Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Wow, I have a busy week and look at everything I missed out on! To try to catch up:
My week has been insane. Thanks for all the birthday comments. I had a lovely weekend, but without much sleep involved. The cycle sportive kicked my butt as I hadn't given the hills the respect they deserved and had to drop to the 50miles to make it to work. Even at that there was well over 5000ft of climbing. The rest of the week has been a bit manic and my lack of sleep caught up with me in the form of yet another virus. I've been getting very run down with all the training and work. I'm now off work for a bit over a week, with the plan of getting in a heavy training week. I raced my last sprint of the year yesterday and got my best category position ever (3rd). We're away from home so I can't do my race report or post my monthly totals. Not sure when we'll have wifi again.
Today the plan is to check out the bike route for outlaw as my race yesterday was at the same venue so we stayed overnight. Then we're off up to the Lake District until Friday. I'm doing a 3.8k OWS tomorrow, which I was really looking forward to until we got an email on Thursday saying the water temperature is 11C (51F) and they recommend everyone has a neoprene hat. If it gets any colder they'll have to shorten the distance. My husband has already decided to change to the mile event as he does not cope well with cold water...
Good luck to everyone who is racing this weekend. Sounds like we've got a really busy group and I look forward to reading everyone's race reports. It's wonderful to see how much everyone has developed and I hope to see that coming out in people's results.
And as for the conversation that didn't happen... I am apparently alone in the female complement in saying that I have in fact pee'd on the bike at IM. I was wearing tri shorts, which dry quickly, so I didn't think it was a big deal. It was also raining heavily at times so there was a natural "rinsing" effect. And I had clean, dry socks in T2 (which, after the rain, were the most wonderful thing in the world - my friend who suggested I put my running shoes and socks in a bag got a massive hug afterwards as they were the ONLY thing in transition still dry!) |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED My May totals: Swim--7 h 4 m--11,900 yards Bike--13h 18m--187 miles Run--6 h 12 m--35 miles This week ramps up my training considerably. Plus, I'm starting to train with some of the local tri people, so no more ' footing' around (as my dad would say). Time to get it done... Three weeks until my first ever triathlon. Sprint distance (so I know I'll get my butt handed to me...just want to finish and get the experience under my belt)--any words of advice for a first timer whose never even seen a triathlon (except on t.v.)? |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED I'm about to ask a really dumb question.... I have a 2010 Felt B16 (leftover model from 3 years ago...steal of a deal). Love the bike....have around 500 miles on it. It's my first 'real' bike, and I truly know NOTHING about maintenance, tire changing, etc. (though the local tri club is going to host a 'bike maintenance/tire changing 101" seminar in a few weeks). I purchased what I would need to change a flat (tire levers, CO2 catridges, replacement tube, etc), but I have a question...the tube size is okay, but how do you know that the stem will be long enough? The stem on the replacement tube looks short (though the guy at the bike shop looked at my bike before selling me the tube--I really do trust that he knows what he's selling me). I have the Felt TTR4 wheelset (says 30MM/700CC on the wheelset), Vittoria Zaffiro Slick tires (700X23C written on the side) and my replacement tube is 700X 18-25C with a 37mm Presta stem. The tube size I'm pretty sure is good...the presta stem just looks awfully short to go from the tire up through the inner 'rim' of the wheelset (if that makes ANY sense). Thoughts? Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Tay-you look like a super hero no matter what your photo skills are. It appears that Melissa is going to have quite a day in Hawaii. They were predicting wind gusts to 40 mph and it was supposed to rain in Hawi. Should be interesting. Melissa, I know you won't be reading this until later, but good luck. We will all be rooting for you. |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Tay...Speaking of 'superpowers,' one of my friends says she feels like "Catwoman" in her wetsuit. I feel more like "Fatwoman!" LOL I was sort of happy that I fit better into the 2XU wetsuit and not the Orca. I'd never live down that I had a whale's name emblazoned across my chest! Looks like a perfect fit. When do you take it to the water? Good luck to everyone racing. May the wind be at your back (particularly if it's 40 mph!) the entire way! Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Hey gang! Hot and humid morning here in LA (lower Alabama) Race was a mixed bag. Solid swim, pushed the bike and based on my fading run I suspect I overcooked the bike. 1st in AG and 20/600 overall. Have not seen splits but my run felt bad! Oh well, at least I was able to race and I'm not dissappointed. Nancy-the tube should also have a stem length on it. If you have 30mm wheel I wouldlook for tubes in the 50-60mm range. That will give you plenty of stem for pump to grip. Might be able to get by with less but I like having not to struggle getting the pump head on. Tay.....looks very fast! |

Randy - well done! 1st in AG even with a run that you didn't feel was that great!? I find that impressive. Member 432 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Originally posted by glfprncs Three weeks until my first ever triathlon. Sprint distance (so I know I'll get my butt handed to me...just want to finish and get the experience under my belt)--any words of advice for a first timer whose never even seen a triathlon (except on t.v.)? That's some impressive training volumes, especially for a sprint... you'll be in great shape. Words of advice -- beware the swim. If your experience is anything like mine -- you'll get swept up in the race atmosphere, you'll have a ton of adrenaline, the gun will go off and you'll be like a bat out of he||... for the first 100m. Watch your pacing particularly in the opening minutes. Read my first ever race report... I like to think of it as a cautionary tale for first-timers. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks if I learned my lesson! Get in the water before race time -- swim around, warm up, get used to the wet suit. Chat with your neighbors during transition setup -- you're bound to find some more experienced folks -- chatting will help ease your nerves a bit. And guaranteed, you will find a first-timer who's more nervous than you. Apart from that -- just enjoy it. You're sure to have a blast! |

Member 432 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Well done Randy. Solid race! If you're slornow, I'd hate to have seen you when you were fastr I went on a long ride today -- 50K (previous longest was 40K) Trying to overshoot the distances I will need for my Oly in a couple of weeks. Building the distance is tough -- much like the HM last week, the last ~10-20% of the distance was rough. Good news is, I've done some experimenting with nutrition, and having some good success. All you people using Gu's and honey stingers and chomps -- y'all ain't got nothing on a stack of Oreos. My legs were BURNING when I was done -- but I was pretty impressed with my recovery -- about 30 minutes later I was fine. Progress is progress, I suppose! |

Nice wetsuit picture! I tried my tri suit on and feel a bit like I have a Halloween costume on but I imagine I will fit right in. I have scoped out the route, biked the run a few times and drove the bike route. Nothing to do now,but hopefully watch Miami lose!!! |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Way to go Melissa. I suspect that it was a very tough day out there. Usually the pro males are winning with a 3:45-55 but Craig Alexander won it in 4:05:xx. I can't wait to hear all about it. |
