CLOSED RunningJoke - 2013-01-18 10:41 AM I trained some of the time with HR last year (more this year) and one of the best benefits for me as a completely new cyclist was I got much better at gauging my own effort accurately. While I have a pretty good speedometer in my brain for running I had NO idea what I was doing on the bike, but after intermittently using the HR monitor I was much better at monitoring my breathing and guessing what zone I would be in before I looked at my watch. And until I win that point series ($500!), there's no power meter in my immediate future... Anyone planning new equipment purchases for this year? I'm thinking about an aero helmet. They look so funny, but I realized in looking at some photos that I am faster than some of the people who race in them around here. What do you think, does that give me permission to wear one? Happy Friday, everyone! I have hit most my workouts so far this week, feeling a little sore and tired, but looking forward to a weekend of longish runs and bikes and slightly warmer temperatures here. Working a bunch of shifts next week, so we'll see what kind of a hit the training takes... I am going to add the aero helmet this year. I am seriously considering switching to a crank based power meter this year, but I have gone hot and cold on that before. For at least 2 of my 4 long races, the aero helmet will provide some cheap speed. Glad that your training went well this week! |

I won't name names........ but there are a few of us who are pretty much always plotting to make new equipment purchases. This has been a support group in the past! LOL
I've got a pain cave project going on now. When it's done, I'll be looking at getting a new treadmill, wahoo fitness trainer or computrainer, and some other weight/workout equipment. I'm also hoping to upgrade my road bike this year and I'm sure that will need some wheels. Lastly, I'm contemplating selling one of my mountain bikes and moving to a 29er for Xterra racing and my own trail enjoyment! Or all of the above! |

Expert 1051 San Jose | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Thanks Nate and Becky for the Florida links. I'll look around and see if I can find a race that will work for us. I was out late last night and didn't make it up early for swim this morning. I hate missing a workout and I'm still having a hard time committing to early mornings again It's frustrating. I just have to keep pushing myself to do it. The good news is we're warming back up to normal Northern California winter temps so it won't be 33 on the pool deck for now. |

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Well my training has hit a road block yesterday, today and most likely through next week as well - my teeth!!! My dentist appt. revealed a need for a tooth canal which is on Tuesday. He went ahead and did some work on that tooth and I was in soooo much pain yesterday. Today I get to go back on work on another tooth - don't know how I am going to handle it as the other side is still in pain - maybe I will ask him just to numb my whole mouth. More good news though - with the ability to not eat solid food I finally got off the 7 pounds I gained for Christmas!!! |

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED No new toys for me - just got a new road bike last fall and used up all my credits with the family I will go in for a bike fit in a few weeks to get the bike dialed in.
I like to use HR in my workouts - it keeps me honest by making me work harder when the plan calls for it or vice versa slow down so I can recover quicker. |

Thanks to everyone's motivational posts and details of your training, I was able to get most of my planned training in this week, including 4 early mornings! And I forget who it was who posted about going to your swim when it was 39 degrees out, but thank you...on Tuesday of this week I felt guilty because I went to the pool when it was 70 degrees at 7pm (one reason why I love Florida!). However, when I told the coach I'd be there for the Friday 5am session I didn't realize a cold front would be coming through! So there I was this morning, 5am, 41 degrees on the pool deck! The 82 degree water felt great after I warmed up. I was the only one to show at 5, though two people came at 5:30--though one of them changed her mind and wouldn't get in the water! Company in town for the next week will alter my schedule a bit, but my 30 week IM training plan begins the following Monday. I halfway through Don Fink's "Be IronFit" and I really like it. I'm going to try the competitive plan outlined in the book. I have never trained using heart rate zones before, though, so I think I'll struggle a little with that. Any opinions on whether using HR zones for training really makes a difference or not? I'm a bit skeptical. Happy training!
I'm not a fan of HR. I much prefer power for the bike and tested paces for the run. My HR is vastly different from bike to run, beginning workout to end of workout, and even sometimes on different days. I had a conversation last night about my Threshold testing and how wacky my HR was Wednesday on the test. I just can't count on HR to be consistent enough to get good quality workouts. I can use somewhat for loooooong training days when I don't have a powermeter on the bike I'm riding, but not for anything with specific intervals. Sometimes though HR is all you have unless you can shell out the $$ for a powermeter on every bike you own. hmmmmmmmmm! LOL
I had to take my rest day yesterday and switch my swim TT testing to tonight. I don't know what it is, but I just can't get used to the weight training in my program. I'm just absolutely wrecked after weight training, for days! I just don't seem to recover from it like I do S/B/R. I talked to my coach about it, but he just says HTFU. I know I have to trust my coach, but I'm having a hard time believing I'm doing any good if I can't get any quality workouts in. I've only beein doing the weights program a few weeks now, so maybe I just need to give it a little time. I'm also doing the coaches diet which is kinda contributing to my lack of energy right now too, and I'm sure effecting recovery times. He suggested getting some protein powder and a blender and mixing up powder/fruit for a protein drink after weight workouts. IDK. I agree power is better for the higher intensity intervals, my problem is the lag in time it takes to get up to the proper zone vs. the time of the interval. But, for the longest time I made it work simply because it was all I had and I hadn't been doing this long enough to justify the cost. I know, in addition the training your coach has you doing you are also dieting some. Does your diet have enough calories from protein to help with the recovery? I agree with Becky that it does take some time to adopt, but diet can help or hinder this process. I'm not 100% positive. I'm pretty sure it does, but timing may be the issue. I'm going to buy a blender and start mixing up some recovery drinks with fruit and protein powder. We'll give that a try this weekend. |

While you're at your LBS, have them double check the teeth on your chain rings and cassette. Rust can wear down parts. Running joke - would love to get a new carbon bike, by I think I will wait a while. Hate my shifters (they work great but too big for my hands and cable is not intergated). As for new equipment, maybe new road shoes (I'm eyeing on Sidi's) and maybe a new pedal system from Look pedals to speedplay. It is going to be warm (55-65) this weekend, so I have a ride today (trainer), tomorrow and Sunday. |

I'm happy to see the dialouge from everyone. So, Life being what it is, non-stop with family priorites, not much since the marathon last Sunday. Regarding the run, I thought I'd be a lot more sore, but really at two days after I felt great. No issues at all. It's a big diffrence without the added elevation around home during training runs. I'm about ready to start up my own version of a winter maintenance using 2-3 days of Jorge's Winter Program (I now feel cycling is my weakest sport), and had heard some of you folks speak about Trainer Road, any feed back would be appreciated. As far as swimming, that was my weakest sport in the beginning, but since I worked hard the first season and had some lessons, it paid off. My focus for the winter will be 2 days working on better form and return to bilateral breathing. Maybe another lesson or 2. Running goal will be to maintain my LSD with some hill repeats. I seemed to be able to go the distance, now i'd like to bust through hills and speed up a little bit. Regarding training by HR or RPE, can anyone give a real layman's version of RPE for me. I was looking at the BT HIM Beginner program and it's RPE based. I'd really appreciate having any insight in to it. Thanks. |

Veteran 169 Stockton-on-Tees | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED I've always used rate of perceived exertion (rpe) as I don't have a heart rate moniter. At a very basic level, the higher the number the rpe the harder the effort you should be putting in. The downside is that it can be inconsistant and its easy to lie to yourself if you tend to be a bit lazy, like I am. :-) |

As a firefighter I work rotating overnight hours which allows for great availability for training but if I have many late night alarms, i'm toast (burnt even)! so my scheduled run the following morning usually feels like it takes more effort which can impact a percieved RPE determination. I've used my heart monitor and can see when I start creeping above 80% my exertion takes a hit if I go to long (on somedays), but even before I look at it, I can feel it, So I guess thats RPE. Those of you who train this way, how do you deal with how your change in RPE may be effected by outside influences from life, ie. work, lack of sleep, minor illnesses, etc? |

I just ordered the Garmin cadence speed sensor for my bike and already have the ant stick and Garmin monitor, so I'll give it a try. As far as feed back, I'm curious to how user friendly it is; is it as simple as 'keeping it in the green', as they say; does your trainer ride seem to go by faster because of focusing on stats; and most importantly, have you seen favorable results? BTW, have you done Jorges winter plan with it yet? |

The downside is that it can be inconsistant and its easy to lie to yourself if you tend to be a bit lazy, like I am. :-) One of the reasons I like to suggest to newer triathletes that they use a HR monitor is that RPE is difficult to figure out. In your case Jennifer, it is not about being lazy, but some people just don't like or aren't comfortable with the higher effort until they know what it feels like and gets used to it. For others, they go way to hard and wind up incapable of finishing the prescribed training or worse case getting injured. But, once you figure out and gain experience, RPE is a perfectly good training tool. |
