This is going to be a great season. The more events I sign up for the more motivated I become to train! I have two upcoming events:

April 5 - Skagit Valley Tulip 5K
April 13 - Seahawks 12k

My best 5k is 23:34, which was during a training run two years ago. Since that time my son was born, I stopped training, gained 20 lbs, started training, and lost 20 lbs. I'm back to the same weight as two years ago but have double the running volume under my belt, and hope to go sub 23 min this time.

In other news, I've tricked out my road bike for triathlon for the paltry sum of $100. I did my 2013 triathlon season on a road bike with 25mm Gatorskins. I'll use the same road bike this year but with clip on aero bars ($35 in the bargin bin) and 23mm GP 4000s ($65). That should be good for 2mph. Woohoo

Ann,
Have you been xrayed? Boone spur, stress fracture, and arch problems come to mind. Would look for an orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist.

A short hiatus for me. I had a convention in Reno and did some trail running in the mountains of Lake Tahoe. I will post some video (Go Pro action!) and photos when I download them all. I have attached a few photos as a tease..

Keeping my fingers crossed that you meet your goal.

Good job in finding out ways to transform your road bike for Tri season and at a reasonable price.

Gorgeous photos. Can't wait for the video. (Don't you just love the Go Pro? How did you use it on the run?)

Heading to the TriMania expo in Boston tomorrow. If I'm sensible, I'll leave my credit cards at home lol.

I also have a 2:45 on the trainer scheduled for this weekend. I may have to tag in one of you guys to take over at some point.

Hey Nate, Just curious, what do you do? I also usually swim post call. I am a midwife in a busy hospital based practice on Long Island. I like swimming post call cuz its safe. Sometimes I do strength and def try to do yoga on my post call days. When ever I try to run post call, I regret it. it feels like my shoes have cement in them.

Regarding my heel, I think it is plantar fascitis. It is def better with rest. I'm stretching it and trying not to run. I should get on my trainer but haven't. Swimming has been great. Hoping its ok for my race next sat.

Can some one tell me how trainerroad works? I do have a garmin so I think I can do it. I am technically challenged tho. I am bored out of my mind on the trainer with just music or net flixs. I would love to know how to do trainer road and netflix. I could hopefully get through an hour plus with that set up!!

Waiting out the rain here in NY.

Hope all r well,
ann

G'day Team,

I hope everyone is well and training hard, looks like you are all putting some good workouts in the books.

I've been going through a change of meds over the past few weeks, but things are really looking up now I am off the one that caused me to sleep 14 hours a day! Lot's more energy and much more motivation, so I'm keen to get back into training again now that the side effects have subsided (nausea, migraine, leg jitters, all lovely things.. not!). I just finished my first TrainerRoad ride. Big thanks to Tim and Deb for motivating me to join. I did the 20 minute FTP test and my FTP result was woeful (59), so I am looking forward to bringing that up in the coming months.

I also decided to start back with my personal trainer. As from this coming Wednesday I am going to see him every week for a 45 minute session. It will help hold me accountable to my training and weight loss goals. I've still got my pool membership too so I plan on doing a fair bit of swimming till I can get my weight down again and start some light running. Plenty of time for chMelb HIM as it's not till Feb, but I'm keen to get stuck in early to build up my base and develop a routine over winter.

Anyway, hope everyone has an awesome weekend.

Ann,

I work as an acute care surgeon (trauma, emergency general surgery, and critical care). I generally have between 4 and 7 calls a month. This week has been really heavy. If I don't train post call I could miss two days some weeks. I like to run post call if its the right day for it. I typically get 20 minutes in and start to feel great, mostly because psyched my self up by not skipping out on my workout ("I could be sleeping but I am running 4 miles, and I feel great"). Generally I have low expectations for these sessions but typically surprise myself, and I general feel less tired after my workout then when I start.

Good Luck on your race next week.

I haven't tried trainer road. I also can't stand to be on the trainer for more than an hour and that is really pushing it. If I watch HBO I am typically a few mph slower than if I watch nothing.

Hi Ann,

Re the plantar fascitis have you tried rolling the instep of your foot on a tennis ball? I used to have to strengthen and stretch my insteps when I was doing martial arts and it worked a treat.

Also re TrainerRoad, you need to have the Garmin GSC 10 cadence/speed sensor attached to your bike so you can use the virtual power mode. Tim can probably explain it better, but basically TR is a series of workouts/plans designed for different levels. You do an FTP test first off to find out where your fitness is at and then the workouts change to suit. Every 6 weeks or so you re test your FTP to see improvement or where you need improvement. If you go to the site and download the software it will explain a lot. Fitting the sensor is a piece of cake. The site pretty much takes you through what you need to do to set it up. If you get stuck sing out, Deb, KTC, Jen and Tim all use it.

Nate, nice job on the swim! I used to be a police officer (12 years) and would train after evening and night shifts before I slept. I was always too wound up to go to bed so I figured I'd put the energy to good use. What distance is your next tri? I am entering a couple of local open water tris before my big one, but as we are heading into autumn/winter now they are a long way off. Good luck with the training and don't forget to have a few days off to taper.

Simone,

I really like trainerroad when I have to bike indoors. It helps me push myself when I normally would not myself. Sounds like you got things in order and are moving forward! Good to hear! Looking forward to hear your progress!

You sound like you are all doing really well. Me too. Swim is really slid. The bike is good if I can ever get outside. The run is OK. I am mentoring a slow group of runners with the run club and I think it may be slowing down my progress a bit. I'm going to start running a bit before the club workouts and see if that improves the speed. I do well on the treadmill, not as good on the track. I suspect that is normal. Arthritis rears it's head at times. A new dynamic to deal with.

The foot injury - take care to treat it now. It will only persist and get harder to get rid of...chronic is within the realm.

Great job on increasing the distance on the swim. It's all in the form. Right form, you can swim forever.
