Oh, almost forgot... if you're looking for a good chuckle, check out Michael's response to this poll.  His response is on page 2, but it's worth reading the other responses as it sets his up nicely.

How long does it take...

Almost ruined my laptop this morning when I was drinking coffee and read it :-)

Jimmy - I can't believe that you actually fought through the issues you had. That is some crazy stuff and that is the mental toughness that I am trying to get used to. Congratulation on finishing and on the bike PR.

Blanda - Happy belated Birthday!

Thanks for everyone's encouraging words. After the race yesterday I should have taken a long nap before doing anything. I am taking a different approach this time. CONSISTENCY! Yup, i think I finally got it. :-)

I am in the process of putting a training plan together between now and my next OLY and Rene it is the Disco Tri :-). It will be the exact course from yesterday and hopefully I can take that as a measurement to see improvement over the next two months.

Weight loss challenge? ME too! I need some accountability ...... when do we start?

For those interested in the weight loss challenge-

A couple of days ago I mentioned in my blog that I want to race IMAZ at 165.  Rene sent an inspire, and asked if I wanted to do a challenge, but mentioned that she needed to do it "smart" while training.  I told her I was in.  The most important part of this is that we want to do lose weight the right way while training for races.  We are not doing this simply to lose weight, but to race faster.  We also need to maintain a healthy training load while shedding a few pounds.  This will preclude "crash" dieting, or huge caloric deficits.  My target is negative 200-300 calories a day, and that includes replacing calories burned while training, not just basal metabolic rate caloric needs.  I am reading "Racing Weight" by Matt Fitzgerald, and using concepts from the book.  It isn't rocket science and not a magic cure all, but is a good reference.

Both of our Ironmans are in November, so the timing part is easy.  Weighins are on Mondays.  You wake up, use the bathroom, and then weigh yourself.  You post your weight, progress and goal weight.  If you do not want to post your weight, that is cool, just post your progress, and how close you are to your goal.

Rene - This morning I was 180.8.  Goal weight is 165 by IMAZ.  (I knew I had to weigh in this am, and ate 3/4 of a pint of Cherry Garcia FROYO last night!)

I agree the crash diet doesn't work and is not healthy! I am going to approach it the same way i lost the last 50lbs ... calorie counting and maintaining a negative calorie count.

This morning 206.2lbs
Goal weight is 195lbs by July 15th (Disco Tri)

Eating healthy and staying away from the processed food and fast food.

My plan is to make sure to eat from ALL of the food groups at each meal. I'm also going to continue drinking a gallon of water a day and there by decreasing diet drinks. My projected daily calorie intake is around 2600. That is with a 300 calorie deficiet. Whey protein and recovery nutrition will also be factored into the plan I've gotten away from making sure that recovery nutrition was included in harder efforts. I also plan on weighing before and after exercise. This is fine tune nutrition and fluids during workouts based in sweat rates. BSLT is know for having high temperatures on race day. Not getting an IV after the race is one of my goals.

What do you guys use to calculate your daily caloric needs?  Do you find you need to adjust your calorie allowance after a few weeks? How do you know you're using the right number?

I've avoided counting calories but I think I need to start.  I'm approaching five months of the most consistent exercise I've done in my adult life but I've lost no weight.  I know I've traded some fat for muscle but, I thought I'd have dropped a few pounds at least.

Looks like I'll be doing another tri as a clyde which is intensely disappointing.

Randy - I got my first Olympic Race tomorrow morning ... my wave gets in the water at 7.10am. I am terrified and the thought of sleeping right now .... not gonna happen.

I just saw Jimmy cross the finish line at 14 hours 29 minutes. He hobbled a bit and looked exhausted but he made it!

CONGRATULATIONS JIMMY!

Thanks Michael.  Regardless of my time, it is always amazing to me when I cross the finish line!

Michael: Great words from everyone about not kicking yourself over that result. I'm pretty sure you're going to kick butt next race with all that you've learned through this one!

Rene: Loved the birthday video!! Happy song and I love Happy Feet!

Jimmy: I was all verklempt reading your race report. You are one tough sun of a gun. Congratulations on your bike PR, and way to gut out that run. That distance is tough when you're feeling good and doing it as a stand alone! Absolutely inspired by your determination. So glad you knew your body well enough to continue!

Thanks so much for the birthday wishes! I do look forward to the fun being 40 will be!!

Thanks Blanda and happy belated birthday to you!  I also want to thank you for teaching me a new word - verklempt!  I love the sound of it!  I had to look it up. I'm excited for the first time I get to use it.  I'm going to see if my son knows it as he always learns a new word everyday.

Thanks for your kind words Blanda!!!  You made me feel really good!

Catwoman - 2012-05-21 5:26 AM Jimmy, Congrats on a great race. I'm glad that you know your body well enough to know how to take care of it in the situation you were in. That had to be somewhat scary. How are you feeling today? Will you have any after effects from dehydration/physical stress of the race? Certainly there will be another alternative that will not call for full time beta blockers. I think you earned this IM title. Congrats again!! Bennet- My weight today- 130.6. Yes, I know you said I didn't have to post it! We have a race weight challenge that started today. I will weigh 122 by IMFL.

Thanks Rene!  I feel great.  I got home and took my flecainide and converted back to sinus rhythm.  My legs feel good.  I was very well trained for this race.  I feel refreshed and ready to do some short runs, easy swims and maybe a bike this weekend.  Now that the race is over, more important than my time is the fact that I finished, and this is what I will carry forward with me.  I really enjoyed cheering the other athletes on the run.  One thing I gain from having to walk is meeting others, learning their stories, and enjoying watching people pursue their dreams.

I appreciate your support for this race!!

I'm going to meet with my Cardiologist next month and chat.

Next IM is Arizona!!  I'm already getting excited!!!  Jim

Jimmy: That word is one from an old TV show that I wish I could remember now! I loved it and the way that word was used. Glad you enjoyed it too!!

Rene: I have been focusing on eating healthy lately (since my birthday, haha!). I just bought a ton of mangoes and strawberries on sale. Cut them up and froze them in little baggies for smoothies. I added shredded carrots and spinach in them. My biggest problem is that if I don't prep to eat well, I'll look for what's quick and easy out on the road. I'm hoping I can develop better eating habits!

I'm game for a weight reduction challenge!

I love the guy that runs the bike store here. He doesn't let me make excuses for anything and scolds me when I slack on my training. Told him I'd be able to ride in the races in August when husband gets home and he gave me the biggest eyeroll, haha!

He's right. My biggest problem is asking for help with the kids. I cannot seem to bring myself to ask for it unless it's something huge, and even then, I make sure to space out the times I ask. I know family AND friends will watch the kids if they can, but I don't know why I feels so bad letting people help me!

Hey gang-fun evening here at the Chrissie Wellington book signing.  She spoke for about 20 minutes recounting her background and unlikely journey into triathlons.  She then took 5-6 questions and began signing books.  There was a big turnout at our small local bookstore.  I was about 10th in line and was able to get my book signed and have a picture taken with Chrissie.  She seems to genuinely enjoy meeting people and sharing her experiences. Looking forward to reading the book.  Will try to post the picture once I download from the camera.

Spent a long weekend in Portland, Maine.... here's where I got my run in on Saturday, it was a beautiful day -- made it easy to get out there and run.

Michael and Jimmy, congrats on finishing your races.  Appreciate what you're able to accomplish. Most people don't do this much in their entire lives.

I, too, need to get down to race weight. Not sure what that magic number is, but I've actually gained a lot of weight (about 6 pounds) over the past three months, but the strange thing is, I have no idea where it is! All of my clothes still fit fine, in fact most of my pants are loose. Still, it seems like too much weight to be added muscle. Regardless, I want to get faster, particularly in the run, so I need to focus on better fuel and much, much less pizza and ice cream.

Blanda, happy 40th!

Jen -- great picture, and even better running!

I'm going to join the weight loss challenge, even though I have an unfair advantage (I don't feel like eating!).  I'd like to lose about 8lbs before IMWI in Sept.  I'll post progress on Mondays, as per the rules!

Randy -- very cool about the book signing.  She is one pro that I'd really like to meet.

Count me in on the weight loss challenge.  199.4 this morning.  Goal is 190 for Culpeper Olympic at the beginning of August.  Lots of potholes are lurking during that span, so it will be good to be accountable to the group.

been following the thread of comments here, but i haven't had much to say.  congrats in general to all that have been completing races. just hearing about all the races you all do is inspiring.  nice to hear personal viewpoints beyond the general descriptions of races. thanks for sharing.

me, i still am struggling to figure out good time management to get everything done each day that I want to.  i kept pushing off running days because other things came up and since i am still getting into liking running, it was easy to not do it.  I went running a couple of weeks ago with my sister while we were at a cousin's wedding at Half Moon Bay, California.  Gorgeous trail by the water.  But I realized that not getting any running in the last couple of months was a bad idea. i felt slow and easily out of breath

it helps logging in a scheduled workout plan on the logs on here, makes me more inclined to do it. i am not a morning person, but i am thinking i should start working out in the morning.  you all seem to do morning and evening workouts anyway, is it better?

Time management is always an issue.  I often struggle getting up in the morning for early workout and am not always successful.  For me, I find myself with a day's goal eg. s/b/r but I often don't know when or sometimes where I will be doing this.  The key for me is to be prepared, keep a workout bag, swimsuit, etc. in my car so it's ready to go anytime an opportunity arises.  I shuffle my long workouts for days/wkends I know I have off.  If I miss a workout, I usually just move on and not try to make it up as it will effect me worse in the long run.

i kept pushing off running days because other things came up and since i am still getting into liking running

I am finding that the more running I do, the more I enjoy it.  I have been logging 100+ miles a month since the beginning of the year, and I'm now finding running more enjoyable.  Look at Jason's logs, he has an impressive streak of 100+ mile months!  Sometimes those days I least want to run are the days where something suddenly clicks after the first mile or so and then it becomes one of my better runs.  I try to remember this on those days where it seems more a chore to get started.

Keep at it, it will become more likable, especially when you see steady improvements!!!

Michele: If I could get myself to wake up in the morning early enough, I'd do as much as I could to get it out of the way for the day. Something I'm going to work on when the husband gets back.

As for liking running, I only really like it while I'm doing it when it feels good. For me it only starts to feel good when I consistently running. I try to get at least 15-20 miles a week to keep it feeling good. When I'm not consistent, it's much harder to enjoy it, but I'm always glad I did it in the end.

I feel you! It's hard to get it all in and do life too. Give the mornings a try! I've only heard good things about it even if folks are groggy to start. It's done, you don't have to break up your day to do your stuff.

I'm in on the challenge. 139.6 today. My goal is a lean 130 by July, the start of 1/2 and full marathon training. I want to start training fit for once, ha!

I have always worked out. I will tell you that hiring a coach took my consistency to a whole new level. It really changes things when you know someone is looking at your training log every day and will bring it to your attention if you start to miss workouts or slack off. Even without at coach, I think one of the keys is to have a plan. If you know that you need to get in a specific workout on a given day I think it is much easier to do it than if you just think, "I should get a workout in." I have trained all three ways; whatever on whatever day, following a plan, having a coach create a plan. Each level you step up increases your accountability to yourself and possibly to others.

The running does get more fun. The more you run, the more fun it gets. The secret is to make every run enjoyable. Too many people feel like they have to run fast when they are starting out. Then it hurts, you feel out of breath, the next day you are sore and there is really very little positive feedback to run again. If instead, you run easy, at an enjoyable pace and just do it day after day it really does get to be fun. Logging your miles here and watching the mileage grow and your pace change over time (sometimes a very long time-think years) is pretty neat. I run my easy runs at a pace that six years ago would have been my 5k race pace. It is hard to see that change from day to day but the logs show it over time.

Three weeks of getting out of bed at 4:30 most days. I am not sure it will ever be fun to do this but I am committed to my goals and this is what I am having to do.

Weight loss. I lost about eight pounds training for my IM last year without trying at all. By the scale I would love to drop about five more pounds but by the mirror test I am getting to where I don't want to get much thinner. My legs are definitely much thicker and more defined than ever in my life. I suspect that I am carrying a little more weight there than I used to but it is good weight I think. I don't calculate out anything as far as calories. I eat when I am hungry and I refuse to eat when I am not. I always ask myself, "am I hungry?" and if the answer is no, then I don't put it in my mouth. Lots of fruits and vegetables and lean meats. A few candy bars and cookies too

Lastly. I had a swim lesson with an Olympic trials qualifier today (she also happens to be my daughters swim coach) and she changed a lot of things in my stroke. I am looking forward to working on this to see if I can make some inroads in to dropping my swim pace so I am not coming out of the water so far behind the frontrunners. It was pretty cool and I definitely felt the difference by the end of the lesson.

Novel over.

Michele, Most of us who workout twice a day have been in the sport for a while.

I love getting up early in the morning and getting a workout in. If you need tips on how to get organized let me know. After training for a few IM's we've got it down to a science at our house! Well most days we do! lol..

2 more days until school is out for the summer! Yipee!!! Guess I need to go to work!

Hey everyone-had a bit of a PR in the pool today.  At the end of the workout I was to do a 100(scy) for time. Came in at 1:16-17.  Previously I had been stuck at 1:19.  I may never do any better but it was nice to see improvement even if just on a single 100.  Not sure how significant this is as it is unlikely that I could have continued the pace for another 5-10 yards.  However, over the last 25 yards when I was going all out I could feel a big difference in the way I was moving through the water.....may even go so far as to call it swimming   Now to break 1:15.....may take another year or so.

Thanks to everyone for the tv and movie suggestions for trainer entertainment.  Have added the first season of The Wire to my Netflix queue.

Started reading the Chrissie Wellington book and am enjoying it.  After hearing her talk at the signing and reading the book it is clear to me that she wrote the book.  I know sometimes athletes and others will have people write/ghost write for them but her writing mimics the way she expressed herself in person. Very genuine. No doubt she is VERY intelligent and would likely have excelled at any challenge whether athletic or career oriented.
