Regular 231 Maryland | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED QOTD: For those of you doing the Paleo diet, where do you get calcium from if you omit dairy? Also, how hard is it to not eat grains? Do you start cold turkey omitting these things from day 1? Do you plan to sustain this indefinitely? Just curious. I checked out the original Paleo diet book from the library and purchased the Paleo for Athletes and have been reading up. Got kind of freaked out by all of the things that he was saying about grains and dairy. |

I take supplements. I'm going to see what it does to the weight, but yes, I think I will do it pretty close to ordered indefinitely. I like how I feel on it whether any weight comes off or not. I am only at 11% body fat now. I just want fewer pounds to carry on the bike if I can. I went cold turkey on Jan. 1. It was different not eating bread or grain but it's been fine.

I think it is a little harder for women to follow the plan than it is for men. My wife has been doing it with me and she seems to be having more trouble giving up the pasta and bread even though she definitely feels better when she does. I shall chalk that up to hormones I guess. |

Love those things. 3 X 10 squats, swings and presses with each arm. Then pushups, planks, side planks, medicine ball and some yoga. The swimming at masters today was pretty quick actually. Speed work. Not too shabby. All good. I've got strength exercises on the bike tonight for 70 mins. Then more running and a kettlebell work out with the instructor tomorrow. Moving right along.
I really want to try a kettle bell class. need to look into that. |

Still working on building a real run base for 2012..Going to start back on the bike and pool this week..First tri race schedule for April. Have a Half Mary at the end of this month, then the real plan kicks end in Feb. Sorry about the Steelers Ken.. Had to hear about Tebow all day....lol Hope you all have a good week..Going from temps in the 70's which is crazy in Jan. to 20's and 40s at the end of the week..Crazy weather for sure.. LOL.. Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Training question: If I'm supposed to do easy-moderate effort, should I be keeping the same pace through out? It's on a flat track, so terrain isn't the issue. When I run, I first keep it in very easy effort to "warm up" for me, that's about 5 minutes. Then I kick it up a little bit...and then after I do my walking breaks, the pace tend to be all over the place. I still have a little endurance issue, but it's getting better. Even though I had a good run today, but the pacing was NOT very consistent. I never once felt like I was going all out. Only a few laps were slightly more moderate effort, when I really should be on easy effort. Is this normal? If not, how can I keep it consistent? |

DJ, pacing is something that takes a little bit of experience and training. Conditioning also plays into this as well. You should try and take the earlier miles a little easier and work on going faster (5 - 10 seconds per mile) each subsequent mile. If you are on a track you can work on doing each lap or 800 faster rather than the mile to start. The other thing that affects pacing, at least for me, is concentration. If I get thinking about work or some other issue, I tend to slow down some. I have auto lap set on my Garmin, so when the mile buzzes, it usually brings me back to focus. Keep at it! It will get better. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Hit the pool this morning for the first time this year. Surprised how few folks were swimming. 6 lanes and only 3 swimmers at any one time. For a short while I was the only one in the pool. Considering I haven't swam in 2 weeks due to the trip west, I was fairly happy with my swim. What is every one else doing today? |

But to answer your question Vivian, you can always supplement but some of the vegitables are fairly high in calcium. Broccoli and spinach are close to milk, per serving I beleive. |

It will get better. Cyber Just a thought for you, you could use your Hr monitor as a guide and not so much as the pace. Easy to moderate I would keep HR high Zone 1 to Mid zone 2..If it goes above that then walk to get it back down, then start back into your run...It is still early in the year so this will help build your aerobic base and after doing this your pace should pick up and your HR will still be in these zones. Then as your training progresses your endurance should really improve..Just a thought. I've been really working on a true run base this year by using the method above..In the beginning I could go 10:16 min/mile pace @ 142 HR avg. 6 week later I have had runs for 45-60 min at 9:00 to 9:15 min/mile pace at 140 HR avg..and still gas in my tank.. Hope this helps you. |

I agree Ken, Tebow is a paid athlete do your job..The media just keeps a story going I guess..My previous time was 1:51:00 , so I would like to beat that time but I have also have thoughts of running with some friends that are slower and stay in my HR zone 2 to continue on my run base building.. I will be starting a 12 week program in Feb. to get ready for my first race..The first tri I'm doing this year is in April..I want to PR there..It is the place of my first tri I competed in and they usually hold the race in mid June so the temps will be much cooler than a JUne day in Georgia..2010 2:53:00 ...2011 2:41:00..So I would really like to PR and possible get to 2:30 or lower.. |

Took it slow and easy- actually a little slower than I wanted to, it felt comfortable which is good I guess. I am shooting for 9:30 pace if possible but would like to at least keep it under 10's Most of my training runs have been successful but some have felt HORRIBLE and some great. I hope saturday is a GREAT day. According to my calculations I have run 481.5 miles in training since august, 26.2 should be the easy part right? LOL I am jealous of all you guys in the pool. I sooo need to get back there, gonna give myself a week or two off then on to HIM training! Happy Weekend everyone! Paula |

Considering I haven't swam in 2 weeks due to the trip west, I was fairly happy with my swim. What is every one else doing today? Way to go, Ken! Glad you got some pool time today. Let's see, I hit the lake for a brisk OWS this morning. There was nobody in the water except for me and a few ducks and geese... go figure. It was sunny out, but the water was ridiculously cold. Before I try that again, I'm going to pick up some gloves, socks, and a cap. Brrrrrrrr. Tonight I ran 10 miles and I managed to slip under 1:30 (1:27:30). I'm stoked about that. On Tues night, I ran a 6:13 1600M time trial at my triathlon club track workout. That really surprised me too. I sure wish I could get my swim together... my first coaching session is scheduled for Monday --- woohoo! Hope everybody is doing well! |
