Champion 11989 Philly 'burbs | Subject: RE: TAN #197: We CAN be polite, TANk u very much! tech_geezer - 2013-03-27 4:01 PM I think I solved a big part of my wheel truing problem today. I figured out the solution to the rim bending problem. I had to take the Euler Bernoulli equations for a straight beam and convert it to a circular beam. This was the hard part. It turns out to be very simple. I would have expected that someone had solved it before but I couldn't find it. I will put the solution on my blog savetheneurons.blogspot.com when I get it typed up. I am working on the spoke model now. The equations for the spoke tension are easy. The vector math to apply the load in the correct direction is tedious but not hard. It is just a lot of trig. The last step is hooking the two parts together and putting it in the form of a vector equation. From that point on, it is computer programming. The actual calculation of the number of spoke turns to bring the rim into true looks like it will be a simple least squares minimization. It was a good birthday. um..... bewbs. |

Never considered dish. Doh! The guy at the LBS who fixed it for me said I did a decent job for an amateur. The reason I am trying to figure this out is to help amateurs like me build a true, equally tensioned wheel. I don't have the experience to know how much to turn each spoke to fix a deflection and equalize the tension. A pro develops an "algorithm" by experience. I am trying to replace wheel building experience with math, engineering, and computer programming. Time will tell if it actually is helpful. It's just a fun problem right now. I figure I will make it into an iphone app and sell copies to all the rookies who wants to true their own wheels (only partly joking). I will be rich! (now I'm joking.) An app would be a good way to distribute the algorithm so that it does not depend on having other software. |

That is what the corn field is for. We actually jumped off the RAGBRAI route to go to field of dreams. Along with about 1000 others. Yes there were many walking into the corn fields. Too bad the people from Florida kept walking into the bean fields and wondering why they could be seen. :-) |

An app would be a good way to distribute the algorithm so that it does not depend on having other software. I'm skeptical. I agree it should be do-able, but it wouldn't work with used hubs (rebuilds) as the holes elongate under use. Spokes aren't uniform in the threaded depths and some have longer and shorter threaded portions. Threads have different resistances to turning, hence, some will wind up along the central axis and others won't. You also need to stress relieve periodically through the tensioning process by pushing down on the rim while the hub is on the floor. Flip the wheel over and relieve the other side. Even machine built wheels manufactured at QBP are hand finished. They're also inferior to a true hand build dne by feel. It'll come down to feel in the end. |

I am sure there were many others doing the same thing, it was amazing how many cornfields were used during RAGBRAI for multiple uses, when some of the distances between towns is only 7 miles. |
