bar92 - 2010-06-09 11:26 AM So, today I hit a milestone in my life and turn 40.  Lots of people fear the dreaded "40", but I embrace it.  After all, thanks to the lifestyle I have had over the past 5 years, I don't feel 40.  I am probably in better shape now than I was at 30.  Regardless of whether you do sprints, olympics, half ironmans or the full Ironman, embrace the healthy lifestyle and live life to the fullest.

Happy birthday.....I will be joining you later in September and just like you, I don't feel 40 at all.

Holy Moly, I was at Navy Pier when the game was going on and the place basically erupted whenever we'd score a goal, and of course after we won.  So many people out & cheering!  On my bike ride home there were so many people driving down the streets honking and yelling.  Crazy crazy.

Endurance sports are the fountain of youth!  I will be 52 in July and in the best shape of my life!  My first swim lesson was just prior to my 48th birthday and I did IM WI at 50.

Happy Birthday, the best is yet to come!

Repost for those of you who didn't see it.  What tri shorts and bike shorts do you wear?  Why do you like them?

Thanks!

Ah, I didn't see this the first time around!

I have a pair of Pearl Izumi bike shorts & tri shorts, as well as a skirt sport tri shorts.  I also used to have a Descente tri shorts.

I really like both my Pearl Izumi shorts (I also have a pair of their run shorts that I also like).  They're comfortable and have never given me problems.  I used the bike shorts on my 75 mile ride this weekend, and they were great!  I've used the tri shorts on various swims & runs (up to 8 miles) with no issues.  Though, I think the tri shorts run small.... My run shorts and bike shorts are both smalls, but I had to go with medium for the tri shorts.

The skirt sports tri shorts were the only pair of tri shorts I owned last year (I got my other stuff at end-of-season sales) and they've served me well!  I was only doing shorter distances last year, and they were fine for that.  I should find where they are and try them out for my longer workouts now that I'm doing them.

I only used my Descente shorts once, but then got into a minor bike accident involving 2 other cyclists (at a stop light, the guy in front of me stopped suddenly w/o warning, we bumped wheels, I fell over, and the guy behind me just about ran over my butt).  The shorts ripped and i had to ride the rest of the way home with my butt hanging out of my shorts.  Lovely.  Obviously those were extenuating circumstances, but the material just seems like it should withstand a little more than just a little wheel tap!  Whatever, I will never buy another pair of Descente shorts again.

Appreciated your honesty on the bike shorts.  Always helpful to have someone clearlysay why or shy not a product is advised.  Did you call the company and let them know that the shorts were trashed with one fall and it wasn't a hard collision?  Just curious if you had seen if they would try to make anything righ with customer service.

You know I hadn't thought about that!  At the time, I was so mad that the shorts ripped that I just threw them away.  It didn't even occur to me to call and complain!  Plus, since it was early in my first season, I was trying out so many products for the first time so I just figured those shorts weren't a good match for me...  Considering I was just starting out riding my bike and my handling skills weren't so great I figured I'd need clothing that were a bit more resiliant than that; didn't want to ruin a pair of shorts every time I fell on my bike!  If it happened this year or maybe even later in the season last year, I probably would have tried to see about calling the company and getting them replaced, like you suggested.

To be fair, they were comfortable for the 3/4 of a ride that I was wearing them!

Umm, there was fire works and the fire trucks were honking their horns in my town of Tinley Park. I actually didn't watch the game. I went and saw a movie instead. The theater was empty though!

I have my very first triathlon this weekend (last years tri didn't count cuz I walked the run knowing that I would).

I am excited and nervous.  My knee is still acting up, but I will tough that out.  I heard today that the course is pretty busy since it is 2 6 mile loops and about 2500 people.  I was hoping to get down in the tri bars and plow through since that is where I am strongest.  Hopefully there will be enough room to get around people.

It a course where I think there will be alot more beginners (maybe not have even trained, don't know courtesy, etc).  Any suggestions to avoid people, potential crashes, etc. on the bike?

Good luck Carrie!

Is is a short loop that you're riding twice with 180 turns?  Those are tricky!  Being super observant of where you are is key.
THey have a course like that here that the National Du festval was held on.  I heard there were a lot of crashes on it.

My weekend plans don't include racing, they include
Fri....OWS with the tri club
Sat.....long ride, probably 50  if the weather holds
Sun.....butt crack o'stoopid long run, going to do my first continuous swim 2400 yards...... (that's my goal anyway) then the youth group is having an end of the year party here so I will be overrun with teenagers.

On a crowded course you just need to be very aware and make sure that you are following the rules (ie riding right, passing left).  Make sure you're yelling on your left when you pass, but even so you will get riders who will drift to the middle of the road no matter what you yell.  I know, it happened to me for 15 straight miles last weekend no matter how loudly I yelled.  It doesn't hurt to glance over your left shoulder when passing either because there will be people that will come up behind you to pass without announcing themselves.  That, and know where people are when you're making a turn.

Other than that, hope you have a great race.  Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Yep, short course and some turns.  I will try to at least drive the course on Saturday to know when the turns are coming.

I am just worried about so many people.

P.S. Forgot to tell you all my funny crash story at the Udder Century - almost end of the ride too.  The sign said go left, but I saw people go right. By the time I determined to just go left there was a car coming and I was at a standstill.  Got my left foot out, but bike and me were falling right.  It is funny now, but there was a F*** storm going on at the time.  Small scratch on the brake lever, nothing else on the bike. Ego was probably more bruised.  Luckily there was no one around to see this

Good luck on your race!! I looked at the course maps for your race and the bike looked identical to the naperville tri they do in august. I can tell you from last year, the bike course does get crowded at one point, especially when your doing your second lap. So be careful and enjoy your race!

Good luck with the HIM!

For me, my first HIM is two weeks away, so I've begun tapering.  32 mile ride and 1 mile swim tomorrow followed by a nine mile run and cheering my boyfriend on in his first ever criterium on Sunday.

No racing for me this weekend.  I did todays' run already this morning (and am already in need of a nap Smile).  I plan to ride about 3 hours Satuday, but rumor has it winds are going to be 15-20mph tomorrow, so we'll see.  Then another run on Sunday.

Happy Racing Carrie and Neal...looking forward to the race reports.

As for me, I'm going to try to hit the pool tonight. Saturday marks my return to regular workouts with a short/long run of about six miles.  Regular yoga class on Sunday.  If the wind dies down by then, I want to get out on the bike in the afternoon.  If not, it will be back to the pool.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I am having serious doubts about the whole HIM thing this year......between the asthma flare that turned into creeping crud (which seems to want to linger) and the whole lack of sleep thing thanks to being 50 and female.....yeah....not fun.  I have a drop back week next week (thank GOD) and will probably drop the plan to an easier level again until the body is more cooperative.  Not going to pull the plug on it yet but it's a possibility for as lousy as I have felt....Anyway, going to keep working on the whole thing but am more than frustrated by the body's lack of cooperation.

I have to brag and ask for encougagement, I copied this from my blog:

Went to Fat Camp(Weight Loss Support Group)yesterday and got on scales, since 4/8 I have lost 51 lb of fat, put on 20 lb of muscle, for a net of 31 lbs(23 lb of fat lost, 6 lb muscle gained, net 17 lb loss last month). Starting weight 285, yesterday 254. I am stoked, I have been weighing at home, and I was afriad I was losing muscle but not the case. I know the easy weight is off and the next 30 lb(goal of 225) will be slower coming off, but that is OK. Training and eating right are so much easier now than when I started this two months ago. Running still sucks..........It is easier, but I still hate it, I would rather be biking or swimming. On a swim this week the water felt thick and I was struggling to swim smooth, I just thought to myself that I could be running today and everything from that point was easier!

There is a Tri(1000 yrd swim, 19 miler, 4 mile run) next weekend I want to do, but not sure bout the run. The swim and bike piece of cake, I might just do Aqua Bike. Yes I have done 7 and 8 mile runs in the past couple of weeks but they were extermly slow and not following a swim and bike(which will be slow). I just hate the thought of being so slow, this is a race, damnit. I know I should not let pride keep me from doing it but...................

That is awesome progress!!!

As far as the race, as long as your body holds, do the tri and just keep the run slow.  Or do a walk/run (which has been recommended to me alot).

If you are like me and have to feel competitive and the run will weigh on you mentally do the aquabike.  I have a few aquabikes set up for this year.  The nice thing about those are you have to pace yourself on the swim still, but you can blow yourself up on the bike kicking and you are done . . no run

I am totally with you on the tri thing though.  My body hates the running, but it is almost like a rite of passage doing the tri vs. the aquabike. It is not the same saying you did an aqaubike.
