kristinc0916 - 2009-01-23 12:05 PM Today I had next to zero motivation but went to the Y for a new boot camp type class. It wound up being just what I needed. Not a treadmill, not a bike but a good workout anyway.  The new instructor is a tri coach ~ I actually figured out after 1 minute in the class that he was a tri guy - he made us do lots of running drills and he had shaved legs. In my book, that = triathlete I'll definitely start making that my Fri. morning class. it was a bit slow today b/c he didn't know the levels of the (5) women but we all told him we wanted it harder and less breaks. I think next week I won't be able to move!  This weekend is the usual semi- chaotic schedule of swim, gymnastics, a b-day party.....last weekend the girls and I went to Ma. and Mike stayed behind. He actaully surprised Emily by painting her room yellow which she's been after us about since she could talk. Good Daddy

Sounds like a fun class, glad you foced yourself out the door for it!  ross training is always good.

Okay, getting to the point where I can deal with the &*%ugle bruise on  most of my right leg.  Still swollen enough that the tight jeans don't do it!

Weekend plans include what I hope will be either hilly or long on the bike, we'll see.  My friend Cass is guiding this one.  Sunday, 20 miles of running, with a starbucks break at 10 miles.  Not sure how I feel about that one, but these are the ladies that I'm doing the Mary with, and Coach Kevorkian is sick.  We'll give it a go!  Monday, long swim and then long massage - Christmas present redeemed at hoity-toity spa!  Yea!

Everyone have a great one, no matter your plans.   After Sunday's run, I'll look to you all for pacing advice for my Mary....5 weeks and one day out!!

If I took a Starbucks break at mile 10, I'd have to have a potty break at every mile thereafter!!!

Hi teammates!

I've been MIA this week with a sinus infection/cold crap along with just other stuff.  Just caught up on the thread and it sounds like there is lots of mostly good news, it all depends on how you frame it-

Congrats Mina on starting PT so you will become a stronger and faster runner in the future! And on the new bike.

Congrats Linda on learning what an awesomely strong woman you are!

Congrats Darren on the weight loss and super strong running!

Congrats Aquagirl on being glide-y, I love the pennies in a jar idea!

Thank you for your inspires.  Enjoy your weekend!

Well, we did hilly on the bikes.....and it was!  Hard, and a bit of rain, but a great sense of accomplishment!  That is, until I got a flat.  My friend and I were like Abbot and Costello....in the rain and mud!  CO2 container didn't work, used the pump, couldn't get a great seal - after we couldn't get the tire off the rim for 10 minutes!  My friend has done this multiple times, no clue what happened.  Had a real tough time getting all of the mud out of my shoes so I could clip in.....I'm sure it was fun to watch!  Rode 3 more miles to the coffee place, sat down and warmed up.  Came out to ......another flat.  Same tire.  Great.  However, the good news is that there's a bike store next door to the coffee shop.  Apparently my first flat last week had exposed a bit of the metal cabling on the tire, and that's what caused today's flat.....twice.  So 2 new tubes and a new tire later.....off we went.  $50 bike ride!

Tomorrow's the long run.  Hoping for no equipment failures!

Ouch!  That's expensive but replacing the tire too is the big expense.  I'm going to be replacing tires when I take the road bike in fo spring maintenance.  The tires that came on it aren't cheap but they lasted me 2 summers worth of training and racing so they're worth the money.

I took my BLUE out for a little bit.  It had cooled off a bit since my run so the long bike pants with a bike jacket over my sweat jacket wasn't enough.  I rode for less than 10 minutes but figured out a couple things...I need to practice getting on and off the bike more with the saddle moved up I have a harder time dismounting safely.

Did the Masters One Hour Postal Swim today - went 3360 yards!  I'm pretty psyched with that result being that I've only hit the pool twice this month and not once in the month of December.  I didn't eat enough before hand, went out a little too fast and had a brief moment when I thought I was going to completely bonk in the middle and just have to stop... it was very weird- delts burned, fingers tingly and I got really cold (the pool was really cold, too), but after a couple minutes I got through it and picked up a second wind and felt fine. Phew!

It was nice to see some of the Masters folks again (swam with them last summer) - I really like the coach, too - but it's $170 this season and after just buying a bike I don't know that I'll be able to swing that.

Tomorrow is one thing I struggle with: work traveling and not ditching the workout after.  I have a 5:30 flight to Philly tomorrow am which means waking up before 4.  Ugh.  I should be back in Boston by early afternoon, but flying just takes some of the life out of me (as does waking up SOOOO early!).  Aiming to ditch the office early to make a spin class at 5.  It's a 30 minute or 60 minute option, but I'd be psyched if I make it through the 30 minutes instead of just going home to watch tv.  Wish me luck!

Wed is a session at my PT's office so I'll get a new strength and stretching routine which I'm psyched about.  The rest of the week is a little up in the air at the moment, but not worried about not having an exact plan this week.

Hope everyone else had a restful weekend and has a good week planned!

This is the last week of the month. How are all of you participating in the IM challenging doing? I have one more bike to finish up my double IM distance with lots of extra swimming.

Anyone have a creative idea for next month?

How about a mini personal week goal/challenge for this week?

Happy Monday everyone!

I think I'll hit my double Ironman Bike and run this week. I've made it on the swim. My goal this week is to stick to my training plan and get my workouts in. Most important workout this week is the long bike on Saturday morning followed by 30 minute brick run. I'm hoping to hit as close to 56 miles on the bike and transition to a moderate run.

January's totals:
Bike:11h 39m 04s  - 196.8 Mi
Run:8h 52m 06s  - 51 Mi
Swim:7h 10m  - 22052.06 Yd
Strength:3h 00m
Walking:

2h 30m

i'm pretty happy given my unexpected 'job change'

of course i had grand ideas that I'd quadruple the entire ironman challenge but, sigh, the brain has gotten in the way a few times and kept me mentally squashed...

January's totals:
Bike:3h 36m  - 60 Mi
Run:7h 44m 14s  - 43.6 Mi
Swim:5h 00m 01s  - 4480 Yd

this week my challenge is NO DAY off until Friday (per my schedule) the most effective way for me to do this is to rise and shine early and get the workout in before 10am!

i do have 9 more miles to hit my ironman run but i also have a 10K on sunday so i might not squeeze them all in but thats OK!!  thanks for all of the support, too!!!

I know my training plan doesn't call for it but ...

Would it be okay to throw in another swim workout this week? Thoughts? I've had some lower back issues that the swim seems to help. Should I just trust my plan and sit tight?

My thought is go for the swim, Jessica - but this comes from someone whose fav tri sport is swimming.  It's fine to stray from your prescribed schedule if you're listening to what your body wants.  So if a run isn't going to help, treat your back to some yoga or a float or even a massage if that's what it needs!  The swim's ok -- just don't overdo it or you'll end up hangin out with the PT or Chiro or in bed instead of following the plan.  Hope you get some good stretching in and your back feels better soon!

January's totals:
Bike:4h 45m 28s  - 68.07 Mi
Run:5h 03m 39s  - 26.8 Mi
Swim:2h 30m 55s  - 7760 Yd

Planning on 60min spin tonight so after this eve I'll have <30mi left on the bike to make it to the end of the single Ironman.  Thought I would double up on the run, but instead am close to doubling up on the swim.  Not quite the run I hoped, but psyched it looks like I'll make it to the end of the bike which I wasn't able to last time I tried to do this challenge!

Thanks Mina. I find that weeks that are heavy run or bike (not much swimming ) tend to wear on my back. I'll probably throw in another swim workout (I promise to take it easy) this week and perhaps a soak in the hot tub and/or a light yoga session. It'll do me good and set me up for a more sucessful ride on Satuday.

Ooh, HOT TUB! HOT TUB! I vote HOT TUB! Laughing  It's been so good for my body lately that I'm becoming a serious advocate for it.  My next gym will have a hot tub, and when I grow up [heh] I'll have one in my back yard!

Sounds like you may need to think about doing something a little differently on your heavy run and/or bike weeks - maybe budget some time for a few minutes of both back stretching AND strengthening after workouts in those weeks?  Or back stretches (cat and camel or something like that) before and after the bike and run and do some back strengthening on the opposite weeks to see if it helps without overdoing it?

I'll bite - my motivation is next to nothing at the moment...I completely FORGOT about the IM challenge for the month! My mini week goal will be to complete IMx2 for bike and run this week.  My mind has vanished - if I don't write stuff down, like participating in the challenge, I forget it.  OK  - I'll get on the trainer tonight and tomorrow will be on the treadmill.  Great idea, Kathy!

Well here's me...

January's totals:
Bike:4h 11m 27s  - 89.91 Mi
Run:2h 40m 24s  - 13.74 Mi
Swim:2h 39m 40s  - 3850 M

I figure if I can run 2.4 miles a day I can reach my run challenge.  I should be able to do the bike in 2 sessions, and the swim I'll finish today.  I think I can do it, but the time for the run will be tough.
