Extreme Veteran 475 Watertown, MA | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Good call on the double-back run, Sam, I like it. Lots of good training plans here, people are on track for great races! My volume looks like this: 3 swims a week, 2-3K per, 1 wetsuit OWS of 2500, 2 pool swims of 100m-200m intervals. 4 rides a week, 2 'recovery' variety, one long (60-80 mi) or long TT (40-60 mi), one either intervals or shorter (30-40 mi) TT 4 runs a week, 1 3-4 mile brick off the long ride, 1 short (3-4 mi) and easy, 1 interval/tempo, 1 'long' (after the injury I'm still building up, so my long run is currently just 9 miles; will have that up to 13-14 by taper. Not ideal but it is what it is, I'd rather show up slightly underprepared then show up injured. |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread My training: Swim - 2x/week - was doing 2k/session, but changed it up so 2500y one session and 1500-2000 in the other. Bike - 3 rides/week - building up the long ride each week - about 50mi right now. Will peak around 65-70. The other 2 rides are anywhere from 1-2 hours. Doing a short brick run after at least 1 ride/week. Run - I've gone from strongly considering racing this as "Aqua-velo", to thinking I could walk the 13 miles, to a run/walk, and now actually thinking it might not be that bad. 3 runs/week - 2x 1 hour, and a long run of 2 hrs. (well, walk/run) I'm also doing NYC Marathon this year, so the training actually should start now. If my running can come around, I'll be very happy! After doing Lake Placid last year, this year is almost a year off for me. not really doing any speed work or being tied to any particular plan. Looking to 'just finish'. |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread wstchstrTriathlete - 2010-07-08 2:26 PM I have Rhode Island 70.3 this weekend, then its a week or two-ish of lighter volume, then a good 2-3 week build up, week taper, then Timberman time! I am heading up to Lake Placid to volunteer @ the Ironman and will be reconning the course, so the plan is to fit in a broken HIM of distances over 3 days. I just want this heat to break! Jon - I'll be doing the Lk Placid training / volunteering thing too. Was thinking of Sat morning swim, followed by 1+ loop of the bike course. Volunteering Sunday (transition tent for me). Then Monday morning, running 1 loop of the course (after signing up for 2011????). Send me PM if you want to join in the fun. |

Extreme Veteran 494 Morris County, NJ | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I am happy to report that I completed the 1.5-mile swim at Lake Nockamixon yesterday without a wetsuit. Results aren't posted, and I am quite sure I was very slow, but just getting it done will go a long way to helping me feel calm at the Timberman start. I had a wonderful swim--it was warm and calm and attended by experienced and polite swimmers. I capped-off the afternoon with a solid 40-mile ride and I feel great today. My run volume is WAY too low and I am sure to pay a painful price for that on race day, but I no longer doubt I will finish the race. Glad to read you are all training well. |

That is awesome! I have been swimming only 1 day a week with a wetsuit just in case (of what I refuse to say, but you all know what I am talking about). 3 days without wetsuit (I train all open water because the pool is so freaking far away). My run #'s are low too due to injury...my bike #'s are up though so....who knows. I am doing what I can to stay healthy and prepare. Frustrating to have an injury that makes running just hurt. It has good and bad days. Hoping Aug 22 is a good day! Cheers, Mandy Edited by manfarr1974 2010-07-12 1:50 PM |

Veteran 139 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Good work Jackie - nice to get that feeling of confidence close to a race. For my part I did my first ~60 mile ride on Friday in the heat and humidity and it was a very tough experience. Given the conditions and the fact that it was hilly I'm not too down about it, but the prospect of running a half marathon after that kind of distance was pretty sobering. It's better to know that now rather than day of. I was toast the next day and did not go on my usual 30 mile group ride. One important lesson learned was (though I felt hydrated before the ride) over the course of the ride I drank 7 x 20 Oz bottles of water, carbo pro/water mix and gatorade and I did not need to pee until about 2 hours after the ride was done. I know I sweat profusely during excercise but that surprised even me. I also don't think I got enough carbs early in the ride as the last 15 miles I felt like I was in survival mode. Good to know for race day. I will be definitely be focussing on maintaining a decent a long ride and working on nutrition on those rides from now until taper. Sounds like folks had some good training this weekend, good to see it! Cheers, S |

Master 1927 Guilford, CT | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Nice work everyone! Keep it up! How many calories did you take in per hour on your long ride? Did RI and signed up for Lake Placid for 2011....time to go long! Hopefully another year of training and I'll be in a good spot for it. Looking forward to Timberman after doing RI last weekend. Timberman may very well end up being a faster course than RI this year. I've got the bug now! Just need to recover before a couple of big weeks prior to Timberman. Hillwork hillwork and some more hillwork is on the agenda. |

How many calories did you take in per hour on your long ride? --> I calculate about 250 but that's a guesstimate. Definitely not enough. Next ride I'm going to know the exact number of caloriesI have with me and consume over the 60 miles and see how it goes. Did RI and signed up for Lake Placid for 2011....time to go long! You are right, Timberman is a faster course than Rhode Island. Those rollers really started to add up on the bike course (not to mention the last 6 miles of through Providence, which is its own story to tell), also the run course @ RI was way hillier and lots more unshaded spots than Timberman. I am hoping to redeem myself from yesterday. |

Now I'm getting pumped for tomorrow morning's non-wetsuit open water swim and a little later a time trial on the bike. Keep it up! Oh, just a word of caution, if you get amnesia like I did and forget that you really don't know jack about bikes and decide to take your chain off to clean it, pay close attention to how it goes back on and be prepared to have very black hands and dark spaces under your fingernails. I'm just sayin'. |

I recommend purchasing a box of exam gloves like they use in the doctor's office to wear whenever doing any maintainence on the bike to avoid such problems. I know you own a chain scrubber ( http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=8&item=CM-5I) young man, so you shouldn't be taking your chain off to clean it anyway! You are all very inspirational. Extreme Veteran 475 Watertown, MA | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Sam, at least you're not replacing your FD, RD, chain and cables this weekend...as someone who's screwed up simple derailleur adjustments on numerous occasions--requiring an expensive visit to the LBS after the fact--I'm a little worried for my roadie. Thankfully I have a buddy who's a bit more mechanically savvy to help me out, otherwise I'd have the bike in a thousand peices by the end of the weekend. |

Go get some! Haha, let's hope so! In reality I'll be redlining for more than an hour at 180+ HR, so it'll probably hurt more than Timberman in a month. And my coach has me running for an hour after the race, too...Sunday is gonna hurt, but I love it! |

Regular 58 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Hey guys - I haven't posted in a long time, and I asked this question before but couldn't find if anyone answered it. I'm going to drive in the morning of from about 1hr away. How is it logistic wise getting to where the race is? Is it going to be a mess (i.e one road into the event). Just wondering what time I realistically have to leave to get there. I'm just considering driving in the night before and sleeping in my trunk (it's a hatchback before you get nervous). Done this on a few occasions. I'm excited as this is my first 70.3 and my second triathlon overall. Been putting in around 15 hours a week, 3 swims, 3-4 bikes and 3-4 runs. Varying mileage but my coach is preparing me well. Thanks! |
