One more post from me -- just an update on my training. I officially started HIM training for CA 70.3 which is 3/31. I have a new coach that is taking me from where I am and starting the base from there, so I am working it. I've swam five days this week and ridden 115 miles and ran about 7 or 8 (not much but my long run is Sat.). So, I been a bit tired. Today was just a masters swim and easy 60 minute spin on the bike.

I actually feel pretty good right now. Seems like the trend will be start on the weekend, build to Tues. and Wed. and then coast a bit until Saturday. I'm going to have to feel it out with this new coach, but I think it's a very good thing! That is all.

tonights trainer was money!  35 minutes plus warmup.  I can feel the strength rushing back with every work out.  Maybe it was mental hurdles for the first week but i'm not sure what sort of energy i've been coasting on during my last few workouts.  I feel like my year end goal of a marathon is reachable already.

I'm really focusing a lot of my efforts on eating better.  Today for lunch I had a spinach salad w/ red peppers, broccoli, green peas, feta cheese, and non fat tomato dressing.  Breakfast I had a mornin' sunrise size flatbread sandwich from subway w/ american cheese, egg white, spinach, and tomato.  For dinner I had some spicy spicy shrimp on dirty rice with toast on the side.  A couple of diet sodas and glasses of V8 Fusion (LOVE THAT STUFF) rounds out my day.

At work every time I need to go up or down stairs I try to sprint up to the next floor.

I'm even parking farther away from the door on purpose (that and Iowa got up into the 60s today!)

I need to somehow get a membership to the secret gym, nobody is ever staffing the desk when it's convenient for me.  Maybe i'll have to go over my lunch break.

Hope everyone is kicking butt!

p.s. My son is feeling much better after resting A LOT and getting his fluids back under control.  It was scary for us though - he's never been this sick.  Here's a picture of us from the doctor's office last night.

Glad he's feeling better!  I agree with you that your year end goal of a marathon is doable.  You have plenty of time to slowly build up your mileage and if you do something akin to Galloway there's no doubt you can accomplish it.

Asalzwed - 2012-01-06 1:48 PM Hi guys! Done with my first leg! 8.7 miles about 80 degrees and 18 kills. I'm loving the heat. Currently reading the gator survival guide for my next leg. Cross your fingers. Random: there was a stuffed manatee in our hotel! I took it to bed with me

I was going to say that in winter the gators aren't active (you could actually step right over them, although I wouldn't recommend it), but then I saw the 80* temp.  So, nevermind, keep reading

kgore - 2012-01-06 5:06 AM ...and how quickly things change. My throat was feeling a bit scratchy right after my ride yesterday; its about the same today. Hopefully, this is as far as that goes. Of course, then I apparently did something to my back too---I am in so much pain!! I didn't go to work because of it---so no running for me today as well. Grrr. this just has me down in the dumps...whine, whine, whine....Cry

You've laid down a LOT of training this week in addition to having a very active job and it's likely your body is not-so-politely informing you ... REST!!!

I did forget to mention that my mom's BFF (they've outlived all their other friends, basically) runs an orangutan rescue/transition center that she lives in smack in the middle of our national zoo here in Jakarta. My mom goes and visits her every day. While yes, there are a ton of orangutans about--it's actually really fun to go when they all come out to play, I should tag along again one of these days--it's really an all-kinds-of-anything rescue center. Animals move on to rehabilitation centers, other zoos or refuges if possible, but if not, they stay right there with Ulla. Hornbills, lorises, bats (yes they come back ... odd), chimps, monkeys of all varieties, baby tigers, all manner of dogs and cats, you name it ... sit there for 10 minutes and there will be at least three different kinds of adorable faces looking up from your lap and several others swirling around your feet, or hanging from the ceiling, or trying to swoop in and steal your cake.

Everyone gets along. It's quite remarkable. She is quite the Dr. Doolittle/Konrad Lorenz/what have you.

I would love to visit this center!

You're happily single too ... nothing to tie you down ... COME ON OVAH anytime!!! (warning ... every BTer who's come to visit has had the time of their life BUT has also gotten waaaaaay more than they bargained for ... needed weeks to recover).

Let us know how your new toys work out.

Thanks for the invite!  I will definitely keep it in mind as vacations get planned.

Oh, I want to go too!!!!!!!

I felt a bit better today--back-wise; still a bit stiff and sore, but I was able to get a little loosened up at least. It helped that the husband was kind enough to give me a really good back massage last night. Unfortunately, the throat is still scratchy--I'll hit up the cold meds so I get extra sleepy tonight! Another stroke of good fortune, I did find out that my health coverage will cover chiropractic exams/treatments--and one of the ones that uses my health plan is just up the street from me. I'll have to look into getting an appt.

The plan, as of now, is to hit the pool tomorrow, then run on Sunday...

Thanks for the food suggestions, i will be doing some shopping today.

Must let you know about today. It's my 7th day without smoking and its really making a difference. The weather here in the UK has been pretty rubbish for most of the week (50mph+ winds etc) but today it has settled so i did 6 miles on the bike then straight onto my 30 minute run with just a 2 min transition. Never done this before so i was really happy that my run time was only 30 secs slower than the last time i did the route.

The only down side has been the issue of chafing, which i have not experienced before and i guess is down to the fact that i have done a full hour of non stop bike/run which is longer than i have done before. Will wearing proper running shorts cure this as i am still jogging in standard sweat pants/ jogging bottoms (not sure what you americans call them). Still trying to improve my wardrobe as until joining BT, i had not needed exercise clothing of any type for years. Will eventually get all the kit i need but have to build it up slowly as funds allow. Due to chafing i guess my next purchase should be running shorts.

Body Glide is your friend!  If you don't have it in England, I'm sure you have a similar product.  It is an anti-chafe product that looks like solid deodorant.  If worse comes to worse, a little vaseline will work too.

Per my son-in-law's sister's FB, still waiting!!   I watch her FB because she will probably post immediately, long before we get a phone call from the new mama (she'll be a little busy).

I thought about how good of a day today would be to have a new grandbaby (sort of hoping for a girl).  I just went for my first pain-free run in forever!!!   Its beautiful and sunny here in Michigan, 50 degrees.  Perfect day, a total gift!!  It would be a good karma day for a new baby!!  **fingers crossed**

Selfishly, I want her to have it NOW because I want them all home and settled and in a routine by the time I get there next Saturday.  Its all about me!!   I want a vacation when I visit!!  Totally about ME!!  Its how I roll!  I raised my kids, grandbabies are fun to visit!

You have a bike trainer or not? I'm thinking no as you usually ride outside.

As there seems to be lots of food related posts about, have you guys got any suggestions for filling, healthy snacks/nibbles. I am eating healthy all day but come the evening, i am desperately hungry and reach for the crisps, last of the christmas chocolate and mince pies just to fight off the craving. I think the problem is caused by my increased activity and stopping smoking. Its a killer combination and i am having trouble keeping the munchies at bay.

If i cant stop nibbling, my weight goal will be missed and i will deserve a thwacking.

Certainly not, as fun as it might be to thwack you. For the fact that you're deep into your free-breathing path, I'd cut yourself some slack on the food/weight issues. The most important thing is to try, and to keep trying/progressing. I might not focus so much on a specific weight. Also, the training will slowly change your body composition, which is significant even though the weight itself might not change.

"come the evening, I am desperately hungry" don't let yourself get there. I would eat MORE during the day, healthy food like apples or carrots if you need crunch. Lynn made some very good suggestions about trying to satisfy what you're craving with something similar (crunchy but low-fat if you need crunch, creamy low or nonfat yogurt if you need creamy, etc.)

Tri shorts! You can cycle and run in them, as well. (I've never had a problem running in cycling shorts but some people feel as if they are wearing a diaper). Running shorts aren't very good for cycling, though.

And I second the lube. Don't know what you can get in the UK but a running or cycling or even sports stores should have something. I also make good use of ahem "personal lubricant" that you can get at the chemists for rides and runs over a couple hours or so.

Nope, no trainer for me--It WAS my request for a Christmas present, but someone (a certain husband...) completely dropped the ball. Although, its been 60+ degrees, sunny, and dry pretty much every day from Dec. through today...so really, why would I want to stay in? That being said, the husband (okay, from now on, will be referred to by name: Clint) said he would have no problems holding said bike for pictures--and my camera has a good timer...

I made it to the pool today, after taking a writing test at the college (stupid requirement for graduation--duh, already PROVED I could write!!!Yell) Anyway--I didn't push for crazy speed today--coach's orders--it was all about form. I managed in 1500 yards--not too bad really. Also, the back feels about 98%--so I am happy with that!

I've only had a little experience of a cherry flavoured one that unfortunately dried out quite quickly! I will bow to your obviously greater experience in this field and check out the chemist if i cant get anything more 'appropriate'.  Of course perhaps i should get the tri shorts first as it might cure the problem without the need for difficult conversations in Boots the chemist.

So glad you're feeling better!! Nice swimmy, too!
