and we could ride the bike course.   Most of the big races are held in Tempe Town lake . . . yes, the lake I have been cursing most of this season.

*  Keely - I agree that you are a star!  Just imagine if you would have been healthy and had a lot of training time!  Way to kick but on the run.  I think you are going to have a great training year!  Get your logs up so we can root you on!

*  Lisa - Thanks for all of your tips on gear and training.  I know I need to spend some time researching and getting up to speed.  I will check out the Team estrogen site.  A saddle is high on my list of things I need right now.  Also, I don't want to discourage you on Tucson.  My hubby and I would take Tucson and the Southwest over most parts of the country any time.  Everything is slow paced and relaxed out here.  Within the southwest you will find differences in the cities.  I'm more of a big city gal so like Phoenix better but I like that Tucson is more of a liberal college town.  You just need to prepare yourself for the browness of the desert.  It took me a lot of time to get used to it.  When you come out in March I'll show you around up here and you can check it out down there.  I'm looking forward to your visit.

*  Kiri - Great running!!  That has to feel great to see the distance getting longer and the times getting quicker.   Thanks for letting me know about the bike shorts.  My tribuddy BIL said that I HAVE to get some gel shorts.  I wasn't sold b/c I didn't like the feel of them.  My rear has enough "dimples" in it without the gel shorts giving me more!  There is a Pearl Izumi (sp) outlet store in our area that is just opening up.  I heard they are going to have a sale Thanksgiving night.  My family might take an after dinner drive up that way to see what they have.  Maybe I can find a bargain.

*  Scott - You are being a trooper listening to all our "girly part" bike seat issues.  You have earned a gold star for the week.  Sounds like you have a good time with your 2 year old.  Congrats on starting your training program.  It is fun to see the charts.  You can also looked at what your planned called for and what you actually did.  Very telling.

*  Debb - Hope you are enjoying your trip!

Yes, it is definitely time to get very serious about training.  There are distances we could "wing," but HIM and IM are not among them.  I am quite sure I could do a half marathon tomorrow or even an oly.  Those distances I could wing - it might not be pretty, but I could do them.  But not the HIM.  Heck, I did this HIM before and I DID train, but just not well enough and it darn near killed me.  I think that is what is meant by respecting the distance.

And I know I need to be better about following my bike workouts.  I think it will be easier now that my coach is back in town and I can explain to him how I am really not ready for a three-hour long climb bike ride and he can explain to me how I need to do it anyway.

Kate, I think those races that you have done in the last weeks have been really useful, but you probably don't need to race every weekend.  But if you think about it, you learned something really valuable at each one of those events.  You learned to get over your panic, you learned that you could do the distance in the water, you learned that you had a solid 40 mile bike base.  Those were great for calibration.

I seriously intend to come to AZ once or twice next year to ride and run the course.  My current fantasy is to come mid-April and on Saturday do one loop of the bike course and some sort of run and then on Sunday do two loops of the bike course and another run.  I haven't worked out the distances for the runs that make sense.  I would like to do the same thing later, like maybe September or October only do the full bike course and a good chunk of the run.  BryanCD, who just did IMAZ and did spectacularly, did the full bike course a few weeks or month ago (don't remember exactly how long ago) and his pace on that training ride was exactly what it was on Sunday.  Talk about calibration.  That's calibration for you.

Debb's IM is two months before IMAZ and so she should be two months ahead of us in training.  Her logs and experience will be really useful.  I suspect her bike course is hillier than ours.  But we still have to train for the hills for Cali 70.3.

This is all a great adventure.  I assured Chuck that I only want to do two IMs - IMAZ November 2010 and a European IM in the summer of 2011 and then no more.  I can then retire to my rocking chair.  Ha ha ha.  Never.

I got my swim in this morning.  I am taking the day off today and intend to get in a trail run and a bike ride, which will help my numbers for the Stuffed Turkeys.

What is everyone else doing today??

I did a spinerval workout. I got my heart rate way up there on some of the intervals. I really watch HR/cadence and starting to monitor power on the bike.

Leah -Any chance you'd be in AZ in early March? I am going to the Trifest in Tucson March 5-7 and will also spend some time in Scottsdale. I will have my bike and plan to ride with Kate. Wanna join us? Anyone else?

I am running with my group tonight. Funny how the majority of them mentioned that after the 10K they weren't running through the winter. Today it's cold and rainy out and I emailed them and 3 of them said they'll be running tonight! One girl even said she'll be running with me outside this winter to better her time at the 10K in April! I was pretty impressed with them!

Tomorrow I'm going to see about a spin class or maybe just do some cross training at the gym. Thursday I'll be travelling to Maine for the weekend to hang with my mother. We'll be in the pool doing laps and then I'll have her doing some interval running with me and her 2 labs.

I'd LOVE to come to Arizona!! LOL...Mum wants to go to Florida around March to visit my Aunt & Uncle down there but maybe I can convince her Tucson instead for the Trifest! That would be great fun!

I promise I'll start working on logging my training on here. I'm still learning my way around this site because all I've really been doing is stalking the forums and reading some articles and checking on local races. The logging is still a little confusing to me!

Oh yeah, the couple times I have done a Spinervals workout I really got my heart rate up there.

I will see about early March.  Kate is close enough to me to make it possible and far enough away to make it challenging.  But I would love to join you two.

I hope you make it to Arizona.  That would probably push it over the edge for me, if there were three or four or five Nutsos meeting up in Arizona, as long as I didn't have anything family going on (too early to know on that).

Just so you know, I'm a really nice person, so you'll just have to forgive what comes next.  I was so sorry to read about your cold and rainy weather.  Today I did a trail run in just a sports bra and shorts.  And my time was a little slower than last time because I was too hot.  Poor me.

The great thing about triathlons is the cross-training and the fact that a whole lots of things "count" as training.  For biking, riding the trainer, going on the streets outside, taking a spin class, etc., etc., etc.  For running, we can go on the treadmill, go trail running, go on the streets, heck, sometimes I count walking as part of my running schedule.

WOW Leah, really, I'm truly sorry and empathize with your sunny, warm weather there in California. As for running in just a sports bra and shorts, not really jealous as you couldn't pay me enough to do that! LOL. I actually like the cold weather. I grew up in Maine so "cold" here is really shorts weather back home. I think running outside in colder temperatures will be conditioning for me and I'll actually enjoy it even though I'll have some issues breathing and nose running, etc but I think I'll suvive! I've learned to appreciate and enjoy the cold weather now if you prepare properly for it. Travelling to Maine this weekend I'll be putting on the layers and if the wind is blowing I've got a lovely balaclava from Under Armour that works well even though I look like a bloated ninja in my winter gear!

Growing up in Wisconsin and then moving to Colorado it is not uncommon for me to be wearing shorts when it is 30 degrees outside to run in.  However, I was pulled over by the local police last time I went with just a sports bra so I have been wearing at least a t-shirt now.  And Leah..I assume you meant you were "too hot" temperature wise.  There is only room for one egotistical person on this thread and that is me..lol.

I can tell it is a short work week for everyone..

I definitely got a chuckle out of that.  Yes, I was too hot temperature-wise, not otherwise.  While I do admit that I look lots better since I lost the weight, I still have plenty of 54 year old middle jiggle that I keep hoping will go away.  I do like to run outside when it is cold, but I bet it is more of a production for me to get ready to run when the temperature is in the 30's than you toughies.

Yep, short week.  I worked yesterday, but am taking the day off today to finish some sewing for my grandchildren.  I make most of their jammies, which is the only thing I sew well enough that my DIL will actually put the kids in.  Tomorrow will be a travel day to Northern California and then home again on Sunday.  After my bike ride this afternoon (love these days off), I will be doing only running until next week, except, perhaps, the stationary bike at the gym.

I think it's an hour or more from where Kate is to Tucson. We flying into Phoenix then going to Tucson for 4 nights then coming back to Scottsdale for 3 nights before flying back east. I think it's kind of like a trade show with tri related activities going on around it.

First "run" in almost a year. On a treadmill at the rec center.  I learned a number of things:

  1. I am have a long way to go on the run.  at 12:00 miles my heart rate was at 165 or better.
  2. I was the largest guy in the gym by 30lbs and proud of it..(I hate guys with runner's bodys - All the guys at the gym were 150 - 175 lbs it seemed)
  3. The knee felt pretty darn good but losing weight is going to help.
  4. Although very out of shape it felt darn good to be moving again.
  5. I need to buy new running shoes. OK I don't need to but my firm is giving me $150.00 to buy a pair and I love shopping..
  6. That by being a big bald guy wearing an army green t-shirt with the word Infidel on the front and forgetting that everyone around me can hear me as I call out cadence with my Ipod.." I wanna be an airborne ranger" allows me to clear out at least three machines from me in every direction.  I can't believe I am really that scary...then again I live only 25 minutes from Boulder and the hippie lifestyle..lol
  7. No matter how out of shape I am I feel the need to admire myself in the many mirrors at the gym.  (Yes ladies..I believe it is genetic that while the fairer sex seems to be able to find every flaw with their body the more masculine of us can pretty much ignore everything..find one bright spot and say to themselves..yep..I'm darn good looking.)

Tucson and Phoenix about 1.5 hours.  Not a bad trip at all.  Lisa will be here a couple of weeks for our HIM.  I hope we can connect.

Scott - You are crazy.  I can just see you posing around in front of the mirror!  Sounds like you had a great work out!  Keep up the good work.  I think I cuold be much faster if I was down 20 pounds too.

I swam tonight, worked on thanksgiving stuff, and read ironman race reports.  I hope to get another swim in tomorrow.

Catch you all later!

Scott, you are definitely crazy!

I'm at work today but not really doing anything..there are only 2 people at work today from my division and it's pretty sparse in general in the office. I ran last night at a decent pace with a couple of girls so I'm going to try to keep up with them to start busting out a faster pace. I'll see what I can do on my own this weekend!

I've got to pack when I get out of here and try to clean up around my yard a little bit, received a "violation" from my HOA this week about the trees on my property and the need to "clean my flower bed"...LOL. I'm just lazy! But I did put a call in to a guy to get an estimate for my trees and hopefully I'll have that taken care of next week!

Flying into Portland, Maine tomorrow then driving 2 hours north to Bangor for my Thanksgiving weekend. No snow but apparently I'm taking all the wet weather from Maryland up with me for the whole weekend!

If I don't get online again in the next couple of days I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Apparently I am the only one working today..The attorneys who were going to leave early have not shown up as of yet and one said he is not coming in.  (At least I have PT at 1:30 and am pretty sure that there is going to be some sort of issue to prevent me from coming back to the office).

I am somewhat sore today..no the knees so much as my hips and back.  and of course my two year old was sick last night and would not go to sleep (I am very lucky in that my daughter has slept through the night since the first night we brought her home)  SO I am tired and cranky and I brought vegetables for everyone one to eat..what the heck is that all about..where are the cookies and sweets and lasagna.

No, no, no.  No sweets.  No cookies.  No lasagna.  The veggies are really, really good and you can feel very virtuous for having brought them.  The few people who are working today are very impressed.  Don't let it go.

I got in my 5+ mile run and Crossfit and as soon as I pack up everything, I am heading off to see my grandbabies.  Neither of whom slept through the night from the beginning, but who are otherwise better than Scott's daughter.

Awesome Kiri!  It will feel so awesome crossing 50 pounds off your list!

I'm actually shocked that here are so many people at school today.  I thought people would be gone by now.  I'm going to grab a swim soon then head home.  On the way, I'm going to check out the new YMCA and see how it looks.  Then it is off to chopping and dicing for tomorrows meal.  I am in charge of the turkey.  It is brining now.  My hubby set up a 60 mile bike ride for the day after Thanksgiving.  It will be interesting!
