Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A P1 w/Ultegra for $950 is an insane deal (assuming new). I Have a P2 and love it. While not exactly the same, Cervelo makes a heckuva bike.... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yah, bike is fixed!! Yes Steve, they gave me a new armpad for $10 and the rear cassette had just come loose! I guess I gotta get better at checking that stuff, but I don't think I have ever had a cassette come loose before, unless I just didn't tighten it enough when I put it on! Steve, I knew I would hear about that 22 mile run from you! Honestly, I have been so darned bummed out about my running the last year and a half that now that I am feeling quite a bit better I wanted to stretch it a bit and see how I felt! Again, legs felt no pain or fatigue but feet started hurting at about 16 miles, which is a lot better that before I would experience extreme pain after about 8 miles so I definitely see an improvement there! On another note; what is your nutrition during your run? My stomach is so very sensitive that far into the run, it is hard for me to take in calories! Gatorade seems too acidic and hard to consume any solids too! I know you had said you take in infinit, but is that during the run too? You can custom make your infinite, what kind of a mixture do you run? |
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I use infinit on the bike and Gu on the run. You can use Infinit on the run and I think they just came out with a new product. Other things are chomps, beens, heed, gels, ... not sure what else you might use. Edited by Baowolf 2012-05-21 9:56 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tri-solar - 2012-05-21 3:31 PM With the distance it is hard to get the full emotion (through this virtual connection) but personally with the time to reflect on my ups and downs, how can anyone be anything but impressed with all the personal struggles and sacrifices being made? Life transforming…. To say the least. After this last build I can definitely see the difference between a quality work out and fatigue loaded, mail it in. Personally after moving nearly half the 20 tons of stone, I rested Saturday and Sunday. Now I have a much better perspective and begin the build journey anew. Not sure how far I can go, but know that I can do more and better. I am looking for an OLY late August- September and you all are a great inspiration. Thank you for the encouragement! And I totally agree with what you wrote above. And yes, sometimes I think it is good to clear your head w/ a non tri related activity. Sounds like you are ready to move onward and upward! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Baowolf - 2012-05-21 3:34 PM Carol, even IM fitness is gone in a month if you just kick back (like you are supposed to do). The upside of a whole new bike is that those issues with spinning out too fast, probably needing to change out cables soon and marginal berrings would not be an issue. So front and rear chain rings $200, new chain must go with new chain rings $50, new frame $500, cables $20 (installed), aero bars $75 = $875 to fix your old bike up nicely. (not sure of frame cost). For 900-1200 ish you could get a Cervelo P1, Felt s32 or some such. Hrm. Not sure if you have a decent seat to transfer and newer pedals. I just looked Cervelo P1 with full Ultegra after taxes $918 (2011) and a Felt S22 (2012) for $908 (what I am currently riding). But I paid $1500 8(. I may have overdone my rest week last week, enjoying being speedy with very low fatigue load hitting my long run on 8:00 mpm pace, hitting the last swim hard, climbing the big hill on my bike... less energized for this noon run. I guess I will repeat last week and flop the wed run rest day to Tuesday again. It turns out I have meetings all day anyway so shrug probably works out for the best. On a positive note my scale read 150 pounds this morning. So just another 5-10 pounds to lose before the end of July...and then keep it off until December. Be careful in the offseason. An injury and a couple months with no real workouts can bring the weight back on quickly. Add in a little bummed out feelings, high work stress and holidays all stacked up and you get to where I was after Christmas 170 ish. Mental note do not stay at a house that has a 20 pound everfaunt of peanut M$Ms on the table and apple pie and icecream every night. At home pizza is my downfall, a couple extra slices of pizza will set back weight loss all week. Oh well down from notch 2 to notch 4 in my belt and extra room in my size 32 inch waiste pants 8). Getting there. These next 2 build cycles are going to be rough for me also, I am going to throw that big hill in every Saturday until the race.
Glad you got to enjoy a speedier week! Might as well enjoy the ride a bit Yes, options, options. I have a seat I really like (cobb-vflow max), pedals heavy and not so great, just had cables replaced + new tires + new bar tape + tune up (this was when the problem was discovered, so I have not had one single flippin' ride after all that was done....and paid for....ugh!!!). All 105 components in good shape. Was told I need to replace my casette and chain next time. Where the heck did you find those deals on the P1 and Felt? Oh, and on the loss of fitness, I guess I'm just surprised. I dropped back to 25 mpw running as I tried to ramp the cycling up, and would have thought that was adequate to at least maintain some semblance of feeling decent on the run. At the same time, summer is creeping in w/ higher temps and humidity, so probably all at play.

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got a 30 minute bike/15 minute brick in before work today. After work, it's off to the weight room for strength testing for the high school football team I help coach, coaching little league baseball, and then a quick 1600 yard open water swim before the sun goes down. Tomorrow at 5:00 a.m. it's a 6 mile run. Way better schedule than sitting on the couch!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol - the good news is, if you end up going with a new bike all the gear you put on your old bike can be sold to someone and you might be able to get close to what you paid. At the least, you will get some money. Or you could sell the whole bike as a parts bike. As long as the buyer knows there is a crack in the frame. I would be surprised about the fitness loss as well. This training thing is tricky like that Jim - 22 mile run! Wow. I think I remember reading that and wondering to myself what Steve might say, but it is great to hear you did it pain free. Have you experienced any pain since? Joe - you are really doing well in your training! Larry - I don't know how you keep up your schedule. I bet being 70 pounds lighter makes a huge difference in your every day life endurance, but still, you have some much going on. I bet you look forward to having summer's off! There is a small part of me that thinks I wimped out on the August HIM. When I went into my training plan this spring I told myself I would not sign up for the Aug. HIM until I felt I would do well and the final sign-up to get the lowest price is not until June, so really I am just adapting to current information. (This is me giving myself a pep-talk |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve -Your reply to me on your swimming made me feel like I was in an endless pool at the highest setting and I was being tumbled around like a washing machine :D Ha! It just sounds a little complicated, but you definitely know what you are doing. And please keep your toes from being eaten. Your feet would look funny without toes! here are my "Long SBR" training distances for Sept. 15 HIM plan. Anything you would add/change?

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This has been, and will be a busy week here. Work has been nuts the past few days, and I've been putting in long hours. I'm not doing well in the sleep department, and surprisingly (Not!) my training motivation has been quite low. Tomorrow I'm heading out of state for a few days with the family, so training schedules are out the window, and I'll get stuff done when/where I can. The following weekend is another out of state trip, so more juggling. I did get to the pool this AM, and after some warm up, felt good, and just hit it hard. I ended up doing 2600 yards in masters class with an average 100 pace of 1:31. toward the end of the set, there was a 200 yd 'steady' swim to do, and I was hoping to do it in under 3:00. The coach decided she would motivate me by giving me a 30 second head start and then see if she could catch me. She is a national level master swimmer who does sub 1:00 100's, so I had my work cut out for me. She did catch me at about 165 yards in, but just stayed on my feet to keep me pushing the swim. I pulled in at 3:03. Arrgghh! So close, but I was just gassed by the time I reached 150, and the last 50 was just gutting it out. Wow, was I tired at the end. I'm still feeling it! And am I ever hungry.... Will get up early tomorrow AM and hit the trainer for a couple hours before the family is up and we need to leave. Bringing my swim gear & running shoes, so I'm hoping to have a couple swims and good runs while away. Should be back Monday, and I'm doing a long bike upon return (60+ miles). Same deal next week. Race is only 24 days away... (!!! this is really going to happen ! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, the excitement you must be feeling is awesome. Great swim, by the way. I don't know if I'll ever get to your speed, but mine is improving. I had my main mid week run today, and went into it sore, tired, and not real motivated at 5:00 this morning. Some how, when I got a couple laps in at the track I started feeling much better. I ran for an hour, and my overall pace was 10:13, which included 12.5 minutes at 5K pace. The rest of my run was at a 10:35 pace. The same workout on April 3rd was at a 12:00 minute pace, and two weeks ago it was at 10:33, so I improved by 21 seconds per mile. On January 9th of this year, my first workout was a 1 mile run in 14:00 minutes. The entire first week my training was this same 1 mile plod two more times. Looking back where I started is helping me stay motivated on where I have to get to. I was looking at my training plan, which Steve helped with, and I see that I am down to three tough weeks, including this one. I've got a 55,60, and 65 mile bike, and a 12.5, 13.5, and 15 mile run left. I plan on doing an Olympic in a week and a half, a recovery week, two hard weeks, then taper for my half on July 15. This is my third build week in a row, and I feel like I'll be in the driver's seat if I can get through the long bike and run this weekend. |

I''m blown away by the progress you've made. You realize Jan 9th was just 135 days ago? I'm getting excited, but need to get my mojo going to. It may not be the glorious race I'd hoped it would be, but the challenge will certainly be there waiting. Ever since I was sick the end of April and missed 9 days of training, I don't feel like I ever got back on track with it. Some highs, and lots of lows, and have muddled through. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes Joe, very nice run indeed! Mike, hope you enjoy your trip. You will likely want to make your vacation runs early AM, as it's really heating up around here. Know what you mean about getting a bit discuraged after being off for a while due to illness. But I'll bet come race day, you will be rarin' to go! And wow, incredible swim speed! Larry, your progress is absolutely amazing, and sounds like you have a very solid plan. Steve, those websites look interesting. I'll be in Austin soon, so maybe see if that one has a physical location. Bike saga continues...waiting to hear back from the shop where the bike was originally sold to see if they can help me with a warranty replacement frame. Sent them some pics of the crack and the serial number last night, so we'll see. I'd also like to look at their bikes if new is how it goes. "My" bike shop came back w/ $1100 for a Giant frame....ummm....not! For the shorter term, God willing, I will likely be riding the rental bike (Specialized Dolce) in the OLY. This is assuming it is available as the end of this week. Can't reserve them in advance. If not, I may see about taking a friend up on her very kind offer to loan me her trainer bike. I just hate to take any risks with friend's stuff, and even her trainer bike is very nice. Had a good swim this morning. Kept it simple to swim some longer relaxed sets and then thought just for fun I'd see what my 50 yard speed looked like at the end. I was quite happy with 0:50....until I read Mike's post....sigh

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, I would pay some decent coin to be able to swim as fast as you, very nice job and how awsome to have a coach like that to work with. Sometimes when out of town I may rent a bike or hit a YMCA and do a stationary. It is not the same, but the legs do get moving. Vacations and work out of town are tough both for workouts and for diet. Mike, it will all come together on race day. The taper will take care of a lot of it and then your body will know what to do on race day. All you really have to do is not screw up the pacing on the bike and get in enough calories and you will do fine. There is an emotional part to the training that requires you to let go of the uncertainty and have faith in your training and yourself. It is part of the mind body connection, when the body is tired the mind becomes unmotivated and self-doubt creaps in as a defense. The body is like, I am not sure where you are going with this, but we can't build forever.... uncle already. Larry, very impressive run improvement. Ya HIM/IM has a few weeks where you don't really care about pace at all it is just get them done and survive until a recovery week. You are doing great! Carol, I was feeling alright in my swim on Sunday and did 50 ish yards in 52 seconds and then called for a medic (not really) at 50 seconds you are doing great in my humble opinion. Mike is on another playing field. Went to my son's sports banquet lastnight, he got most improved award with his personal best at small school competition of 5:11 for 1 mile. I am afraid that the day is fast approaching where he will beat me in a race. I will have to make sure it is at least a half mary to give myself a fighting chance. He can probably take me at the 5k distance at this point. So I hear the weather forcast for snow this week. I'm all snow... really? Edited by Baowolf 2012-05-23 10:47 AM |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol, I was checking on your logs, and it looks like you are tearing it up!! I also agree with your commment "wetsuit = good." I hope the bike thing works out. I was checking out some of the bikes Steve recommended, and I can't help but mentally figure out how I can pay for one. I could always go pack to online poker, but it got a little monotonous. I did pay for an inground pool with my winnings, which kept my wife off my back about the time I spent playing "that stupid game on the computer." |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve - Those are great moments when you see your kids doing so well. You must be very proud. It is nice to see people working their plans. The psychology of it all is whole other amazing aspect to this sport. Mike - you have persevered this far. There will be no problem doing well race time. Larry - Your improvement is amazing and you should be able to enjoy it much more than your brother in law did his race. Talking about swimming and kids, my daughter had a good meet against some stiff competion in the long pool (50m). She had a 1:25 on her 100M backstroke, 2:40 on her freestyle 200M, and 34:41 sec on her 50M free. Not sure if I will ever catch her although I think I might keep up for the first 25M. She is the reason i am getting back in shape and even thinking about this Tri stuff. |
