Veteran 365 WTH? This isn't coral. It's corn! | Subject: RE: Yanti and Lynn, Mentors of the Manatee Melee: FULL To hell with sugar and spice. Little girls are made up of: IRONMAN. CONGRATULATIONS LYNN!! Now, the question begs. Did you get the tattoo already? What about the car sticker? LOL I just signed up to volunteer at IMKY at the women's tent to see how things roll in there and to encourage the racers. And, on June 30th, 2011 at 10:17 am EST, my best friend from Team in Training and I AGREED to the mad idea of trying to get into IMAZ '12. It sells in less than :30 hr. So, we'll see if we get lucky. We're seriously considering getting ready to shell out for foundation slots since the extra is tax deductible. I wanted to do COZ as my first one but won't be able to afford a new tri bike/ZIPPS and a destination IM in the same year. Something about not finding the trust fund paperwork!!! LOL

Love that --- little (and grown up) girls ARE made up of IRONMAN!!! Kudos to you for volunteering! The vols at IM CdA were amazing, awesome, incredible, etc. Just not enough words to tell you how valuable they are and how much they can make the IM experience that much more enjoyable. I had people putting sunscreen on me, hunting down hair bands because both ones I had in my hair fell off somehow. I've been to IMAZ as a spectator/sherpa and can answer some questions you may have about the course, if you want. And, just an FYI -- COZ is just effin' hot and buggy, but if you're really set, then go for it. I do know the swim in beautiful there. Thanks again everyone for your support and manatee=isms. I just got home last night and will work on my RR. I started it but it's going to be a novella (I'm not kidding), because I'm trying to recall and document my first IM experience, mostly for myself. I'm going to check out Yanti's piglet photos and RR though. She knows how to peak one's interest, doesn't she? Forgot to answer -- no car sticker. I have a new IM CdA sticker on a mirror in my garage where I workout and a license plate frame that says IM CdA. Not sure if I'll do the sticker. And, I'm not doing the tattoo. But I do go around telling random people that I'm an Ironman....and I'm only partially kidding. Oh, and I did buy a pretty white gold M-dot charm for my necklace that I'm wearing now. What a report! It still left me with a strong desire to cross paths with Bali some day.
I was so impressed that you were able to highlight so many positives with the terrifying events thrown in. Your optimistic spirit is contagious. You're amazing! |

Yanti an all - any experience or input on the crossfit training for endurance sports? Not experience, but as usual I've read just about everything under the sun about CFE ... There are very few circumstances I'd recommend it for a newbie. You are not a newbie. You have a pretty good base on you. On the theory of it, I can't see how it would be better (for the same time invested) than a solid distance-based training program IF getting faster or even just training more efficiently is one's goal. I can see a lot of reasons why it would be worse. However, if one has different goals, that's also a different story. In practice, there's just not been enough people yet (with varying backgrounds) training and racing on a CFE protocol over the long haul for me to form an opinion. Have you read the BT and ST threads on it? |

OK, if we get in I'll get info from you. Yes, I've heard that and also wicked wind in COZ. But the thing is, I did a 3 day 600km bike ride around Puerto Rico in the same conditions. And because I was horrendously slow in the climbs, I got dropped A LOT and did a good portion of the ride by myself. At the time I didn't have aero bars and the wind was wicked since most of the ride was along the coast line. So, I have some experience with the bike portion conditions. RE: the swim, my first 2 OWS were in a beautiful pristine paradise beach (top 10 in world according to Discovery) in the island of Culebra. I swam for 2 hrs straight and loved it!! NOTHING like seeing beautiful corals and neon colored fish look up at you while you swim! So, I feel I have experience in those 2. BUT, I've heard the marathon is a sufferfest of mosquitoes. Not looking fwd to that one. So, if all goes well with AZ (i.e. I resolve the issues with my calf/trigger points/one-leg-shorter-than-the-other) I'll attempt COZ the following year. It will be a good practice ride for Kona---bwahahahaha! Well since the purpose is to shamelessly brag, the plate and pendant will do So what's next in your schedule for this year?

Have you read the BT and ST threads on it? Thanks for the great feedback. I've not read any of the threads on it yet, but will look into it. My primary focus is trying to boost my conditioning w/o adding more time (difficult to get stuff in now with life). Already getting up at 4am to complete most of training - seems like other people demand time during "normal" daylight time. I did read some on this and one feedback item - "yes, you can do Triathlon's on this system; however, you would be hard pressed to find a podium finisher doing it as the basis of their training.". I think everyone would agree that to get prepared for spending hours running or riding, you have to spend hours running or riding. 1hour in the saddle is never like 5 unless your have conditioned for 5 (IMO). Lynn - wonderful race report - brought tears to my eyes and I actually felt like I was there. I know the area (we have a plant in Spokane), so I could visuallize what you were going through. Yanti - yours also made me feel like I was there, but I cringed more than cried - I don't like riding in traffic. Glad you are walking after the bike issues. You both have inspired me to seriously considering a 5 mth Ironman plan and perhaps hit IMCoz in November. Would finally get a swim that I could see something besides green water. Decision to be made after Boulder 70.3 in August. I was doing the Fink 30 week Ironman plan for my half, so might not be a big stretch (Note - I've backed off because of travel / vacations, but have been doing more than my logs indicate). Been more "free" training - ride for hour / run for 40 min- 1 hour, hill work, swimming laps, but doing it all w/o monitors or measurements). Olympic tri this weekend!!! Boulder Peak to Peak, so we will see how well I've kept my base with what training I have been doing. I'm actually planing on ramping up into the tri instead of backing down (C race). |

Although my tralblazer shows my tri-activities already (stickers for each distance), the one body tat I would actually consider is the M-dot on my calf (once an ironman, always an ironman). COZ is muggy, buggy, and hot, but beautiful too. With a circular course, you would at least be assured there would be periods of favorable wind. Plus - I recall it was pretty flat and what better place to recover for a few days before returning home? |

Sounds like you want to maintain/create general conditioning while hanging on to tri-specific endurance conditioning so CFE might be good for that. You're smart, you're experienced, you're a good athlete, so you would know how to handle the load and when to back off, etc. Are you thinking of using CFE to train for an IM? I would use extreme caution in using that for a first IM. (However, it might be real fun to be a guinea pig). But it kinda sounds like you're thinking more Fink-ish or BT-ish. In any case, if you have room and opportunity in your life now for IM training, I'd say go for it. Good luck this weekend, have a blast at the race and enjoy a tough training day. |

Although my tralblazer shows my tri-activities already (stickers for each distance), the one body tat I would actually consider is the M-dot on my calf (once an ironman, always an ironman). COZ is muggy, buggy, and hot, but beautiful too. With a circular course, you would at least be assured there would be periods of favorable wind. Plus - I recall it was pretty flat and what better place to recover for a few days before returning home? YES!! the plan is to get my SCUBA certification before the race so I can recover diving. It's one of the top places in the world for diving I HATE needles. But I think I'll consider an Mdot in my ankle
