Hi Jamie

 How you be?

Hi Kate... I'm doing really well... life is good, spending lotsa time with my little girls... have a new lady friend who treats me great and I even started tri training again... now if I could only be working a little more often life would be about perfect...

How have you been?  I am totally out of the TAN loop these days... other than Tony is still a bad driver and Cord is still a DB...

That is great to hear.  It's nice to see things going your way!

Me I am haning in there trying not to lose my mind.

TAN is TAN not much ever changes, just different avenues of approach.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the least... wait... thats not right...

Yeah I'm thinking things would be easier that way!

So my follow up with my surgeon confirmed my Meniscus was too damaged to repair. So they had to cut out a good chunk of my meniscus on the interior part of my right knee. I was told to never run again.

I am wondering if that is true or just the typical answer.

Did they not use an artificial meniscus to repair the damage?

Or an allograft for that matter?

No Repair I am in Canada. They will not cover that in our health care and it really isn't an option. The upside of free health care

I was told maybe if I was a pro athlete so all they do is cut out the tear to remove the pain I was in. It was torn and folded over causing the pain. Along with a bone fragment that was removed.

They didn't with mine. But it was 18 years ago.

Maybe that's a difference between Canadian Health Care and 'Murican Health Care.  In Canada, they tell you "never run again, so we don't have to cut you up again!"  In Murica, they say "OK, all done.  Should we get you on a treadmill tomorrow or maybe throw you out of a plane?"

I wasn't told to not run again.  My sister just had her meniscus cut and she wasn't told not to run (she told the Dr she wants to run HIM Honu in 2014 and he said "Oh sure, you should be good for that timeline.").

I guess just do what you can.  Definitely strengthen your quads, glutes, calves, etc. so you have something supporting your knee when you run.

Yeah save up, come to FL and get it done!

That is flippin' rediculous but it will be the US in another 10 Years or so as well.

So basically yeah they mean no running!  You are bone on bone without a meniscus and bone degrades much more easily under pressure than cartilage.  You have those bumpers for a very good reason.

I'm just speaking for my knee.  It was a pretty bad tear.  It had locked in-place.  The Doc took a chunk of the cartilage, but said if I had strong quads, glutes, etc etc I should be able to run, wrestle, play football, serve in the Corps, etc.

So far so good.

I am to understand it was a significant tear that was folded under. I from the brief review with the Doc yesterday they removed a lot of it but not all of it. And he told me arthritis would be inevitable.

I told him I did triathlons he said he had a similar amount removed and within 2 years he stopped doing triathlons and stopped running because of the pain. Told me to stick to cycling and if I try to run be aware patellar tendonitis may set in because the knee will track different and I will be bone on bone causing a bigger issue down the road.

I am guessing that they always tell you not to run here

Was he fat?

Serious question. Or was he an athletic looking guy?

My doctor before the current one was way overweight and seemed to have no idea how to tell someone "you need to lose weight."

Actual conversation one time when I was in really good shape:

He said "do you do any exercise?"

I said "uh yeah, I run triathlons and marathons."

He said "well as you get older, maybe you should look at doing stuff like walking, taking the stairs, etc.  You're not going to stay young forever."

I left that office and asked one of my training partners, 71 year old 32 time Ironman what doctor he goes to...

Some Drs are real putzes no matter where they are.

Oh, on the repair/arthritis stuff... My doctor said they're developing a gu that they can squirt in joints like knees and hips and stuff that will be like a viscous cartilaginous stuff of some kind.  I'll look it up on the googles.  Supposedly, that's how they'll deal with no cartilage knees like you and me.

Thats a set bad man... I say do LOTS of rehab and get strong and see how you feel.  I wouldnt write off tri's just yet.  Maybe worst case you have to stick with cycling and swimming this year... not so bad, if you wanna do a relay... I'm not far away and would could fit a run only event or two in this year... :-)

I am hoping for the best. I have fairly strong legs and quads I am built like a short Tank more then I am a think athletic runner anyways. So I hope to keep doing Sprint distance stuff I will just go easy on the run training side of it.  And no Half Marathons. Only time will tell.

I might take you up on the Relay and I have options down here. My buddy in Sarnia that I scuba dive with just bought a bike and is taking up triathlons this year. So I plan on heading up that way for some longer rides this summer. We should hook up.

Gah, I hate this place.  Just got called out on my hours last week.  We are busy so needed to put in some OT (AND I don't get paid for it, so it's really no big deal to them) but they said I was leaving at 5 but I said I was working through my lunch hour.  They said they could get in big trouble for that and no one said I had to work through my lunch hour.

No, no one SAID I did, but we have a lot of work, and I chose to get my time in at lunch instead of early or late.  Not sure what the difference is.  No one SAID I have to stay late either.

Why can't they be happy I'm doing what it take to get the job done instead of get called out like I'm cheating or doing something wrong?

Actually it's because they can get in a lot of trouble if someone thinks they force their employees to work through lunch.  One place I worked anythime we did not take at least a half hour lunch we had to sign a waiver that it was our choice.

Thats a set bad man... I say do LOTS of rehab and get strong and see how you feel.  I wouldnt write off tri's just yet.  Maybe worst case you have to stick with cycling and swimming this year... not so bad, if you wanna do a relay... I'm not far away and would could fit a run only event or two in this year... :-)

+1 to this.  A coworker just had meniscus surgery several months ago, and has just recently started tri training for his first Sprint.  Strengthen it all up and see what you can tolerate.

That coworker is also currently looking into some stem cell treatments that may allow him to regrow new cartilage.... though, I wouldn't put too much hope in that.

I understand it's the law.  OSHA says you can't be at your desk for more than 4 hours at a time.

It's just convenient for them considering they have occasionally ask me to stay in the office for lunch to man the phones since eveyone else was going out.  So which is it?  Lunch or not lunch?

I'm just mad because the made lunch the issue when the issue is, they (the company) is obviously in a panic about running out of money and don't like the overtime I put down BUT we have the deadlines.  So are hastleing me about putting down the hours because they don't want to pay for them (last pay period included the holiday so I used a couple hours less PTO)

What they want, without saying it, is for me to use my PTO, not charge the 9 hour days, but still do 9  hours of work.  If that makes sense.  So they are torn between getting the work done and running out of money.

I can't wait for them to ask me to man the phones at "lunch" again.
