Extreme Veteran 710 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread 101abp40 - 2011-11-07 5:48 PM Current water temp at Tempe Town Lake today is 65. We have another storm coming in from the west, so that will likely stabilize around 65. It does not appear as though air temps will go up that much in the next 2 weeks, so it looks like the swim will be right about where the water temps are now.
I believe in 2009 the water temp race day was 62 degrees. It's chilly but eventually you get used to it. I recommend double capping and ear plugs! |

Member 31 Arlington, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Yea I like running and not the other 2 as much. Also, my bike was in the shop for a week and then it was 30 deg for a few days, so any excuse I can get to not bike was there and I ended up running instead. In terms of the 2 week taper, I use it for marathons and notice I get bored and stale with a 3 week taper. Everyone is def different with training and taper. |

I have never used ear plugs but have heard from many sources now that it is the way to go with cold water. There seem to be a couple different kinds. Any recommendations? |

There seem to be a couple different kinds. Any recommendations? I always use plugs when the water is in the low 60s or colder. Without them I get major vertigo getting out of the water. One time I had to lie on my back for 10 minutes and close my eyes or I would have puked. I use the waxy type of ear plugs. The plastic ones tend to hurt my ears after a while. |

Extreme Veteran 610 San Francisco CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I use the Macks plastic ear plugs that have a cord that keep them together. I tuck the cord up into my swim cap. I think you can get them at a drugstore for a few dollars. I used them for all OWS but not in the pool. |

This is interesting, I still get nauseous after swimming. I always blamed it on the chlorine, maybe i'll try the ear plugs and see if there is a difference. I did swim once a week in the open water in the summer and was better than the pool but still nauseous. |

I use Mack's, and swim with them every session. I would recommend them over the silicon ones that Tyr and Speedo sell. |

Master 1946 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Really appreciate the local input on temps etc..thanks.. Does anyone know if family members are volunteering how difficult or easy to get around it is? We will have 1 car & staying it looks like 6 miles out from venue but don't have any idea if shuttles are around for volunteers or public transportation feasible? |

New user 12 NYC | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread ....done...tapering is on! Did my last long run on Sunday (ING NYC Marathon - finished in 2:56:57 !!! new PR for NYC). Now I'm totally cutting back. Just short runs and short bike rides. Maybe a swim. Yesterday I did my first try swimming in cold water (guess it was mid 50's) and the water was so cold that I got a headache during the swim - is this normal? Do I have to expect the same thing during IMAZ? Hope to see you all there...10 days to go... |

Extreme Veteran 499 Racine WI | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Just an FYI, I did a search on Walgreen.com for Macks Earplugs and a majority of their stores seem to carry them and have them in stock. I'm use to OWS in Lake Michigan and never had an issue but figure it can't hurt to have a box of them and try them during the practice swim if needed. |

I purchased a neoprene cap and have always worn earplugs. Tried out the cap this morning and it worked great. I also am getting booties. I have no idea if I will use them but I would rather be safe then sorry as I get cold really easily and I saw what condition some of the racers were in last year coming out of the water. |

I wanted to run a marathon a month before the IM but felt that it would take too much away in terms of biking and then trying to recover. |

I wanted to run a marathon a month before the IM but felt that it would take too much away in terms of biking and then trying to recover. I wanted to run sub 3:15:00 but once on KM 10 I saw that im doing pretty well - so I thought I will just keep the pace and never push too hard. I also did my first test with some more Power Bar gel during the run (normally I only take one during the entire race - this time I took 4 in and it felt great). At the IMAZ im targeting for something between 3:30 and 3:45. Today my legs feel good - a little sore but I could already run the subway stairs up and down on Monday without too much pain... |

I did IMSG by myself and it sort of sucked... Just hanging out in lines and eating by myself at the athlete dinners, etc. Hoping to avoid that this time. |

Many have posted their numbers in this thread, but as far as I know there isn't a full list anywhere...I'd volunteer to do it myself, but I'm busy getting everything in order so I can drive down there on Tuesday. |
