Ken - I am so glad your Dad is ok, that must have been really scary.

PF sucks - I wish I could tell everyone the magic cure - but w/ my recent flare up I am not sure one exists. Actually foot is feeling better today, went to yoga for the first time in a long time and will try and go at least once a week while I am marathon training to keep things looser.

I think Ken might need to rename this group - we're down but not out!!

Glad to hear everyone had a successful weekend racing or otherwise.

Mid week long run this morning.  14 miles through some rolling hills.

How is everyone's training going this week?

You might want to throw in some aqua jogging too.  Helps with run conditioning without risk of injury.

IDK....he may be on to something. I need to stop posting till I have something positive to say! LOL

Weight training last night. We started back up with that last week when I knew I wouldn't be racing. Some of the stuff is REALLY tough. Like 50 burpees about kills me! and I can't do them in succession yet! LOL But started getting easier this week. We are really focussing on strength in attempt to heal and prevent injury going forward. It's really nice to be able to do something in front of the tv at home! I'll start focussing on some swimming too when my allergies settle down some. In the meantime, I'd rather not aggrevate my sinus issues when I won't have to race for a while anyhow. Plenty of time for that!

Got an easy bike tonight. My legs will welcome the flushing after some hard bikes and weights since Saturday.

The strength training is a good idea under the circumstances.  Burpees should be outlawed! Embarassed

I added another race to the schedule.  Going to do the Tinman HIM in Tupper Lake on the 29th.  I had a friend doing it and so I invited myself along.  Should be a good time!

It was a touch chilly this morning but sunny & windy. It felt more like a late May run than mid June run.

Get ready! Severe storms rolling through Chicago here today. It started to get hot and humid. Storms will probably disipate by the time they get to you but you'll probably see some hot humid and windy weather soon

Been absent recently... hard to keep up sometimes... My wife has been on me to get some major projects finished around the house so I am going to focus on them which will reduce training time. I did join our local group ride yesterday for a fast 40 miles. Not running much right now, but will try to get a long run in this weekend before I blow some additional insulation in the attic at the house...

Hope everyone is doing well.

short run and swim today - it was a shame I had to do it indoors as it is beautiful again outside today! Bike tomorrow.

So I looked back at my marathon plan a few days ago and realized it started this week, I guess no rest for the weary. 8 mile run on Friday.

I am using a plan from Hal Higdon, very basic but I like it. Does anyone have experience with marathon plans- if so, what did you use and did you like it?

My daughter's bday is today. We let her choose the dinner. We are having steak, baked potatoes and grilled artichokes. She is 8! Soooo not complaining!

Robin

I used the Higdon Novice 2 plan for my first marathon. I had already trained for another marathon I didn't get to do and done quite a bit of running before I started. So I modified it and did speedwork on the medium distance days. IMO it worked pretty well. That was the first and only full marathon I ran, but from what I can tell nothing prepares you for a marathon like a marathon! I don't think you can you target a time on your first. You can try, and you should, but nothing can prepare you for that last 10k even if you did everything right before hand. I think it would take me a few times to perfect the preparation for that pain! But I think Higdons plan will do just as good as any.

What Brian said on focusing on base building and not pace for first Mary. I used Pfitzinger's advanced marathon plan, but it assumes you already coming on boad with high base miles, so I really struggled keeping up in the first weeks. but i had a time goal and will probalbly use this plan for the future.

Happy Birthday to your daughter!

I have tried to use the Pfitzinger plans a few times.  Lots of volume even in the lowest volume plan.

Love it - you're daughter sounds like mine - loves steak (really any kind of beef -- that's my girl!)

For MCM last year - I did the Hanson Brothers (no-not the guys from Slap Shot!) plan. They just released a book in the winter that really details their philosophy. I love, love love this plan -- I think especially coming from the triathlon world where we're all used to double workouts and accumulative fatigue - it just really worked for me. Lots of volume but I was amazed at how easy it was to build the volume and how much faster I got in very little time. The most you run is 16 miles (3 times) -- this goes with the whole back and forth of running more than 3 hours -- does it really hurt or help you in the long run.

I felt very prepared for MCM - didn't hit my goal - but that had more to do with a little hurricane named Sandy barreling up the east coast.

Swim and 1.5 hr on the trainer then I'm off to build my arc...another 2 inches of rain over the next 24 hours!

That is good feedback on the Hanson plan.  I have a friend who is preparing for her first marathon this fall and we were discussing various plans and philosophies on training for the marathon.  She talked about the Hanson plan but decided against it as for her first she thought that having the 20 + mile runs on some of the other plans would help with the mental side of the training.

Finally catching up on posts. Sounds like everyone had good races. Love the pictures too. My sprint went o.k. - finished 2 minutes slower than last year, mainly due to the swim. It was really windy and I have done all of my training in a pool up to this point without a wetsuit, so the waves and being in the wetsuit for the first time this year made me panic somewhat. Guess what I'll be doing in the coming weeks? Getting out to OWS when its windy. Its was a local YMCA triathlon, so I took 25th overall of 138 and 4th in my AG.

I have a bike question: What is the difference between bike races (road race, time trial etc.) There is one in a couple months that I was thinking of entering, but not sure under what classification I should enter.

Todd

road race- distance based. Race from point to point. Drafting allowed
Criterium- time basede. you do laps with around a course until time is called, in which that is your last lap and first one to the finish wins. drafting allowed
TT- point to point race, no drafting, you against the clock

hope that helps

AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHH! Just got an email and my A race next weekend, and Oly, has been changed to a duathalon. I guess water in the lake is so low they don't feel like they can do the swim. How much water do you need to swim, for goodness sake? I am trying to be positive, but I am bummed out. But what can you do? I sure hope this isn't going to happen to all my races this summer.

I bet I beat that girl who was a collegiate swimmer, though.
