Team,

I’ve been recovering from an  a  bad Achilles strain and small tear, on both legs. This was the pain I reported last week. This was caused by the anti-biotic “ leviquin” (not sure if this is how it is spelled, but anyway). I had a bad reaction to the anti-biotic which caused severe tendonitis, and running made it much worse. I am very lucky they did not rupture as has been known to happen with “leviquin”.  Funny thing now is all the medical professionals I have seen in the past week seem to acknowledge this as common information, yet no one told me of the possible side effect, not even in my consultation with my Pharmacist when I picked up the prescription.

It looks like I will be starting from scratch when I do finally come back full strength. However, I did sneak in a short swim today with not too much pain. My wife would not be pleased with me if she found outJ I am bummed out, but I am not going to let it get the best of me.

Best wishes…Joel

Joel...so sorry to hear about your injury situation.  I hope the recovery time is short since it was medical in nature and not traumatic.

I have been a paramedic since 1975 and have been involved in sports medicine and emergency medicine at least that long and I have NEVER heard of a situation like that.  An anti-biotic causing joint inflamation that could result in a ruptured tendon.....that is AMAZING to me.  I would have surely missed that question on a test.  I have a pretty good friend that is a pharmacist and I am going to ask him if there are any other meds that I should know about that could cause traumatic injuries from taking them while training.

That is so bad for you, Joel, but such good information for the rest of us.

Joel - Sorry to hear about your poor luck.  I teach Pharmacology for Sport Medicine.  I checked my Quinolone notes to make sure I had something regarding that side effect and it was there.

Amy - Thanks for sharing your experience.  I have a feeling I need some adjustments at the stem.

Beth - Thanks for the advice about safety coverage in the water.  I never had thought about that.

Yanti - focus for each workout. I believe youhave mentioned that before. For me, the focus is usually finishing with a smile!!

Steve - Thanks for the insight on why the huge base.  I really need to get after the other disciplines if I want to see my HIM nighmares dreams come true.

I have been slacking life got in the way for a couple weeks.  Conference on education and then a quick trip home.  Now, it's back at it with an intent...I hope...  no really it's there.  I did get in the pool for the first time in about 1 yr.  I will say this has been the hardest discipline to return to. I am extremely self-concious about the scar.  I know to most it's not real noticable bu I know it's there.  I just have to get over myself and deal with it is all.  But, I did flail swim about in the pool.

No worries, Suzie, sometimes life just does get in the way! Remember to ease back into the workouts.

So here's another thought on focus: what small adjustment can you make to make THIS workout better?

For example, in the pool tonight, I focused on FINISHING my stroke--I have a tendency to do a big pull, but then finish weak. That strong stroke finish into recovery gives me one extra bit of push which really adds up over hundreds of strokes.

Ideas for swimming (there are many more for all three sports, feel free to jump in!):
- RELAX
- stretching out as long as you can in the water
- catch or finish
- keeping a high elbow underwater

Biking:
- smooth circles
- relaxing hands, wrists and shoulders (esp. on climbs ... keep your hands relaxed like playing a piano)
- slightly higher cadence or as even cadence as possible

Running:
- running tall (string up through spine and pulling up on top of head)
- shortening and lightening your stride (esp. on climbs ... pitter patter)
- even pacing (do you slow down at the end? have uneven pacing?)
- shoulders relaxed and square to front (not swinging around a lot)

Ding ding ding! You are both correct--the 6 year old won. (Although I'm not too sure how hard the 12 year old was really fighting. She hates cleaning, especially her own room).  And Steve, the 6 yr old is the feisty one in my house too, most of the time. Ad that's saying alot since his sister is a pre-teen, and has been a princess since day one. *roll*

Hi fellow manatees!! I have been MIA for a while on our group thread. sorry! Again, I must re-evaluate my priorities! I just want to wish all of you a happy Friday tomorrow and a great weekend too! Tomorrow, I am off of work. Hubby is going to get fitted for a new tri bike. We're trying to do our part to stimulate the economy! Sunday we have a swim analysis scheduled where they do the underwater video taping and everything. Considering that I am one step above a cat swimming in the water, it should be fun! Last Saturday, we went to an Endurance Symposium which was really cool. I learned a lot and can't wait to put some of what I learned to good use. The biggest thing that I need to work on, is my swim- particularly my glide and my catch. Anyway- take care group and train on!!

I just want to say how proud I am of the Manatees who feel like they are struggling with swimming but are making great strokes in doing it anyway--Suzie, Steve, Sami--swimming is really tough. You are out of your element and have to worry about things happening in so many different directions. Running and biking are pretty much two-dimensional--stay upright and go forward! but swimming is a whole different story as each arm is doing a different thing and your body is rotating back and forth while your legs are fluttering up and down!

Sami's comment about swimming just above cat level reminded me of this--think of yourselves as TIGERS! Long, lean, sinewy-relaxed in the water, stretching out your paws, but very powerful on the stroke!

So I went the local tri club's swim clinic this morning. I don't know why, but I have a tendency to shy away from the more advanced groups, when that's where I really should be for the swim. I changed lanes after about 10 minutes in the intermediate lane with 2 coaches and 5 other people, and went into the advanced lanes with 2 coaches and 11 other people. I got so much more out of it than I think I would have had I stayed in the lower lane. The camera they were using to do individual underwater taping wasn't working, so we were taped from above-ground, from the front and from the side. The critique session was good, too. It's amazing how much you can learn by watching other people's form and hearing the critique and kudos. And I was a swimmer for year as a kid/teen, so you'd think I had heard it all before. The weird thing is I think I could go to the different clinics and presentations the club puts on over and over and still walk away with more god info.

Is anyone else a member of their local tri club? What kind of benefit do you see in membership?  What to they offer/give in terms of support and information?

Great job at the clinic Amy.  I am going to one this Sunday.  I always get something to work on everytime I attend one.

I halped fellow Manatee, Susan, start our club in 2007.  We now have about 125 total with about 50+ that are active.  We took 43 people to their first Tri last June and we hope to take around 75 this June.  We have weekly runs and rides from about Oct through the June event and we hold some type of event each month from Jan through May.  we had a Chi running clinic in Jan and this weekends swim clinic is put on by our team.  We provide a free training plan (one of the ones from here on BT that is slightly modified) and we also have a Mentor program to match up new people with experienced ones to help with motivation/training etc...just like the Manatees.

I think there are many benefits to joining if the club is run right...but I am biased.  There are several clubs here in the Atlanta area that are great and as our group caters to almost exclusively newibies thre arre also those that cater to the AG'er and the really competitive amature.

BTW...since Susan is my Chiropractor and Massage Therapist...my main motivation for being involved is that she will REALLY hurt me if I don't behave and do as I am told.

Good morning, Manatees, Steve, Amy!

The benefits all depend on the particular club you belong to. It happens that LA Tri Club (aside from being the National Champs last year, woo-hoo) is one of the biggest and the best, so for $75 a year you VERY quickly make the fee back in schwag and discounts. It's kind of ridiculous the value we get. Some of the best benefits are peer coaching--there are multiple workouts every day of the week and someone is always happy to help.

Dropping a line to the club's president or training director should yield you a polite and informative answer. If it doesn't, that might (or might not) reflect on the way the club does things. Particularly you may want to look at how the club can help you with your weakest discipline.

As for me, just checking in ... I keep slowly building back up to Iron training volume. Still not where the plan is at, but I'm getting there ... wisely!

I also need a new saddle, but can't afford it right now, so maybe next paycheck or the next. Sucks that my rides are somewhat curtailed right now, though!

Alright group...I need some help.

I am looking for some really good "Classic Rock" playlists.  Stuff like:

ZZ Top, Stones, Beatles, Dire Straights, etc.

Some more obscure...Cream, Atlanta Rhythm Section, etc.

Everytime I have tried to make a list over the years I always leave out some of the best stuff because it doesn't come to my addled brain while I am loading the music.

Anyway...I have one of my softball players that is a geek techno-guru, and she has offered to load a bunch of music on my iPod if I can get her a list.

Looking for general listening stuff as well as stuff to run with...I know that some don't think that iPods and running mix....well I have realized that sometimes when I run it really helps me not listen to ME.  Because the ME person wants to pack it in and go home but the me needs to stay out and train.

Thanks guys and you can post the list here or PM me.  If it is too long just e-mail me at sw9356 @ aol.com

Just a quick run through my playlists...

"Can't Find My Way Home" (Blind Faith)
"Still the Same" and "Night Moves" (Bob Seger)
"Simple Man" and "Free Bird" (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
"Dream On" and "Angel" (Aerosmith)
"Stairway to Heaven" and "Kashmir" and "Going to California" (Led Zeppelin)
"Walk on the Wild Side" (Lou Reed)
"Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd)
"Stuck in the Middle with You" (Stealers Wheel)
"The Joker" (Steve Miller Band)
"All Along the Watchtower" (Jimi Hendrix)

Do The Eagles and Don Henley count as classic rock? It's kind of a tough genre, actually. Like, does Bob Dylan belong in there? I'm a huge Dylan fan, but I probably wouldn't label his stuff classic rock. I probably would put some stuff by Guns n Roses in there, but they're obviously after the typical classic rock period. And then there's stuff like Supertramp and Fleetwood Mac that seems too "pop" to call classic rock, but maybe fits?
