Water temp is not my top worry anymore.  This last weekend I did my first OWS in my full wetsuit, and the lake temp was 57, I was buring up after 30 min.  What worries me is the wind.  Half way through the swim the wind picked up to only 15 mph and it was pushed me all over the lake.  The last half mile was one of the hardest swims I have ever done.

For those of you who have ridden the course: if there is a headwind all the way out of Veyo, can we at least expect some kind of tail wind to push us up some hills? I'm getting the impression that it's headwind both ways.

Do we get a break anywhere on the course?

I have a great solution Joe -- open up the neckline and let some water in. With water temps under 60 degrees, that will cool you right on down!

gcirongirl - 2010-04-10 11:31 AM I need some advice. I have been struggling with my training. In November, I sprained my left ankle. I think that I started back training too soon because I almost immediately ended up with peroneal tendonitis in my right ankle in January. That has healed and I was nervous about my low training volume and so was going to hit things pretty hard in March and the first part of April and had managed to get to about 60 miles on the bike and 14 miles on the run when 10 days ago I fell down the stairs and re-sprained my left ankle. The doctor says that my ankle will likely be almost 100% by race day. If I had been at full training, I don't think that this would be a problem. I would just count it as an extra long taper and struggle through the race. So, here's the question. Do I still race? I have been gearing upfor this since I signed up the day that registration opened. Everything has been focused on May 1, 2010. Do you think that with this low amount of training, I could still get through this race? Maybe I should just do a half later in the summer? Thoughts? I am really agonizing over this. I have NEVER quit a race.

What is the harm in giving it a go?  Unless you are still in a lot of pain, go out there, give it all you have that day!  If you make it FANTASTIC!  If not, at least you would know.  I do not think I could handle the 'what-ifs' of not at least trying.  Sorry about your injury.

x2.  Toe the line and see what happens.  If you don't, you'll always be wondering, "what if?"  I suspect that if you give it a go, you'll sleep well that night, regardless of the outcome.

I started my ride on Saturday at Sand Hollow at about 8:15am, so a little earlier than I will on race day. There was really no wind at all until Veyo, to be honest. I've ridden the course three times now, and only encountered wind after the turn at Veyo (gas station) and head back towards St. George. That seems to be the norm, imo.

It could be windy anywhere on race day, obviously. The first leg, from San Hollow up to where the 1st loop starts (about 22 miles) is fairly exposed, so we could get some wind in places. From the beginning of the first loop until Veyo (25 miles?) is open for a while through Ivens, but then you get into a narrow canyon up to Gunlock reservoir and beyond. I'm sure the wind can howl down there at times, but it's kind of sheltered by the cliffs and mountainsides there a bit, so I've never really felt any there. Not to say others haven't, but it's never been an issue when I've been riding there. The Veyo to St. George bit is the toughie, but at least we'll all suffer together. :-)

You know, with canyon winds it always could be!

Seriously, I just plan on racing -- damn the conditions. If I have a 20 mph headwind from 7 a.m. until midnight, I will still eventually make forward progress. I have ridden in some of the stiffest wind out on the course and it makes things tougher, but they are definitely manageable.

Should be a blast!

Amen to that.

Although I think people will be surprised with how challenging the bike is, I'm not worried about that. It's really the run that scares the crap out of me. There will be a LOT of us walking, I'm sure.

Yes.   About 100 feet before you hand your bike off, it gets real flat.

Sorry - couldn't resist.

What a weekend.  Even with all my family commitments, I managed to run 2:20hrs on Saturday and brick 6:20hrs/30mins on Sunday.  The only thing is that I did half the training in the morning and half in the afternoon on both, but hey I did it...

Next weekend is 2:00hrs run on Saturday and brick 5:30hr/30mins on Sunday and I'm done!

Hello and good morning to all you current and future Ironman triathletes!!

My name is Sue Jones and I am a direct representative of the M Dot corporation. The reason I’m writing to you today is that we have been monitoring this forum (as well as other websites) and based on the contents have decided to make some exciting changes for the inaugural St George Ironman race. This is directly related to your input and we hope that all will be happy with our efforts.

SWIM- After much debate over the subject it has come to our attention that most competitors feel that being required to swim in mid 50 degree water is not desirable or fair. As a result of this we have already started the process of warming the water and hope that by race day it will be at 79.9 degrees. We have also made some small rule changes and will be allowing the usage of flotation devices and have supplied a few SeaDoos to tow a couple of large inflatable yellow bananas around for those who find the swim to be too much effort. The swim will of course be optional on the whole and we are now opening sign ups for anyone who would rather spend the 1-2 hrs playing ring pick up, water volleyball, or the every popular Marco Polo (based on the forums we expect these will fill up rather quickly so sign up right away).

BIKE- In all honesty this course was thrown together rather quickly and we simply didn’t realize how many crazy hills it had on it! For that we apologize and have made the following adjustments. All athletes will ONLY be required to ride through designated “Crowd Viewing Areas” these areas will be limited to 200 yards in length and we will be supplying shuttles at the end of each area to transport you and your bike to the beginning of the next “Crowd Viewing Area”. We understand that this will leave large gaps of unaccounted time in your race day, so we have hired several bands to help pass away the time in the athlete only areas!!!

RUN- Lets face it 26.2 miles is a long way to run while not being chased, and asking you to do that after a tuff morning of Marco Polo and carting you on and off shuttle busses hardly seems fair, but add in hills?!?! That’s just plain mean!! So we have decided to cover the run course with conveyer belts to ensure that all will be able to complete the fun day with a smile!!

Now with these new changes we are aware that we will undoubtedly not be able to make everyone happy, but we feel based on this and other forums that this race was simply to hard for us to fairly call an Ironman. Please be aware of your other competitors and keep these changes to yourself. Let’s face it many of the athletes have built a lot of their self worth and ego based on how “hard” this race was when compared to others. Not that the swim could come close to Alcatraz, or the bike anywhere near Savage man, or the run even close to Kona, but compared to Arizona and Florida this race was a MONSTER!

If we have missed anything or you have any further questions please feel free to email me at

[email protected]

Otherwise enjoy the race and we will see you at the finish line!!!

I love it!!!  However, it will be tougher than most IM races.  (Not just AZ and FL) That is why I wanted to do it!!!!  Bring it all on.  If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Dear Sue,

I've trained long and hard for this thing...the last thing I want is for the experience to not be authentic.  As such, I assume there will be makeup artists there to spritz us with fake sweat, dirt and strategically smear GU and Gatorade all over our gear so it LOOKS real.  Please let me know if those services will be available, or if we should plan for that in our Special Needs bags.

This is a very valid issue and I thank you for bringing it up. Due to economic times we will not be able to provide professional make up artist on race day, although we will be offering a free seminar at the expo on Thursday and Friday for make up application. (You didn't hear it from me, but Avon might have some free samples in your goody bag at packet pick up!)

We can't control the conditions but we can control our race .   I hate cold water though.  I'm still on the fence of getting a neoprene cap or just doubling up swim caps.

Now that taper is on, I am going through my equipment checklists. I have almost no cold or wet weather gear so i am starting there, just in case. Anyone planning on using a neoprene cap or socks? If so, any feedback about them would be great, especially the socks.
