That sucks that your pool is closed.  I would how many swims are you missing?  I wouldn't bike if your lady parts hurt. Maybe run today bike tomorrow.  I wouldn't stress out too much about not getting the exact time you need this week.

Christy

Christy - Good news! The pool is only closed until Friday now, so I only miss one shorter swim this week. Phew! So, I was fretting about it for nothing. I'll just swap a swim for an extra run this week and be good!  Thanks!

Why swimming in Gulf of Mexico is so fun : )

Swam for 1 hour and 20 minutes open water in Gulf of Mexico yesterday. Swam out and back along coast line.  At the beginning of swim, saw two dolphin swimming about 50 feet off of beach, it was cool a little scary thinking about swimming with dolphins, but not something that is unusual.  So the whole swim I was just waiting for them to come up and say hi

About ten minutes before I was going to finish, out of no where a fish about two feet long (don't know what it was) comes out of nowhere and almost smashes right into me!  I think it was as surprised as I was it flips, jumps and spins then takes off.  Of course I am freaked out, I finish the swim in shear terror.  What was chasing that fish????

Swimming in Gulf sure is exciting, fun and certainly freaky.  But it does make you swim fast not knowing what is out there

That is crazy!!  I would have freaked out if a fish ran into me!  The dolphins sound cool.

Yes I officially freaked!   needed a change of shorts

Randy, Rob, I haven't swum (verb tense?) in Lake Michigan yet as part of my tri training, but luckily we don't have any of the sea 'wildlife' here in the heart of Chicago. I think I would have a panic attack. We only have roving bands of teenage thugs near our beaches to worry about [only kind of kidding... insert awkward nervous laughter here].

I have swam in Lake Michigan, you can keep the 60 degree water, I would rather fight the marine life   and you are right the thugs do hang out by Lake Michigan when I lived on LaSalle and Chicago about a mile from the 'beach' I passed many thugs

Good for you Rob!  Looking forward to hearing how your journey to the starting line goes.  I think over the next several months you will question your own sanity many times and also on race day.  BUT, it has to be an amazing feeling of accomplishment to cross the finish line.  I suspect, like so many things, you will remember how you felt at the finish much more so than the times you felt you were "crazy" for doing it.  Excited for you!

Quick question-It is in the high 90's here and there is a low air quality alert.  Am I stupid for going for a 2 hour run this evening?

Not sure that I am the appropriate person to give advice about what is stupid? If it was on my plan I would likely give it a shot.  But, I would try to do it where I was doing loops close to home/car so if I felt poorly I could bail on the run.  Also, I would slow my pace substantially.  I suspect since it is a 2 hour run it is likely an endurance run with low intensity Z1-Z2 so you will likely be going an easy pace anyway.  Bottom line, I would try it but really pay attention to how I feel-you don't want to compromise a couple of days of solid workouts just to get this one done.  Disclaimer...I often do midday runs in downtown Mobile, AL where temps and humidity are very high and air quality is not so great.

I'm going to try it.  I'll stay close to home so I can stop in and get some water if I need it.  I'll run SLOW and stop if I need to.  I'm really not looking forward to it.

I did it!!!  It was slow, and I had to walk the last 15 mins due to intestinal issues Surprised.  I was dissapointed I had to walk, but the alternative could have been ugly.

Glad it's over.

Hey all,

@Randy: Blue is a smaller company, but seem to be getting bigger. I actually first heard of them due to seeing Dirk Bockel ride on on a training ride I was apart of (he lives in St. Augustine for part of the year, and trains with some fellow club members....he's a beast).

@Rob: Best of luck in the IM. I have heard a ton of great things about the race, and if I wasn't getting married November, 5 I'd try and do that also. However, I think me doing Augusta 70.3 in September is a much more ascertainable goal.

As far as training goes. Had a great bike ride yesterday (Tuesday), and really felt the difference in speed on the bike. Today, I did a 45 min run and kept a decent speed (faster than I have been), while keeping my heart rate in Z1/Z2. Will go for another short bike tomorrow, around 75-80 minutes (hopefully), and then just a quick swim and run on Friday to keep my legs and body nice and loose. Then Saturday is a Sprint Triathlon, the same course as my race last month. It will be interesting to see how the training has progressed, and how I can apply my lessons from my first race. Granted, no races are alike, it will be interesting to see how my times compare. Best of luck in training, and all racers this past weekend.

Good morning, everyone.  I'm pretty tired from yesterday's run.  It's amazing how exhausting the heat is.  I have a 90 min bike today then a rest day tomorrow.  I've never been so happy to have a rest day.  I really wanted to get outside for my ride today, but babysitters are hard to come by in the middle of a work day.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Christy

Randy, thanks for asking about the TI training. I've only had one hour so far and several emails. Coach Bob had a USC trip/camp planned.

I am trying to apply a few tips I received in the pool. Some days I feel it, some days I don't. He mainly has me work on keeping my arms/hands on wide track, keeping my head down (almost looking backwards in pool) really reaching forward with one arm and keeping it there and inching my hip up to get even more stretch forward.

Does all this feel awkward until it becomes natural?

Awkward?  You should see me swim!

I think its like most things...it takes time/repetition before it becomes habit or second nature.  Things I can do consistently and with little effort with the pull buoy or during drills tend to only last a length or 2 when swimming.  You are doing the right thing with getting instruction.  Starting with the correct technique may be tough but will be better than trying to fix something down the road.  Keep it up!

Hey guys - sorry I've been super MIA.  Turns out I can't get cell service in my hotel so I can barely check on anything.  Luckily, I fly home tonight...to a house with no internet yet!

I know I've missed a lot but I've been able to read most of what's going on, just not reply.  But, I'm stealing a quick minute here:

@Rob - congrats on the IM!  I hope you have fun on the "journey".

@Christy - I am definitely NOT jealous of the heat back home!  Denver has been wonderful!  Hot/humid runs are tough, just make sure to prepare for them (hydrate!!!) and respect the heat (not go too hard).  You'll be fine though Bmore summers and come out stronger on the other side

@ Deb? (sorry, I forget who asked about it :/) - learning to swim is awkward!  If you ever feel like it's natural, you're probably doing something wrong!  My golf coach used to tell us it takes about 21 hours of repetition (where you have to think about it and if feels awkward) before a new motion become natural and you do it without thinking.

Lastly, I remember seeings this awhile ago, but a friend just posted one of the "rules" on her facebook and it made me smile, so I thought I'd share: http://www.velominati.com/blog/the-rules/ (it's slightly NSFW - some swearing in the text, FYI).

Obey the rules!
