Its amazing how train affects the BP and cholesterol.  The thought of taking one less med is exciting.  I saw an endocrinologist for the first time on Tuesday.  My BP was 100/60, way low, especially for me and he wants me to stop my BP immediately!  I am a little nervous though because this doc did not seem to believe me when I told him I was 70lbs heavier and my BP was so high at one point they wanted to put me in the hospital.  He said I was not his typical patient!

Like I have said before, since starting my training two years ago, I have not lost a pound!  But there have been so many other positive changes mentally, physically and emotionally that it has all been worth it!

Congrats. I know it is scary coming off meds. I am on blood thinners and scared to get off them. Trusting doctors is tough too. Follow your gut, but 100/60 is low for sure.

Stepped out of my little box way early this morning.  I was on the road at 5:10am and headed to work.  I used the pool at the University instead of my safe pool on base and did my swim.  Ran out of time to complete all 20 x 75s but had a descent training session.  Headed back to the gym here at work for my long run and then headed home...should be home by 10:00pm...the drive and OT make it hard but it is doable!

holy long day batman. Great job.

The Tri (my second) will take place the second week of May - so I have about 93 days to train. I'm going to do the sprint and then I have signed up for an Oly in July.

My kid is at home sick so I've spent the morning reviewing my yearly goals.  I just found a Century ride that is sponsored by Harpoon that ends at the brewery (Thor - pretty good bet they wouldn't run out!) - but its 4 hours away... I'm gonna sign up if I don't find another ride that combines biking and beer.

When/where is your first tri?

Gotta love participating in an athletic event that ends at a brewery!

The race is on May 13 and it will be in Hopkinton MA - about 5 miles from my house.  It's so close I'm actually considering biking there and back...

As far as ending a race with a beer in hand... I exercise to drink beer so riding in a race that finishes at a brewery just makes sense.  You must know - how good was that beer when you finished your HM?

I biked to my first tri, a sprint. It was about 5k away. Sure beats packing your bike into a car and dealing with parking. Although I do admit I was happy to have someone drive me and my bike home. Something to consider.

I started with this group at the beginning of Jan. weighing 203.  I'm now down to 185.9!  I just took 1.5 minutes off of an 8.25 mile run.  I'm over a month ahead of where I was last year going into the same race.  Feeling pretty good right about now.

That is an awesome job. Wow. Running and weight loss, you rule!

k, I am back.

After a killer January has been a slow February for me. Not super proud. I think my goal is going to be to slow down. Try to keep my mileage above 100k a week. Not worry about killing every run but just go easy. That is tough though when the difference between easy and hard on a long run is 30 minutes. I just wanna get it over sometimes. Anyways, so yeah. Getting back to running easy.

Had a day and a half off (didn't run Wednesday and only 5k today) so feeling pretty good. Going for a slow long run tomorrow.

Ordered a new mp3 player today. The sansa clip plus. Had one for 2 years before it broke. I have gone through 4 in the past year now, all cheapo models. Anyways, on sale for 30 bucks so picked one up. 2 years for 30 bucks not so bad.

Enjoy your Friday everyone!

Swam a time trial this morning. Goal was to swim 1000 yards in under 15 minutes, under a 1:30 pace. Swam it in just over 15 minutes. Ended up with a 1:32 pace. So not to bad, but I can't help comparing it to several years ago when I could easily swim it in under 12 minutes. I'll get back there.Going to save the planned bike for tomorrow. sunday is bike and run, if my calf recovers by then. It's been really hurting since yesterdays run. It doesn't feel tight it just hurts when I put a lot of pressure on it.

WOW!  I swam my 500 in 11:40 this morning, You're fast. As a newbie swimmer, I cannot even imagine what I need to do to swim like that.

Suggestion for the calf, roll it out on a roller or raquet ball, and stretch often.  Don't try to "run through it too much."

That's amazing and so inspirational!  A couple of years back - my Dr. wanted me on BP meds and I told him that I don't like meds and that I preferred to exercise as a way of controlling my cholesterol and BP.  While I never really "got on the wagon" your story shows me how beneficial it is to maintain a healthy weight and exercise regime!

Kudos to you and thanks for the inspiration!

David-  I have yet to imbibe after any of my events yet, but do believe after I meet my goal in May, I will enjoy a malted style barley pop.

2 Deschutes mirror pond pale ale's tonight to celebrate the 185 milestone.

Congrats once again on the 185 milestone!  Those beers (I've never tried them - where are they made?) must have tasted good!  I hit my goal for the week but need to have one more good week to reach my goal.  My reward - I get to keg the beer I made 6 weeks ago.  It's been lagering and its gonna be awesome.  I took my favorite IPA recipe - Two Hearted Ale from Bells - and used Lager Yeast.  It's my goal next Friday to watch the Budweiser Shootout with some great beer instead of the drivel endorsed by the sponsors...

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the suggestion.  That gives me a good excuse to ask my wife and kids to come cheer me on (more cowbell!).  They've never seen me do a race (when I was running back in the day) or when I was doing a du or tri.  Might be kind of cool to run the last mile with my kids!  Have a great weekend!

I love reading your posts.  Sounds like your strongest sport is swimming and it's so impressive to ready how far and how quickly you can go.  So, I know those two seconds (1:32 instead of 1:30) weren't what you but that's still a respectible time.  And you're right - you will get there!

Here's a suggestion for what it's worth - take it easy this weekend.  With your calf hurting (not sure but my guess is that you might have tweaked a muscle if the pain is mid calf), you want to make sure you don't hurt it more.  Go for a ride - but be sure to stretch it lightly after you have warmed up.  However, I might think about skipping the run and using the time to ice and rest your calf.  You could also do some aqua jogging in the pool. Hope you heal quickly!

Morning Everyone: Here is the Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Good: I got on the scale today and managed to drop another 3 pounds for a total loss of 35.6.  My goal is to drop 5.5 more pounds to meet my goal of hitting 41 pounds lost by my 41 birthday.

The Bad: I went to the doctor to have him check out my aches and pains.  I've got pretty good cases of plantar fasciitis in both feet, bursitis in both my feet and my left hip, and an inflamed ITB in my left leg...  Not as sore as I was on Tuesday - but it's clear that I have overdone the exercise - even though I thought I was taking it easy!

The Ugly: He prescribed 8 sessions of PT but I discovered that PT isn't covered any longer by my insurance policy.  I now have to meet my $1000 deductible before they are covered with $35 co-pays.  Ugh... Frustrating.  While we have some money in a flexible spending account for emergencies - I will need to try to find someone to treat me for the time being for less money.  We have a Athletic Trainer at my school and maybe I can pay him a reduced fee to get over the hump.  Any advice.

My plan for the weekend is to do some biking on Saturday and take a short walk and ice bath on Sunday.

Have a great weekend everyone!

there is nothing better then seeing your family throughout the race. My 9 year old son did his first tri last year. Very proud. The next day the whole family ran the last 100 yards with me to the finish line! For all the weight loss and fitness involved in triathlon, this is my inspiration to continue when I am at my lowest!

The Good:  Your weight loss is Awesome.

The Bad:  Your probably right, you need to REST!  Take it easy.  I've never been injured except when I joined the service 15 years ago after training for college wrestling.  We did a half marathon to get on the wrestling team, and my achiles (sp) was never the same.  fast forward six months after basic training, and it was way worse.  I overused it.  Because I was in good shape, and young, I always ran our runs hard.  It only got better after I lowered my volume for considerable amounts of time.  Months.  It sounds like your injuries are overuse type injuries that require rest and reduced mileage.

The Ugly:  WTH is insurance for anymore anyway?  As premiums go up, services go down.  What a racket.  Hope it works out for you to find an alternative way to get some help.

Deschutes brewery is out of oregon.  We have a lot of great brewery's in Washington, Oregon, and California that are stocked at our local grocier's.  Beyond that, I never get anything further away than Montana, unless I go to a Specialty store and spend some $'s.  That IPA your brewing sounds mighty tasty.  Stay thirsty.

X2

My wife and kids and extended family and friends have joined me at the finish of 4 out of 5 of my marathon's.  It's a very exciting feeling to round the corner and see your family cheering you on.  The time I was out of town, I had my lowest of all my run's, and no family at the end, it wasn't the same.  I never ask them to come down, but they do it of their own, and that gives me alot of encouragement their at the end.

Hello All-

Off day for me today.  I got to sleep in till 7:30!  I got on the scale and it read 181.6.  So much for 185 by the end of february.  I have been trying to lose no more than a pound a week, but am wondering if I'm taking enough fuel in to compensate for the extra mileage.  I will make sure to have a second helping of breakfast this morning.  We're all getting together with family and having a pot luck breakfast this morning.

I swam yesterday.  Sometime swimming can be a challenge when you are not seeing as much improvement in it.  I did a Sprint workout on the treadmill after.  That's where it's at.  1:30 wu. followed by :30 second sprint interval at 11mph, followed by 1:30 at rest pace.  repeat 8x.

Long run tomorrow.  13.6 miler.  Long and slow for me.

Have a great and Safe weekend.  Who's got a race coming up?

For those with injuries I can relate. I was off all of 2010 with a foot injury. And half of 2011 with periformis syndrome....this is the one threatening to come back each time I run. The past four days I've been sick with a wicked cold that my husband gave me, thanks, he had it for almost 2 weeks. I'm really hoping mine doesn't last that long. I rarely catch the bugs that go around but with all the stress I've been under this winter I'm not surprized.

I agree with the easy ride, personally I think it is a cure for just about any problems you have in your legs. I think especially with your foot flexxing up and down that it helps the calves. But you gotta take it easy.

For me, swimming would never work, I am too tight in the water. But I can see that if you were all loose how it would be ideal.

Congrats on the weight loss. The bit with the injury and insurance sucks for sure though. I have never been to PT. I have no idea what people do there. I mean unless someone is rubbing me down I can go through a routine fine myself. Try these excercises.

Not sure about bursitus. Not sure if you can do those excercises with that. But you can so kick PF. It is boring and takes time but if you do those excercises for 20-30 min a night for 6 months or so I would be surprised if your symtoms were almost gone.

Who's got a race coming up?

ahhhhhh, what a problem, losing weight too fast. Keep it up!
