Thanks in advance!! Hi! Are you new to Triathlon? Or are you new to HIM's? I only ask because Lake Michigan can be a teddy bear or a grizzly bear....depending on the day. So I don't want to provide any mis-information based on my experiences. |

I have run many half marathons and have already biked 50 plus miles on the bike the swim is what I am worried about. It is my personal goal to the HIM in 2013. My suggestion is to take it slow and see how your feel with swimming a 1/2 mile for the sprint. Then maybe do an Oly to get a feel for the difference of going from 1/2 mile to close to a mile in open water. I started triathlons in 2005 and didn't do my first HIM until 2007. I'm an incredibly strong swimmer (36 min for swim in Racine this year). But I wanted to make sure I had all the pieces in place before attempting 1.2 miles in Lake Michigan. Racine is a great race and I would recommend it for your first HIM. Just keep in mind, the lake is a beast of its own. One year there were 3-5 ft swales until the first buoy. The next year the water temp was 51 degrees and there was a fog over the water...very dangerous. The last two years the water has been a sweet 68 or so and relatively calm. Here's a link that ranks all the Ironman 70.3: http://www.runtri.com/2010/08/toughesthardest-vs-easiestfastest-hal... Good luck! Cyndi |

Member 11 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread This past year was my first time doing an HIM and my first time swimming in lake michigan. (although i did go to the course to practice). For the water, you swim straight out (east) about 200 meters (totally guessing) to the first buoy. Then you head south along the shore line. I don't believe I could touch at all along the way.
on race day, the water was awesome. great temperature and very calm. you could see great also. but one time i went to practice at North Beach and it was a bear. I was getting thrown all over the place, it was FREEZING, and nearly felt sea sick while swimming. (this was only 1-2 weeks before race day) so as stated previously, you never know what you are going to get. hope this helps. |

On a clear day you can see the bottom, but you'd have to swim towards shore to eventually touch. Although I'm not sure how far you'd have to swim to touch. I know there is a sand bar that runs along the swim...we swim over the sand bar to get to the first turn. The swim is a point to point. Swim out about 200 yards (might be a bit further) turn right, swim parallel to the shore, turn right then swim in. |

Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread Winter is the perfect time to work on your swimming skills. Build up your distance inside and then get in any open water you can come spring. Sorry just assuming you live somewhere with weather If you can get your mileage up you can get over your concerns easily by July, with work of course. I think it's manageable if you can get in area lakes for as many OWS's as you can. Are you near Racine or Kenosha? |

Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread I definately don't think you are crazy for trying to reach this goal at all. I would see how your race goes and how the swim continues to build. It is the most dangerous portion of the events and shouldn't be taken lightly. Lots to consider out there (traffic, sighting, getting kicked or hit, panic attacks)! I would try to progress and get an olympic in early next spring or late this year if possible and see how you did. In the end it's about putting all 3 pieces together and having a successful race. If you build up your training you can succeed at this distance, will just be a matter of when you would be ready. Send me an email anytime you want, happy to help! |

It is a personal goal that I have set for myself and just want to make sure I am not crazy with trying to reach this life goal for myself. This year was my first HIM too. If you can, do the Olympic distance triathlon in Fairmont Minnesota in June. (http://www.fairmonttriathlon.org/) They do a .93 mile open water swim and it was the best practice I had to prepare for Lake MI. They do the event between two lakes and pick which lake you swim in based on wind direction that morning. So you have a chance to get a few waves, but not so much that it freaks you out. It's a low key event so wetsuits are allowed no matter what the temp is. Great practice all around. Between Fairmont, Mankato and Jackson Minnesota, there are Triathlon clubs that all do open water swimming practice days. They all have their own facebook pages, check them out if you are close enough to them. |

12 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread Ok this is probably a totally awkward question, but how do you make the transition from a wet suit into your biking/running gear? I am thinking about wearing a wet suit for my race coming up on Sept 1st but have no clue how the transitions work. Can someone please help fill this newbie in? I am thinking about wearing a wet suit for my race coming up on Sept 1st but have no clue how the transitions work. Can someone please help fill this newbie in? Diane (I hope that is your name? if not, I apologize ), all your gear will be set up in one spot - usually a towel on the ground right by the bike (that's about all the space you'll have).. so you rack your bike and lay out all your biking and running gear on the towel. You will wear your tri shorts, bra and tri top (or whatever you choose to wear) underneath the wetsuit. When you are done with the swim, you run back into transition to your bike, take the wet suit off (in HIM races, a lot of times, there will be strippers to help you get out of the wetsuit), put your cycling shoes, helmet, sunglasses on, grab the bike, walk it out of transition and pedal away. You come back to the same spot again, change into running shoes and whatever other gear and take off toward the Run Out sign and go run. You finish at the Finish Line, which is generally very close to transition. To give you a real life example, here is how my day went at Steelhead this past Sunday: 1. Tri shorts, bra and a singlet (just used for swimming to cover up) underneath the wetsuit for the swim. 2. T1 (swim to bike)- take wetsuit off, take singlet, goggles and swim cap off. Put on cycling jersey, sunglasses, gloves, cycling shoes, grab bike, bike 56 miles. 3. T2 (bike to run)-rack bike, take helmet, jersey, cycling shoes off. Put a running shirt and a running skirt on (right over the shorts), running shoes, hat, grab bottle with Infinit, go run 13.1. 4. Cross the finish line, grin, cry, eat pizza. hth! If not, ask away... |

New user 23 Deerfield | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread You definitely want a wetsuit for Lake Michigan. First-off, to help with your fear of the swim, it helps you float like a bobber. You can literally lay back with your hands and feet out of the water and float without treading. Second, Lake Michigan can be a cold, cold lake. We were fortunate to have a cooperative weather pattern before this year's race (and ridiculously hot temps) to help warm the water to 68 this year. A large group of us went out for a recon swim a two weeks prior to this year's race and the water might have been 50 degrees. Stinging hands, face, numb feet... it was COLD! I'll predict the next question- full sleeve or sleeveless. If you are hesitant with your swimming ability, get the full sleeve. If nothing else, it will keep you warmer, and thus calm you down.
I'm in for 2013. Round 2 of my HIM life. |
