Good Morning folks!  I know Dave put some info on posting pictures somewhere, but for the life of me I can't seem to find the page.  I did upload a photo I was going to use for my profile to an album, but can't find how to post it as my profile.  What am I missing?  I am looking at doing 2 triathlons prior to the "biggie" Racine 70.3,  Would the recommendation for my first triathlon ever be for a sprint or olympic length?  My first one will be in West Salem (both lengths available) about 5 wks prior to Racine and then I was thinking of doing the one in Pleasant Prairie June 24th (3 wks prior to Racine).  Does this seem to be good spacing?

Also, I'd just like to say I think Quincy and Dave are doing an awesome job mentoring.  I feel like I'm in good hands.  Thanks everyone for your music suggestions.  I spent sometime this weekend loading a tune from everyone on my MP3 for the inspiration!

Q and Dave have been amazing as has everyone else.  I have been trying to keep up with all the posts but it's been hard.  The competitive speech season ramps up beginning in January, so scheduling has been super hard as I have to schedule student coaching, grading, online materials updates, program review, etc., etc., etc.,  and my own training!  It all makes me think of the movie Airplane where one character keeps repeating, "I picked the wrong week to quit . . . " (drinking/smoking/sniffing glue/amphetamines).  However, I'm saying, "Looks like I picked the wrong week to start training!"  The saving grace is ALL of you and your inspiring stories, comments, music lists, EVERYTHING!!  So, I'm plugging along.

Dave - I think you posted about not trying to keep up with everything.  I'll try to keep that in mind.

Q - the photos of your calendar system were amazing!!  Clearly, I need that in my life.  While it's only the DH and me (we don't have kids), it's still pretty hectic when we're both coaching and traveling. This weekend he's in St. Louis while I'm home

Now, I'm off to swim!!

+5 points for Movie Quoting!!!!! Airplane is one of my favorites (possibly because I am a pilot and can I tell you some of the aviation jokes are a little close for comfort) Roger roger, over under, get me a clearance clarence, what's your vector victor...kills me every time.

Other awesome movies for quotes:

Sixteen Candles, "yes, he's wearing red sweater, tan pants, and argyle socks. NO, he's not retarded!" "No more yankie my wankie, Donger need food."

Blues Brothers, "Gotta go see the Penguin!" "we're on a mission from God."  "It saddens and hurts me to think that the two boys I raised to believe in The Ten Commandments have returned to me as thieves, with filthy mouths and bad attitudes!" Basically the whole movie is quotable.

Same with Monty Python's "Holy Grail" "How do you know he's the king? He hasn't got sh** all over him." What's the airspeed of an unladen swallow? African or European? (about Camelot) "On second thought, let's not go there, it's a silly place." Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries. Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!"

Top Gun (your ego's writing checks your body can't cash), Goodfellas (funny, how? funny like a clown), Caddyshack (be the ball Danny!), Office Space (I was told I could play my radio at a reasonable level, someone's got a case of the mondays), Anchorman, Happy Gilmore, Blazing Saddles, The Big Lebowski, Animal House, Dumb and Dumber, The Jerk, Old School, Pulp Fiction, Fletch, Casablanca...heck I even have one from the Amazon Queen I love (I now pronounce you man and wife, now proceed with the execution!"

What are your favorite movies? Favorite Quotes?

Sorry I went a little overboard here...apparently I DID pick the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!

Oh man, you hit the sweet spot w/movie quotes right there. As I'm in a skiing frame of mind I have a couple going through my head, "that John Denver's full of sh!!t, man!",  "Uh....Shaving", "He's skiing on one ski!".

Pretty much anything Tarantino, especially quasi Quentin's True Romance. Old Sandler, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Spinal Tap, Some fistaphobia from Midnight Run. My kids get a healthy dose of "I'm just saying, if I were your accountant" whenever they disagree with me. Oh, and of course, History of the World: part 1.

Sorry I went a little overboard here...apparently I DID pick the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!

OMG  I picked the wrong week to stop shooting meth!  (I have stopped cooking it, so that's a good thing right there)

MOVIE QUOTES!!!   Do not get me started with this.     I make it a point to re-watch all of these classics with my girls. In fact, i feel its my duty.  lol

Q-  you have one heck of a list there  that I would also have.

Holy Grail-   "The knights demand a SHRUBBERY!"    or ANYTHING Python!

Airplane-  me and my buddies literally stayed in the theater and watched it 3 times in a row.  it was the funniest thing we had ever seen to that point in our lives.      "I have a drinking problem!"    "everyone get into crash position!"

"There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?"

Blues Brothers- OMG  I think living in the Chicago area adds to fun of this movie.    I have used this quote many times.  "Our lady of blessed acceleration,  don't fail me now!"

Caddyshack-   "Remember Danny - Two wrongs don't make a right but three rights make a left."

Young Frankenstein- "PUT the candle back!"

Planes, Trains and Automobiles!  Q that hotel they went to in the movie where they trade the watch for the room, is that same motel right next to Fatman's!!!

Field of Dreams-   I love the Moonlight Graham stuff.   And baseball and its history has always fascinated me.

American Flyers- THIS is a great but corny cycling movie   "res firma mitescere nescit"  see the movie if you want to know what that means.   "Marcus, how can you be sick....  you got that moustache and everything"        David,  I want you to meet my training partner Eddie!

I love Apollo 13    With all the engineers etc  complaining to Gene Kranz  following the disaster with the oxygen tank exploding.    "Gentleman,  failure is not an option!"     "let's look at the problem from a status perspective,  What do we have on the spaceship that works?"

Jaws, The Jerk, Kingpin, Austin Powers, Get Smart (ok thats tv, but there are some GREAT lines in there)

The outlaw Jose Wales-  "Not a hard man to track, leaves dead bodies wherever he goes"

really the list is endless.

This is Awesome!

peterflagg - 2012-01-28 3:55 AM Totally off touch but I have to share this moment with all of you. For all that do not know me, I weighed 304 back in October and was diagnosed with diabetes. Being a nurse I see the horrors of it and I had 2 options. 1) let the disease control me or 2) control the disease as much as possible. I choose to control it, I have lost over 70 lbs so far and yesterday bought my first shirt size large and it fits perfectly. I am so happy about that. Now back to our normal training!

Pete-  Happy for you!   Great outlook!   we have to make sure to keep spreading the message to our type 2  compadres.

Thank you so much for the kind words...

Yes!  thanks

Not sure about west salem as a choice, but the timing is excellent. Have you checked race reports on it? I always kick off with a sprint...almost no recovery cost and excellent transition practice. For your first, honestly I don't see why it HAS to be a sprint if you are bent on an OLY, but it does give you all of the elements of a tri with the least recovery cost...one thing I like about sprints (and olys to a lesser extent) is that you will get religion about transitions really quick...if you're a typical new triathlete, you will look at your times and realize you could have moved up several places just by getting your act together in transition...

Sure  its a good plan.   I don't know West Salem  either but I remember its a super sprint distance.  Agree with Q  its fine.

I think Dave is doing PP this year and I think my husband will be doing it as well...I have to see if my shoulder is in any condition to swim by then...and if it is I will only attempt the sprint (PP swim was a beyotch...Racine was WAY easier)...

I thought WE  were going to do Big Foot?   no?  hmmm.       Todd, PP will be perfect as Racine prep.    Book it Dano!

but the Oly is perfect dress rehearsal for Racine...you can practice your pacing and some nutrition, and you'll start feeling some fatigue on the run that you'll have to fight through...

X2

Plus, the PP run course is unshaded which will be good practice for the Racine death march run.

Awwww  don't spoil that fun lil surprise about Racine.    VERY HOT 2 years in a row.   Oh and the Zoo they talk about?  I saw one enclosure.  and there was no animal in it.

Does this help? I think you're right where you need to be with your planning. I forgot, are you using a plan? A BT plan? I can't remember...if I get a chance I'll look back...

been looking at your logs.  You are swimming/Running well.   But you do have some bike work to do.  But I think you know that and will do well with that too.    But you still need to get and get used to the aero bars.    Beyond that, its the transition work and running off the bike that you will need to practice.       You are in fine shape really.  No worries.

ALRIGHT Alright!   Settle down people!   lol   we need a comedy break.

This fits the bill on two levels.

There is an element of frugality, as it is a used item found on Craigslist.

Its also about Yoga.

Ok I'll be quiet for a sec.    Check this link out.  You will not regret it.

Craig's list used Yoga mat!

Classic!!

I laughed out loud at this line(which probably reveals alot about me)

"I consider that if anyone in this room farted that we would all certainly perish."

Ted-  Since you like this type of humor,  you will LOVE this one.

Woke up a little bummed this morning that I wasn't racing the brewery run 10 miler. I was really looking forward to this race as it went through my hometown and cause I really like beer, particularly the free variety Cool. It was the right thing to do though, had a great morning with the kids and threw down a 10 bagger in my neighborhood so win/win! I'll down a coupla Bluepoint Ales tonight w/dinner and all will be right with the world! My buddy Bobby(Dream Chaser) smoked the course w/a 1:08 despite fighting a groin injury since the fall. Fast dude.

Whats everybody else got going on this weekend?

Glad you got that run in!  I'm with you.  Those old hometown races are special.    Sorry about the ski trip.      now for the important question.    Did you find the opportunity to have the Bluepoint Ales?

So my goal for February is to make it completely pink, in honor of Dave's birthday.  He's inspired me.  Besides, what 52 yr old doesn't want to be challenged by a 32 yr old.  Wait a minute, I'm old enough to be his dad.  "Luke, I am your FATHER" LOL

Quincy & Dave, you guys are doing a great job.  I even came home tonight a did my bike for 30 minutes after my 12 hour shift.  OK, did you guys spike the kool aid?

One more thing:  another pound bites the dust, woo hoo.

Tom

HI Gang,  I haven't felt well the last few days, and not sleeping well either.  Hence, training suffered.  Great reading all the cost savings.  I'm seriously watching what I spend.  House is in foreclosure and income is way down.  After I bought the new shoes, that will be it for a while.  I'm glad I feel I'm a good swimmer and I'm happy working on my running and cycling.  I've made the decision that I will enter a race close to the last minute because money is so tight and I don't want to risk loosing $$'s if I don't go.  I may enter fewer ones, but my goal is to enter, at the very least, the one that will be 10 miles from home.

Tom

Tom, the good news is, working on the engine is free! I am in the same boat as far as entering races...I can't begin to figure out how my body is going to be acting, so if that means giving up a race that sells out to avoid losing the entry fee, so be it.

Sorry Tom, that really sucks. Good advice above and as others have mentioned probably good for the stress.

No biggy;  I'm still thinking about that race on LI.  We could meet up.

Ok so just got out of my physical therapy session and good news is...they are letting me run again...bad news is that I have to restart the c25k program all over but I can run again so I am trying to be positive about that. I just get super frustrated because I want so much, hell I want it all. In my mind I can do a IM, not win but complete it. However I know that I am not physically able to yet so I do get bummed out a bit. Baby steps but at least they are steps I tell myself.

Hi everyone.  Been off the grid these last days b/c the Super Bowl madness in my town and with work.  It's crazy fun...but busy!  I've also been dealing with some low back issues.  About every 9-10 months I have this issue.  I'll get super tight and lots of pain in my low, low back.  Usually keeps me from training at all for a good week and then have to ever-so-slowly ramp back up.  Lots of icing, stretching and a few visits to the chiropractor.  Well, this time, I felt it coming on late last week and started in with icing and stretching right away.  Took 3 days off running, which is a lot for me.  Knock wood...I think I nipped it in the bud...before it got bad.  Fingers crossed.  Ran this morning and felt good.  No pain...just a little tightness.

Anyhoo...hope you're all doing well and will try to jump back on this week in the midst of the hoopla surrounding me in Indy!  Going to try to attach a photo...this is right outside my office downtown.  So cool!

The good news is you can get back into running! Yeah! I know it's frustrating (having had 3 stress fractures myself) but go slow because you don't want to deal with more injuries! That's how I'm approaching it

Tom

Tom-   Thanks for the kind words.      And congrats on another pound lost   you are improving so much!

I'm not 28 or 32.  I should have used the sarcasm font when I posted.   I just turned 49 this weekend.  ugh  I just feel like I'm 32!!     My body may be old, but inside I still act and feel young.       So you cannot be my father.  But you can be my older brother

Something else I have to add in here.    I do not believe that training every day of the week is smart or good for anyone.   I just got this stupid idea in my head to run everyday no matter what.     Training is stress-recover stress recover.  process.   Train everyday and you are hard pressed to recover properly.  OR  you do not go hard enough in training cause you know the next day you are going to be back at it.   Its just not the smart thing to do. That's why my blog is titled "Damn the torpedoes"

I've been running now for many years and this helps to lower the chances of me getting injured.   You do not have that same luxury as of yet.      Train 5-6 days per week.    and take 1-2 full rest days from training.

In any case keep up your positive energy!  you are helping us all stick with our own training goals feeding off your excitement!

Glad you "listened to your body" and knew what do to.     That is a really good picture!  looks professional to me.

Can you imagine what the city would have been like had the Colts made it to this years Super bowl?   wow.

Pete-   slowly i turn, inch by inch, step by step,  Niagra falls.   whoops 3 stooges reference there.

Seriously if you want IM  you can do it.  but its a multi year process.     Having done IM-WI  a few months ago.   I can tell you that the reality is that the journey itself IS the fun part.    So each step you take, each day of training, the ups and downs you need to enjoy the moment.  Rock the injuries,  and roll with the easier times.     For sure try to have that perspective with everything you do, cause really the Journey is the fun part.   (yes I'm going to keep saying that)    race day is a celebration.       What you have already accomplished with your change in life style,  should tell you that yes you can accomplish anything.         But be sure to enjoy it all. even the baby steps.

As Yvonne said ramp up slowly to avoid injury.    (wow 3 stress fractures-  But not stopping you Yvonne!

That is one of my all time favorite stooges quotes/scenes. Love Laurel and Hardy also. God the formative years were so great! I do have to tell myself that I have to go slow. I get frustrated but it is a process. I think that doing an IM wouldn't happen for at least 3 years, but a HIM? Maybe 2, of course that might be aggressive. There is part of me that does not want to go on for my masters in nursing just because I want time to train. I know that might sound dumb but I just have to think about it for a bit. Just so everyone here does not think I am off my rocker, I do know that I can never make a living off doing IM's, of course now saying that if I found someone willing to pay me I always would take them up on it. If only my gf would get a job as an attorney making a boatload of cash. I would definitely be 01 on the insurance card then. LOL.

Thanks for the words back at you.  I just feel like I missed some training.  But I do agree about the recovery part too.  I think that will happen on Sunday with BEER.

Just can't wait to HIT THAT WALL!  LOL
