Unfortunately by the time my kiddos won't need me around every day, and financially I would be able to take 6 months off of work I will be too old to do it. ![]() BS on the too old part!!! An acquaintance of ours who is 72 did a through hike last year. She has horrible rheumatoid arthritis as well. REALLY??!!??!! I really would like to do it. Maybe I can do it at 50, as long as I keep moving now, keep healthy, keep fit. Who knows? THAT is the idea!!! I will have to wait until after I retire.. somewhere around 56. Then I will have so many things on my "WANT to do" list, that it is a good bet that I would be around 70 as well. Start planning now. In 10 years, we will hike the entire AT. That's what I'll do for my 50th birthday. That sounds like a good long-range plan. |

In 10 years my kiddos will be out of high school, hopefully I have a little money in the bank then, and can take 5-6 months off to hike the trail. I have read that it takes 5-6 months, but someone the other day told me they thought it only took 3-4. I will have to do some more research. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Robin, I have a plan. In 10 years at least 1 if not both of my kiddos will be in college, they will need something to do over the summer. They can help Jim with the cabins over the summer while we are hiking. That way he won't have to do all the work by himself, and it will keep them out of trouble.

I know there are some people who sort of race it from what I've read, but they have support and pacers and such. They aren't carrying their gear with them and stuff like that. If I'm going to do it I'm going to do it right, I'll hike the thing carrying my own gear. |

I have no desire to hike the whole trial, but I don't mind doing some day hikes on it. I like my comfort each night. I know, I can be your support and meet you each week to give you more supplies. I guess I better start making friends all up and down the trail so that I can sleep at people's houses and not be in a hotel for 5-6 months. Edited by kns57 2012-04-14 10:46 AM |

The way the trail is, you cross a road about every 4 miles or so. I bet my daughter would even help you, through part of it. She will be in college then, so school comes first. Sleeping in hotels wouldn't be bad, there will be some hotels, there will also be a lot of nights sleeping in a bivy sack, or on the wooden floor of the shelters that are provided along the trail. It really is something that I would like to do one day, but the timing will definitely have to be right. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My son had his first soccer game of the season this morning, it didn't go well. The other team was there to win, our guys were there to have fun. AYSO has a rule that each kid must play half the game, we heard some parents from the other team saying that their kid only played 1 quarter. They also had their better players in the entire game. Come on coach. There was a guy sitting beside me, not sure if he was the parent or grandparent of a kid on the other team. He was TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE! Our goalie had the ball one time, and the coaches were yelling at him to kick it to a certain player, so he did. He kicked it to his teammate, but the ball didn't even go to midfield, that's where his teammate was. The guy beside me was spouting off that the goalie couldn't kick the ball, they should pull that kid and put in someone better, blah blah blah. Guess who was in the goal... yep, my son. I wanted to punch him in the teeth. He yelled at the boys and told them they sucked. My nephew got hit in the junk and had to come off the field. This guy was going on that boys get hurt like that these days because they wear boxer shorts, they shouldn't wear boxers, they should wear briefs when playing sports. I'd bet everything that I have that this guy had no knowledge what the kid had on under his shorts. I bit my tongue the entire game. As soon as it was over I grabbed my chair and headed for the car. People make me mad. |

She was yelling during one of the games I was coaching last year, and at halftime I went and told her that if she didn't keep quiet the second half I'd have her removed. She doesn't know anything about soccer she had no business yelling at the girls. My parents won't sit with them at games.

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went hiking yesterday. My 8.4 mile hike turned into a 9.9 mile hike. There are 2 paths at the trailhead, one is for the AT, the other is not, I took the wrong one. I walked a little bit, then knew I wasn't in the right place. I stomped around where I was for a bit trying to figure out where the trail was, when finally I went back to the beginning and took the other path. If I'd have looked at the signs, and the map posted by the trail from the beginning I could have saved myself 1.5 miles, and about 45 minutes. It was hot out yesterday, 85 when I got home. The last 3 miles I had to make frequent stops because I was getting overheated, I could have taken a lighter pack, too, I took my SAR backpack, it is heavy. I also learned that if I really am going to do some extended hiking anytime in the future I will need to have my left knee looked it, it killed me doing any kind of downhill. The last 2 miles were tough, the last half a mile I was in a LOT of pain. When I got home I took a shower then propped my knee up with ice packs on top of and underneath of it. If I didn't have my trekking poles I never would have made it because I was in that much pain. I did learn that cycling gloves are an excellent choice when using trekking poles. They kept my hands from blistering, and absorbed the shock so my wrists did not have to. All in all I was glad I got out there. Will have to KT tape my knee the next time. |
