carrie639 - 2010-06-08 7:47 AM I haven't decided yet.  Either the Naperville sprint tri of the Bangs Lake aquabike (which was my first race every last year).

Is that August Naperville tri that same as the one I am doing this weekend?  Centennial beach, flat and fast run and bike?

Yes, I am pretty sure it is the same exact course.

What is this "flat and fast" of which you speak?  That is a concept unknown to me.

(Seriously, I need to take some pics of some of the climbs on my long bike route so you guys can see.  Let's just say I consider the Tupepr Lake Tinman course EASIER.

scotty930 - 2010-06-07 8:14 PM Quick question. I need to buy some spare tubes for my tires. I currently have been using the Continental race 28. I was just wondering what everybody uses for their tubes?

Whatever's cheapest at the LBS.  I don't have a set brand or anything.

carrie639 - 2010-06-08 5:53 AM So I heard on the radio this morning (not that it means anything at this point) that it may be in the 90's this weekend . . . arrrggghhh, for my first race.  The last couple of weekends I have done 5k's it has been in 78-80 degress and very humid, so to me felt very hot.

What adjustments would you guys make/recommend if it is supposed to be hotter than anticipated?  I am NOT a good heat runner at all.  The hotter I get the worse I do.  I don't want to have to walk, that would really upset me . . .

Carrie, I echo what Bri says.  Heat will have an impact on your pace.  Realizing that and using a good hydration strategy during the race is key.  Also key is making sure you are WELL hydrated before the race.  Suck it down in the days leading up to the race like you've never done before.  You will lose a lot of fluids during the race--you don't want to go into the race in a hydration deficit.

Good luck!  You'll do great!

Yup, hydrate early and often.  A sports drink is highly recommended if you are sweating alot.

I have a sprint on June 27.  THat's the end of week 9 for me on the HIM plan.   It's a couple weeks earlier than the plan wanted but best I could fit in since I am avoiding the pool swim races to get my OWS head together.

Week 9 looks like this:
Mon....long hills  5x5 min climbs,   1:15 total
Tues ...swim  2275 yards/ run lactte intervals  38 min total  run (13 x30 lactate)
Wed......foundation bike 90 min
THurs.....swim 2100 yards/ run 50 min w/ striders
Fri......might have an ows practice, not sure
Sat......long ride 2 hrs 45 min
Sun....SPRINT

I am thinking the plan needs to be readjusted some.  Probably going to cut the duration of all the workouts by 1/3?  Does that sound about right to get a mini taper in?

What is your goal of that race? Is it an A, B, or C race? If your training through the race, I would just move your long ride earlier in the week, try and keep everything the same, and just do something easy, like 30 minute recovery ride the day before the race. If you are  treating it more like a race where you want to do well, then I would figure out which works outs are most important to you to accomplish that week, one of each, keep those the same and cut the rest  by 1/4 to 1/3 depending on how much of a taper you want. Hopefully you get some kind of idea from this.

This is my favorite of the local races.  It's the best course of any of them.  Just want to actually "do" good.  Meaning, get through the OWS without resorting to backstroke cause of my many OWS issues (yeah, why did I sign up for HIM with this issue?
The bike route is Killer, the hill work I am doing prior to the race will be much needed for the course.
Run is my favorite one cause it's almost 80% trail running and a blast--even though it's the craziest run course I have ever seen!
Guess if I had to look at A/B/C category I would call it a B race cause I am putting the majority of my focus into the HIM plan and that goal is still to finish under 7 hrs.

When we do training races during the season (non-A race)  we have a light week before the race.  This is what we're doing this week.  The coach says your not going to gain any fitness in one week, but you don't want to be stale.  We swim our normal swimd on Monday and Wednesday, Ride on Tues is short 1 mile ride and 1/2 mile run (repeated 3 times) practicing transitions, and some short sprints running Thursday, Friday light swim. Race Sat.  Seems to work fine for the team.

OK my team has selected IM CDA for 2011 as a team race.  I've been planning on an IM in 2011 but this one is pretty early (Late june).  Sign up is June 28 so I need to decide.  Doing the team race help make the schedule match the teams and having several team in the same schedule to have team members for long rides and runs.

I've been told by several folks that doing an IM branded race for your first is a good way to go.  I like winter training and the idea of being done before July since summer training in Va is so hot.  I have my 1st marathon scheduled for this fall so it looks like it is doable.  I'm still a rookie at this sport so I'm not looking for than finish without injury and fair margin from the deadline.

Any feedback from you folks?

So, today I hit a milestone in my life and turn 40.  Lots of people fear the dreaded "40", but I embrace it.  After all, thanks to the lifestyle I have had over the past 5 years, I don't feel 40.  I am probably in better shape now than I was at 30.  Regardless of whether you do sprints, olympics, half ironmans or the full Ironman, embrace the healthy lifestyle and live life to the fullest.

Congratulations and Happy Birthday!  I have no doubt you're entering the best decade of your life thus far.

I remember 40...and I embraced it as well.  That's definitely the way to go.  No sense in fighting it when the alternatives are rather bleak.  And no doubt, you are in better shape today than you were ten years ago from this sport.  So many positives come from this.

Congratulations again!

Scotty- I do the same as Neal... Whatever's the cheapest the LBS.

Carrie-  I agree with what others had to say about the heat... Just stay hydrated (sports drink to keep up my electrolytes) and slow it down.  I usually train & race w/a heart rate monitor so I just focus on keeping in the right zone, knowing that it'll most likely be at a slower pace.

Judi- For a B-race, I tend to just skip the last few workouts before the race; for example if I'm doing a Sunday race, I do my planned workouts Mon-Weds, do an easier workouts on Thursday (like a swim or easy bike or run), then take Friday and Saturday off of formal training (maybe I'll do some walking, yoga, or throw in a really easy workout etc).  So given the schedule you gave, I might keep Mon & Tues the same and move the long bike ride to Weds.  For Thursday, I might just pick one or the other of those two workouts, or maybe cut the swim short and keep the run easy.  Then I would probably skip the rest of it.

Jack- From what I can tell, you should be able to do it!  You already have a good HIM base, and from what I can tell, a year is plenty of time for ironman training given your base.  Of course, I've never done an IM or even a HIM before so I'm just speaking on what I see from others that I know who are currently training for IM's.  Nice Hawaii pic!

Briana- Happy Birthday!  I know many sooooo strong triathletes in their 40's and beyond, so if this is what we have to look forward to as we age, I'm really not at all worried!

Endurance sports are the fountain of youth!  I will be 52 in July and in the best shape of my life!  My first swim lesson was just prior to my 48th birthday and I did IM WI at 50.

Happy Birthday, the best is yet to come!

Repost for those of you who didn't see it.  What tri shorts and bike shorts do you wear?  Why do you like them?

Thanks!

Ah, I didn't see this the first time around!

I have a pair of Pearl Izumi bike shorts & tri shorts, as well as a skirt sport tri shorts.  I also used to have a Descente tri shorts.

I really like both my Pearl Izumi shorts (I also have a pair of their run shorts that I also like).  They're comfortable and have never given me problems.  I used the bike shorts on my 75 mile ride this weekend, and they were great!  I've used the tri shorts on various swims & runs (up to 8 miles) with no issues.  Though, I think the tri shorts run small.... My run shorts and bike shorts are both smalls, but I had to go with medium for the tri shorts.

The skirt sports tri shorts were the only pair of tri shorts I owned last year (I got my other stuff at end-of-season sales) and they've served me well!  I was only doing shorter distances last year, and they were fine for that.  I should find where they are and try them out for my longer workouts now that I'm doing them.

I only used my Descente shorts once, but then got into a minor bike accident involving 2 other cyclists (at a stop light, the guy in front of me stopped suddenly w/o warning, we bumped wheels, I fell over, and the guy behind me just about ran over my butt).  The shorts ripped and i had to ride the rest of the way home with my butt hanging out of my shorts.  Lovely.  Obviously those were extenuating circumstances, but the material just seems like it should withstand a little more than just a little wheel tap!  Whatever, I will never buy another pair of Descente shorts again.

If possible try and move the long ride earlier in the week.  Scale back the workouts on Friday and Saturday for sure, and possibly Thursday depending on how you're feeling.  That's how I've approached my 2 sprints this year.

That sounds very doable.  I'm not sure how far out you'll start your IM training plan, but if you can get a few weeks of quality rest after the fall mary I think that would help before you start the long build.
