IMTX Swim times are a lot slower this year than last year. I'm not really sure what is going on up there. Several of my friends are anywhere from 5-15 minutes off of their normal IM swim times. These are from wetsuit and non-wetsuit MDot races.

It is already pretty hot down here.

Go Jimmy!!!

I'm no longer seeing run splits for Jim.  Hope he's OK!

ETA:  OK, just saw the first loop split (missed the post above about that).  Waiting anxiously for the second!

I think he is fine ... I was looking at another runner and it only showed his first 8 mile split. Then 10 minutes after he finished the rest of the splits showed up. I have been watching the finish line live feed for a while.

It is now over two hours since his first 8 mile split time was posted.

So, I'll let you all know the diagnosis, since several have asked.  From my blog:

Apparently, according to the latest, I have Diverticulitis.  Yeah, I never heard of that either, and apparently it's an 'old person's disease' (60+), which is why they didn't at first think of it for me.  So I told the doctor that I'm a young man in an old man's body.  He tried to make me feel better by saying that sometimes middle-aged folks get it.  Thanks.  That helped.  I guess.

Anyway, he thinks that careful diet, including avoiding all dairy, could turn it around, so we're going to try that.  Actually, he said "we're going to try changing diet and increasing exercise before anything else".  Then I told him how much I exercise, and he said "OK, so we'll focus on the diet then."  Big thing for me will be avoiding dairy, which I love. (I'm a Wisconsin boy after all!)

Meanwhile, it still hurts even to take a step.  I said to him:  "How'm I supposed to exercise if every step is like a knife to the gut?".  Good point.  He gave me a prescription, which in general I'm not inclined to accept, but if it is truly temporary (one week) and it truly will allow me to train, then, well, I'm considering it.  Tomorrow will tell.  I'll sleep on it.

Michael, I know how it feels getting hit with a disease/sickness out of nowhere. I went to my annual physical last September after having successfully kept off 50lbs for 6 months. I went from 250lbs to 200lbs and thought I was in the best shape in a long time. So the doctor says to get a chest x-ray because I told him that it takes a while for me to get my breathing under control when I start running. (I did smoke for 17 years but quit in 2007.

I got a call from the doctors office the next day. They told me that I need an MRI on my chest because they saw something "unusual". So I went and got that done. My phone rings again the next day and my doctor tells me I need to see a Pulmonologist right away. Now I am getting scared ... lung specialist? Not a good sign!

I went to the lung specialist the next day who tells me he can't be sure without a lung biopsy what it is but it could be lymphoma. I almost fell out of the chair when he told me that! Me ... don't think I got that! ...

To make a long story a little shorter ... I got the lung biopsy done and found out I have Pulmonary Sarcoidosis. Too long to go into what exactly it is but it sucks to say the least! All you can do is fight it and do whatever it takes.

Jimmy ran the 2nd split in 2 hours and 2 minutes ... 14.24min/mile pace.

That was almost two hours ago ... he should be finishing here soon!

Michael-at least knowing what it is gives you an idea of how to deal with it.  Hopefully, medication and diet changes can get you back on the mend quickly.  I know this down time is driving you crazy.

Michael/d3term1ned-don't you have a race tomorrow?

Hope Jimmy can hold things together and finish strong.  I watched some of the live feed when Rapp was finishing and they said it was 85 degrees with high humidity this afternoon....tough day to race.

Just watching a stage of the Tour of California where they were climbing Mt. Baldy(?) looked absolutely brutal.  Makes me want to jump on a bike and train

Michael, sorry to hear about the diagnosis, but at least you know what the cause is and hopefully get it under control and get the pain to go away.

Yea, I was watching the ToC too.  Oh man it makes me want to ride! I'm headed for the mountains at the end of next week and hoping to hit it hard!

Michael, Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. While it isn't ideal at least it is something that you can somewhat control. Or at least that is my understanding of it.
Everyone that I know who has it can't eat nuts. Look on the bright side..now you can really get down to race weight. Not that you weren't already there when I saw you in March!!

IMTX tracking is really off as usual. Jimmy should be in if he isn't already!

Just saw the 25.5 mile split for Jim.  Tough day out there but he is going to make it!  The heat ad humidity were really brutal out there, so I hear.

Randy - I got my first Olympic Race tomorrow morning ... my wave gets in the water at 7.10am. I am terrified and the thought of sleeping right now .... not gonna happen.

I just saw Jimmy cross the finish line at 14 hours 29 minutes. He hobbled a bit and looked exhausted but he made it!

CONGRATULATIONS JIMMY!

I thought you were racing tomorrow!  Have fun and enjoy.  Looking forward to a good report!

Great job Jimmy.....Its been fun to follow your progress throughout the day.

Graduation first thing in the morning, then family brunch/lunch and then back on the road home...First off day from training in a few weeks....hesitate to call it a "rest" day.  All these folks racing has me itching to train/race.  2 weeks out from local sprint so it will be here soon.

Michael: So glad you have a name for the problem and a plan of attack. I hope the diet change makes the difference for you, and the week of meds will help with the pain. Hang in there! I know it'll be tough to give up something you so enjoy, but if it means feeling your old, young self, it'll be worth it and you won't look back.

Jimmy!! You did it!! How you feeling?!

As for me, it's my birthday. I'm 40! I've been through so much in these past 40 years. I'm grateful for who and where I am, and I have the wonderful people in my life for getting me here. That includes you guys! Thank you!
