What is your climate like at this time of year? (temp, wind, rain or?)

It's wet and windy. The temperatures have been very mild this year (last couple of days were 7/8/9C) but the winds are just horrendous and it really puts me off riding outside. But all I see when I'm driving is cyclists everywhere... Maybe I'm just on the look out for them.

Welcome John! It does sound like you'll have a busy year!
A 4 hour marathon time is still pretty fast in my books

Welcome John. I agree with Tay your running sounds pretty fast to me. I've only been swimming for just over two years and I find improvements seem to come in small leaps forward. From when I started swimming it took me 6mos. (of 3X/wk) to get to the first day that I could swim 750m non-stop. The trick for me on that particular day was that I slowed down and was pleasantly surprised that I could suddenly go so much further. After that my distance improved quite rapidly and within a month I was swimming 1800m for 3X/wk. You sound like you're doing well in the pool so just keep at it and be patient.

When you can, you should swim in open water as often as possible, to get used to it.

Gary - Maybe you could do a little slow single leg riding, eh. At least you could post a pic of it and give some thought to a name for it.

Tay - 7 to 9C is great temps for running but for cycling I'm a bit of a "fair-weather cyclist". I want it to be 14C (or warmer) and sunny. Unfortunately, it is often windy here so we just have to tough it out. Plus we have a lot of hills in all directions.

I ran this morning - really slow (:12/mile) and this afternoon I went to another cycling session. I'm really tired now. Going to the pool tomorrow for my last workout of February.

Thanks for the thoughts on swimming you all. Looks like maybe I am not actually as unusually slow to progress as I thought. I'll trying adding the pull in the middle of set to extend them - nice idea.
The thought struck me today that since I was never on a swim team and only took swim lessons as a kid I was pretty much literally starting from scratch. Yeah sure I knew how to swim meaning make the strokes but I never trained nor was I ever coached. If I applied that starting point to running or biking it would probably be a similarly slow progression.

At any rate - aiming to break the 1500M mark for a single work out this weekend.

Best,

John

Hi John, and welcome. You've got a background in running I'm very envious of!  I've always been more of a swimmer and only just learned to run 18 months ago, and oddly enough the key for running for me was the same as George's swim epiphany--slow down! I discovered I could go much further, and then gradually built up some speed from there. I'm still slow, but I can carry on for a reasonable distance, and I'm confident as I build condition and strength I'll slowly improve.

So yes--embrace the slow progression and enjoy the little steps .

Just got back from an awesome run in the woods on some local single track. What's everyone else up to this weekend? We have another winter storm bearing down on us so I might get to break out the screw shoes again tomorrow :-).

Raced in a sprint this morning, one of the last few races before the water gets too cold and the season turns to running for the winter. Had a lot of fun, did a little better than last time (now middle-back rather than back of pack), and learned a bit more. End of easy week for me this week. A "short" long run yesterday and a "short" long bike today.

Just read your race report. Great race! Speedy swim considering the current and sighting. Super fast T2 as well.

finally got off my behind and started uploading both my results and my training plan to my training log. Doing OK with the running and biking but need to start going to the Y to start on my swimming.

Still undecided about what to do for a bike. Initially thought I would put a few dollars into my older Trek 750 hybrid since this is my first year and though I would get better idea of what I want after a few races. If I do decide to buy a bike does anyone have any recommendation on where to get a used on online besides e-bay?

Well done! Your swim time is indeed impressive, especially under the circumstances.

My football match got cancelled due to heavy rain - I'm disappointed especially since I only done 1hr on the bike today (saving myself for the match). Oh well, just means I'll have extra energy this week for training.

On a good note: it was dry in the morning and I went out on the bike for a quick spin, done a route I hadn't done in a while and, even though I wasn't that much faster overall since I wasn't pushing to be, the hills felt soooooooo much easier than I remembered them. Actually I even had one gear left by the time I got to the top of the final hill coming towards my house (I normally would have had no gears left half way up it).
So I went on my Garmin activities and seen that this time last year I was averaging the same speed but on flat! So there is hope for me
Going to start uploading my garmin again rather than just record the distance/time in here.

You could try Craig's list or your local tri club.

Congrats on the bike improvement, it feels great to suddenly realise all the training is paying off. From time to time I go and have a look at my BT logs from a year ago, it makes me realise just how far I have come

My bike is here. Had to do a little assembly and took it for a spin. VERY different than the old hybrid. Will take some getting used to, but I was flying down the street. Getting the hang of the pedals/clips. Almost had my first spill, but I caught my self!

Attaching the picture because I have not figured out how to past a photo in.

I like the new ride, looks sweet! Getting a new bike is great, we should all do it more often. Remember the rule, the number of bikes you need is always n+1.

Must be a massive change from a hybrid, moving to a set of aero bars and a steep seat post...

I got asked to fill-in for a mates Corporate triathlon team at the last minute. I've been sick for three weeks so a flat out sprint tri was a shock to the system. 54 minutes of pain and suffering (but I loved it). And I went last in our team so I got to run through the finish line!

My running was OK buts its fair to say I've lost a bit of bike strength in the last month...

Hey all,

For any bike fit geeks out there you should try the app "Bike Fast Fit". Its not cheap but I think its cool.

I used to photograph myself on the bike (on a trainer), print out the photo and draw lines on it. I'd then measure my angles manually (knee angle, effective seat tube, hip angle etc). This app does it for you once you recorded your video through the app. You can then e-mail around your fit report (i.e. to your coach if you have one, I don't) and keep a record of your position on the bike.

Just thought I'd mention it since we have a new bike owner in the group...

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks for the props on the new bike. No name yet. Not at least until she gets taken out for the maiden voyage!

I had a professional fitting at the point of sale, but the aero bars may need some adjustment. Thanks for the app idea.

Here are the February stats. New top dog on hours - congrats Tatous. Trial_Of_Miles still miles ahead in the pool and doing great on the bike. GregDufour takes the lead in the running lane! There are some serious numbers being put up this month. Great work. I tried to be very careful with the data entry -- our friends on the metric system will notice I converted to yards/miles. Enjoy.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
