Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() nakdboardr - 2011-01-18 6:21 AM So I woke up to some ugly weather in the Philly area. Today is a planned off day but I may jump on the trainer tonight for a quick spin. I had a really good run last night--felt good and I pushed out a good 40 minute effort! Where in the philly area are you? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jgerbodegrant - 2011-01-18 7:04 AM Newbz, sounds like an awesome run. For my speedwork, I basically do about a 10 minute warmup and then intervals at about 6:00 pace, but that's only been for 30s at a time so far. I can't imagine running 5 miles at that pace. These guys that run boston in just over 5 min miles is amazing. PS....who is that in your avatar? Looks nothing like you.... How do those 30sec bits feel? You might also want to try lengthening them out a bit (say somewhere in the 1:30-2min range) but slowly down to 5k type effort. The photo is Bananatoes on BT, a whole bunch of us from ohio changed our photo to his to mess with him. Go check out his profile (he is a funny guy to start with), all of his friends now have one photo or another of him up |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() By the way for those that live in northern climates how do you handle running in the snow? It seems that I can't get a good foothold and if a sidewalk is not properly shoveled I am slipping alot when I plant my foot and wasting tons of energy. Don't get me started on crossing streets and running through all the piled up snow. |

The 30s segments feel fine. My right quad was a little sore for the rest of the day, but seems fine now. I slow way down to get my heart rate back to normal after though. I might mention that to the coach. She is reducing my rest time in between sets. Last week I had a 4 minute rest, this week was 3 minute rest. Is this just a different method, or have you never heard of it being done this way? |

Don't get me started on crossing streets and running through all the piled up snow. I wear my trail shoes. Don't really have a problem. A bit like running in the sand. I think as long as you are careful you can get a good workout from it. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I usually just run on the treadmill in Jan and Feb here in Albany. You get a very similar workout that, I think, you can even control much better in terms of pace vs being outside in the snow. I do try to get outside once every 2 weeks or so just so I test where I am at actually running outside. |

Is this just a different method, or have you never heard of it being done this way? Yep, my guess right now for rowing are doing something similar. One of their interval days a week started at 2k-4k paced work (mostly 1k repeats), and rest started at around 5 minutes and will slowly be coming down until we hit 2min. once that happens the workouts restart but with longer reps, 2k ish with equal rest, and then the rest will again slowly come down. |

![]() David...glad that actually isn't your picture. I was getting a little worried. Got in a nice run at lunch and will try to get in a swim after work. I'm realizing that I don't put in nearly enough swim volume as I should be. My masters class at the Y is heavily focused on instruction and drills...and while that's good...I still need volume on my own. When I was making the most progress last year, I was swimming about 4000-7000 on my own per week. The past 8 months or so I've been only swimming masters 1-2x a week...which is not nearly enough as my form is better, but my endurance sucks. Edited by tri808 2011-01-18 5:52 PM |

![]() ![]() |
![]() yeah...form has definatley helped me get slightly faster despite less volume. The 4000-7000 per week I was swimming on my own last spring was not including my masters classes. So I was actually swimming more like 6500-10k per week. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I plan on doing some HR testing on the trainer to set up my new HR zones and was wondering about some good ways of doing this. Last year I did a 10 minute warmup and then 20 minutes all out to find my HR zones. Just wondering if I should have a certain cadence or is it more or less just to get my HR up as high as I can get it for 20 minutes? |

Got in a 5.5mi run before work and 7.4 after with a local run club. Very icy this morning but not too bad tonight! |

![]() Made it to the pool for some 50's and 100's on 1 and 2 minutes. Didn't last as long as I'd hope to...but it's a start back in the right direction. Masters class again tomorrow night, and I'll do more intervals on Friday. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got right-about a mile of running in at work, broken into one 450yd run and a bunch of 250 yd runs. I had about 30 extra pounds on. Not much, but it felt good. Unfortunately, when I got home from work I tried to go for a short run (intended 3 miles) my knee hurt. Appointment w/ the orthpaedist tomorrow. I got some time on the trainer when I got my bike fitted a couple of days ago; does that count? The difference is definitely noticeable; my bike feels much more comfortable. I'm kinda irritated about my weight. Realistically, I don't need to worry, but I was at 155 before my knee started bothering me, and this morning I weighed-in at 159/160 (couldn't tell exactly, not a digital scale). I thought I was being more careful with what I've been eating. Apparently not as careful as I thought. I know it'll drop when I can run and bike again, and 160 isn't unhealthy, but it's irritating as all heck. |

![]() So something's wrong with me today. Last night, I woke up at around midnight with an awful bloated feeling. Like my stomach was going to explode. It was affecting my breathing, and pretty much hurting my back and putting pressure on my organs. I rolled around in bed for 3 hours just wishing somone would stab a hose in my stomach to relieve the pressure. I'll spare some of the details afterwards, but basically I still feel bloated despite going to the bathroom about 12 times in the last 5 hours...but some of the pressure/pain/uncomfortableness has subsided. Called in sick for work...but not sure what I should be doing. I have a feeling I'm getting dehydrated as I've lost quite a bit of weight...but drinking or eating anything makes me feel like my stomach will bloat even more and bring the pain back. I'll give it an hour or two...as things seem to slowly be getting better...but if not, I suppose I'll call my doctor. |
