Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Coach looks like a go! An experienced triathlete with several IMs. Was sort of a me type several years ago. I just signed up for St. Anthony's in late April in St. Pete, FL so I can ramp up for that while you west coasters ramp up for the CA 70.3. ~ AZ Sunshine ~ - 2009-11-30 11:47 PM losta - 2009-11-29 1:42 PM Quiet in here lately. I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving break and that everyone is ready to go for a great December. I am talking with a possible coach for next year tonight and have first swim with a local tri group tomorrow evening. Hey Lisa!! How did the meeting with the coach go? |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great holiday weekend! I got back from Maine yesterday and did not get in any decent workouts but I did walk with my mother and her 2 labs everyday. I tried to get some running in but the first attempt was lousy as I was her yellow lab "Mosey"s guardian and once my mother was out of sight on the trails he refused to move. I was trying to run my intervals and it was like dragging a pile of logs behind me! If anyone had come up to me on the trail at that time they would've fell over laughing at the site! I finally had to run backwards holding his leash and giving him over zelaous encouragement to get him moving..quite a sight! The 2nd attempt was high winds and rain but I did manage to at least get around her neighborhood for almost 20 minutes and I was DONE!! I was exhausted, not sure if it was me or the cold weather... I'll be back to running with my group tonight and hopefully will get to work early enough tomorrow for the spinning class! I'll look at swimming tomorrow night! |

Member ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, Leah, I'll have to look into that tri... it could be great. I'm running the half marathon in huntington beach in Feb, so we'll see. My training plan only has me biking 2 hours as the longest ride so far which for me was just under 30 miles... am I in trouble? I have yet to attempt a 60 mile ride... Just throwing this out there... My parents live in San Diego, about 45 min. from the start line of the Oceanside 70.3 if anyone needs a place to crash, you're welcome to let me know. I havent decided if I'll stay there the night before the race, but certainly before and after. They'll be out of town so it will really be just a vacant house. On a food note, Are you guys avoiding or eating any particular foods during training? Any books on Nutrition you'd recommend? I just eat whatever I want for the most part and hope the workouts will take care of it, but there must be a better way. Thanks! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I find that I am partial to the cheese, fried cheese and cheese on meat food groups. Unfortunately this nutrition plan does not seem to be offering optimal energy for training. Are you looking to lose weight or just fuel your workouts? I have a few books that I would recommend including Chris Carmichael's which really does a good job discussing periodization of your diet depending on the phase of your training.
Do not ask Leah about nutrition!! She and her crossfit friends go out at night and eat only what they kill. |

Member ![]() | ![]() haha a combo i guess. I'd love to find info on nutrition for fuel but that doesnt encourage you to eat 3000 calories a day ![]() |

I just eat whatever I want for the most part and hope the workouts will take care of it, but there must be a better way. Thanks! I'm also doing the Surf City Half Marathon and will have to figure out a way to connect. Now, we just need to talk Kate into doing it as well. I do already have my reservation for Oceanside, but thanks for the offer. I haven't done more than 30 miles on the bike yet either, but I am expecting to start ramping that up. I have mostly been working on developing aerobic conditioning on the bike, which means learning to pedal at a higher cadence than I am used to. Kate does these long bike rides and she will kick our fannies on the bike. Nutrition. Yeah, they're right. Don't get me started. I would recommend looking at the Paleo Diet and Zone. But I do not have nutrition and endurance events worked out yet and that is something that I seriously need to be better at. I'll let you all know how it goes and try to stay off the soapbox. I just said "try," not that I would be able to accomplish it. OK. Brief interlude between meetings is over and now I gotta go. Have a good day. Tell us what you did for training today and what was right about it and what was wrong. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, I'm here! Took a few days to get back to things, but I'm ready to go now. I have to get caught up on the back-posts. Welcome elkekane! Hope everyone had a good holiday, and I'll check back in after I read-up on what I missed. I don't think I'm going to weigh in until next week. I was actually fairly good most of the week but Greg and I went temporarily stupid on the trip back food wise and it took me a day or two to start recording my food again. Swam for an hour and a half this afternoon (didn't have my lap watch so not exactly sure how far) plus the walk there/back and as soon as my husband gets off my treadmill I'm going to get a run in as well. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome Back Debb! I should have waited on the scale too. I'm at 192 this week. Leah - I'll look up that race and get back to you. I had planned a half marathon that day but this looks interesting. Elke - Thanks for the offer to stay but I also rented a place up in Oceanside. We are pretty close to the start so the family can sleep in and go back and forth to the room. As for the bike distance, I'm all about the mileage. I need to mentally know I can cover the distance. That is why I need to go long. You might be tougher then me though. Lisa - Congrats on the race. I'm excited you have one on the books so early. We all need to get moving now. If you want to do the race with Leah in March, Palm Springs is about 4 -4.5 hours from Phoenix. It is a pretty easy drive. Scott - You crack me up. You have Leah pegged. Keeley - Sounds like an adventure with those dogs! I'm going to go get some new tennis shoes at lunch today. Brooks again I think. I'm have a 1/2 marathon this weekend. How I feel after the run this weekend will determine whether I do the 1/2 or full marathon in January. I'm signed up for the full. My miles have been low but I could probably pull it together by January 17th. If those darn "Biggest Losers" could run a full marathon in 60 days on TV last night I can too right? |

Ok - are you actually going to buy "tennis shoes" or are you referring to running shoes? If the latter, I am concerned you may be dating yourself by using the term tennis shoes. You need to become a little more hip. If you are buying actual tennis shoes..what the heck for..you have training to do. I just bought a pair of Brooks Adrenalins..apparently it is what all the cool kids are wearing. As for the biggest loser...Apparently triathletes really must pump themselves up and talk themselves into things being harder then they are.....Kona cannot possible be that hard - one of the former winners of the biggest loser did the course in 17:03 with hardly any training and after he gained a bunch of weight back. (Doesn't it peeve you that someone like that can get a slot and others who train their butts off do not - its not like Kona needs more publicity) Did you see that the winner of the Biggest Loser marathon averaged 12:00 miles? I was actually fairly impressed. Ok - I am going to try and work now. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK . . . OK . . . I am going to buy RUNNING shoes! I'm going to check your brand out. I don't know what kind of Brooks I had last time. I only bought Brooks b/c someone told me they were good for Heavier runners. I did like them! I couldnt' believe the Biggest Loser times. When I did my marathon my time was 5:59:58! They all kicked my butt. I also saw the show where they talked about the Biggest Loser doing Kona. I Couldn't believe that either. It made me feel a little better about my IM though. If he can do it, so can I. I just hope I do it 4 minutes faster than he did! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() About the Kona thing... It doesn't bother me he was given a spot. They have lottery spots after all so not everyone is "uber"-triathlete there. Anything that gives our sport more attention means more people get involved, more races are created, and more cool gear/gadgets are available. It's not like he didn't train at all, just not as much as is ideal, and if it inspires people to get off their butt and try all the better. It seems like on TBL it appears as they prepared everyone throughout their whole 12 weeks training enough so that they could ramp up enough to finish the mary with 60 days of seriously buckling down. Saying they only had 60 days was a bit misleading they really trained for 5+ months they just didn't KNOW it. Heh. I'm still feeling out my schedule for next year. I only have the big fear inducing ones planned so far! Okay so I lied I stepped on the scale: 190. Not bad only 1 up. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think we should put all of the races on so we can praise those who do well and denigrate and shun those who do poorly..Ok maybe we will just praise people..bunch of hippies. The shoe I just got out of were the Saucony Omni's. I was told that they were motion control while the Adrenalins were a stability. And obviously I need all the help I can gt staying stable. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My latest RUNNING shoes (If I say sneakers does make me fred too?!) are Brooks also. Brooks Beasts. They are on the heavy/clunky side, but I'm liking them a lot. Seems to keep my feet from wobbling as much as my other stability shoes. I went with a wide size this time for the first time and no matter how long I run I'm not getting that pinched foot thing that would happen on longer runs. BTW I found RunningWarehouse has great prices on the brooks and there is a coupon code out there too for 15% off... just do a google search. |

I just thought the Saucony shoes fit better this time. But I would get Brooks again. I don't know which Brooks model they were. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Coupon code is CP20 (click on team discount at the top of the page) www.runningwarehouse.com Yes I am frugal (cough cheap cough) Just got a replacement pair of Beasts for 85 bucks free shipping... usually 130. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leah I like my Saucony (Hurricanes) too. They are super light and comfy but apparently I'm just too heavy for them to be proper stability shoes. I use them as walking shoes now. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! I have tried dozens of RUNNING SHOES and have of late taken a liking to Nike once again. Lunar Glide + and Equalon 3 are what I'm currently wearing to run. Earlier this year I bought Brooks Beasts but they are like running in snow shoes, then I tried some Sauconys but during my first triathlon in the poring rain they held water so I took them out of the lineup. Then I tried Mizuno but wasn't crazy about those and went to the Nikes and have been happy for a while. I have been working on a questionnaire my new coach sent me so she knows all about me. Then just doing the regular stuff. You IMers need to start seriously looking into nutrition for during the bike and run, that is the 4th discipline in IM, if you don't get that right you will bonk. It needs to be well planned and rehearsed in training too. Okay, I'm getting off the soap box. I too watched BL last night I was pretty amazed they all made it. I wonder what type of course support they had, I saw there was a police car and truck with each of them. I think the BL philosophy is a good inspiration for many but a bad execution and example. People see them losing 15 pounds a week and get discouraged because they have trouble losing 1 or 2. But these people work out 6 hours plus a day because when they are at the ranch that is all they do. It must be hard when they leave the show. Last week I watched the where are they now episode and many of the successful contestants have gone into the health and fitness field which is very good and keeps them fit but it must be hard to return to the same place where they had gained all that weight in the first place.
