Well, I'm glad you are at least getting some hill's in. 2 weeks!

Yep. I was at the beach on Saturday and today and man was the water cold. I'm swimming the Charles River 1 mile race this Saturday purely as a OWS tuneup. I expect to freeze even with the wetsuit.

Swimming the race not for time but for proper pacing and spotting. I don't care what my time is as long as those two things go well.

OK, I need advice. I didn't get a chance to workout Saturday or Sunday due to festivities, etc. So, I went this afternoon. Well here on the VA/NC border, it can get hot and humid and it was. So, I biked 45 mins and had every intention of running 30, but I got really hot in the pavement with the sun shining down on me. I hydrated well and everything, just started feeling sick and HOT, so I walked some. I realize there are going to be races in the heat -- granted they are in the morning. But, I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for working out in the heat and getting used to it.

It was in the 90's and humid as hell in Massachusetts today. No real way to avoid it except start your ride at 6AM like I did. By the time I was done it was 8:20AM and already 74 degrees. Even at that early hour I was soaked from sweating on the bike never mind the run.

Charminchick - I work evenings and then swim after work so I tend to run when it is hot.  I think you just run or bike slower or shorter and acclimate to it.  That way you are ready for race day conditions.  That's just what I do but I hear you on the heat.  It was 84 degrees when I ran 3.5 miles today, so I just keep it slower than usual.  Also, finished by a pond at the park and went wading to cool off.  Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  I think I sweated out more than I drank!

Did my first OWS in the new wetsuit and I love it.  It wasn't cold but refreshing (after run in 84 degrees).  That said, this is a totally different thing than swimming in the pool.  I have a month and plan to put in lot of OWS time to get used to it.

scout142 - 2011-05-30 6:02 AMDid a mock tri: 750 meter swim at TT pace (16'), biked 30' - mostly high Z2 low Z3 (stationary bike - don't trust distance/pace), then 30' run in high Z2, with a mid Z4 finish picturing the glory of crossing the finish line in a couple weeks! Smile

Enjoy the holiday everybody!

Welcome back bro!  Very nice mock tri TT!  How did you feel after?  Did you reward yourself with a nice steak like me and thor?  hehehe ^_^

I'm glad that you've incorporated TI into your swims. Did you buy your 310xt yet?

Haha!  I almost ordered one this weekend but I remembered about the weddings coming up and I wanted to buy some presents for the bride and groom.  If I have any money left I'm gonna buy one!  =)  I'm a bit concerned about its size though.  I have very small wrists which measure about 6" and my current HRM watch barely fits (latched all the way to the last notch).  Will you please look at yours and see if it will wrap around my wrist's measurement?  Thanks.

I'm with you there Linda!  My wetsuit is due for delivery near the end of June!  Practice time yeah!  Keep it up!  Your hands, feet, and face didn't feel cold eh?  Probably not since it was 84F out there. =)

Well, when you say you are hydrated what do you mean? What were you drinking? When you sweat you lose sodium in you as well. Were you replacing that? It sounds to me, you were under nutritioned and possible beginning stages of heat stroke.  Heat is tough, usually races are in the morning. Try doing some of your workouts close to the race times.  Try to stay out of the peak sun hours from 12-4. Drink lots of fluids!

Yeah water Temp was 55 degs this past weekend. With the wind south west, that will be cold. We need the wind to be North East to bring some of that warm water on land.

Well, just remember it's really not that different. The mechanics are the same, but you're not fighting to stay afloat. I'm glad you have a plan though, glad you enjoyed it.

This strap, will wrap all the way around. There are ton of women on my Tri team who are very very small that wear this. I don't think you'll have a problem. Weddings? What's that...

Second day in the new lane. I'm good with the shorter stuff but those 6 200's at the end are fast and I was dying by the end. A 3:10 200 back to back really is a 400 6:20 for me. I got about three big breaths and had to go.

Let's see those monthly totals for May for some inspiration!!!

May's totals:
Bike:17h 05m 23s  - 304.98 Mi
Run:7h 48m 57s  - 50.14 Mi
Swim:9h 50m  - 27425 Yd

My Run totals were down from 58 miles the previous two months however that's because I nearly doubled my bike mileage with the nice weather finally arriving. Overall pretty happy with my month.

No, I need to do that for the summer. I usually reserve GU just for races. I also got the electrolyte fizz's for water that I think will help.

Hey everyone!  Due to work, illness, and some family obligations, I've been MIA of late.  Happy to report that things have slowed down a bit.  I'm also very very happy to report that, despite it all, I didn't miss a single workout.

Anyway, looking forward to swapping ideas with all of you (though I must admit that I probably won't go back and read the 15+ pages I missed!)

That could possible be a reason as well. You're body still needs fuel no matter what temp it is out there. You have to fuel it every 20 mins or so depending on the intensity. Also, train how you'd race. Don't just use fuel on race day's as you might get GI problems.

Things seem to be going pretty well.  I can definitely see improvement in my swim and run times, but my bike fitness is lacking a bit.  Due to the bad weather this spring, I've only been outside to bike twice.  I have a trainer and don't mind riding it during the week, but I'd much prefer to do my weekend long ride outdoors.

In any event, my HIM isn't until October, so I've got plenty of time to get outside.

Know of a cheap way? Gels can be expensive, so can other supplements. How about gatorade alone?

In the past, I've used the powdered Gatorade you can buy at the store.  It's way cheaper than the bottled stuff, plus you can add more/less water so that it's concentrated to your liking.
