DeVinci13 - 2013-01-21 10:40 PM Day time high -31C, with the windchill it will feel like -41C. Tuesday is my long run outdoors. Scheduled for 13 miles. I will be heading to the track to run around in circles 200m at a time instead of running outside. This morning it was -44C with the windchill when I got up at 5:15am for my morning master's swim. It was a bit chilly coming out of pool building. The joys of living and training in the Great White North.

But you did the work so you will be rewarded this summer when its race time!  Good work!

Headed out the door for my root canal - yeah. I was able to get my 45 minute run in early before the kids were up so good for today.  I hope I can be back at it tomorrow.

I've been AWOL for a few days, just busy with family stuff & such. So after a good start to the week last week, I didn't work out all weekend AND didn't go to the pool at at all last week. Granted I still have a couple weeks before my official training program starts, but I'm a little disappointed with myself. Shaking it off and got up early this am & am headed to the pool this afternoon.

Campground reservations opened up this morning for HIM Kansas, so I went ahead & reserved a spot even though I still haven't decided on the race.

Come on Ken, do you really expect us to feel bad about your running conditions this week?? Can't you run on the beach?!? Like others here, it's about -10F with the wind chill here, now those are dangerous running conditions! Granted, cars driving on the sidewalk does sound scary!!

Purchases this year....trainer, garmin, new seat... so far, I'm sure the list will get bigger.

Hope everyone is having a good start to the week!

No, I don't!  I found a couple of other runners this morning at breakfast and they told me where to go tomorrow.  Not great but not bad.

I hope you get back in the routine!  But, a little distraction in January is ok.

-44 C ?????   That sounds like drinking coffee in bed weather to me!  This group makes me feel like a whiner!

I took an unplanned day off yesterday, but I think I needed it.  Getting a little nervous about my half marathon at the end of February, as my longest run so far has been only 7 miles!   I don't care how fast I run it as long as I don't end up injured.  So far so good.  I think if I get my long run up to 10-11 miles I ought to be fine, right?

Yes you'll be fine. I've done one or two 10 milers before my half-marathons, and I was fine. I don't like LONG runs! Just make sure that after you do your 10-11 milers that you FEEL like you can go more. If it's "yes", then you did well. If no, then you went too hard. :-P Take care of yourself for recovery after running. Ice baths works wonders for me. YMMV. Good luck!! YOU CAN DO IT!!

My longest runs were that length for the 2 HM's I have done - would it have been nice to get some longer runs in? - sure, but if there is the potential of injury then no.

Made it through the dentist - the numbing meds have worn off and I am still kickin' - so I am hopeful that the worst is over!

Yes, you will be fine with those long runs.  I think, more importantly, that you get consistently doing 4 to 5 runs a week.  Even if your week day runs are only 3 or 4 miles the cumulative training stress will help you get through your race feeling good, or as good as you can feel at the end of a HM.

Good luck!

Make it count Ken!!!  get that run in and hit those umbrella drinks!

Planning on a shorter trainer ride tonight 1.5hr tempo ride.  2x40'  My 3x40' didn't go so well Sunday so not sure how tough this is going to be.  I've been pretty burned out lately.

Back from a long same day trip which drains me out. I headed to Richmond 4.5 hours away, have a meeting and dinner until 10 or so and then head home. get home at 3 am and wake up at 6 am in order to get the kids ready and dropped off. Makes for a long two day and drains me out. Basically two days off from workouts, but will get back on it today. It has been miserably cold and running outside will not be an option tonight, but treadmill in my pain cave will be just fine.

I have a few questions for the group

What type of supplements do you take? daily? before and or after workout etc? I take a multi vitamin in the morning, and sometimes take protein shake after a workout but that is it.

How do you approach night workouts. Say 8 PM start? do you have dinner at a certain time and do you take anything after the workout.. I am concerned about taking something that will keep me awake.

Was up early for Pilates at 5:30am. I was going to do a quick run before, so I set my alarm for 4:45, but I just couldn't do it. I know it sounds silly, but getting up at 5am, is my "happy place", I just don't like getting up before unless its for a race or a trip! I was headed back home after dropping off the kids the sun is shinning & thought "maybe I'll run outside", then I looked at the temp, it's only 14. I'll give it another hour or so & see if it warms up, if not I'll head to the gym to run & do some strength training.

Yesterday afternoon I made it to the pool & what a difference new googles make!! It was time, when I put on my old ones they kept fogging over & leaking, & evidently were scratched too, because WOW, these seem so clear.

I don't take any supplements other than a multivitamin (the gummy kind because I'm such a wimp!). I got a free 5 pack sample of Biestmilch (what Macca takes), when he was giving it away on his website a while back, but I haven't tried it yet.

As for my approach to evening workouts....avoid them at all costs!! Sorry can't help with that one. I know come summer when the kids are out of school, I'll have to do some, so I'd be interested in what others have to say.

Ken, have a safe trip back! I hope you were able to take full advantage of the sun, surf, & drinks!

I did 11 miles yesterday, indoors at the track, 73 laps. I did one mile at 6:18. The over all pace was 7:08/mile. Up at 5:15am for 1 hour master's swim today. This morning it was only -40C with the windchill (-25C air temp). Guitar lessons tonight then another track session on Thursday. I am going to the doctor on Thursday, I have a mole on my clavicle that is being removed and biopsied. I may have to miss Friday's swim due to the stitches and it being right on the clavicle, might make swimming difficult. 28 days in a row with triathlon training without missing a days workout will be in jeopardy.

As far as supplements go I use 500mg Vitamin C, 500mg Vitamin D, Multivitimin + minerals, 2xCalcium 600mg (breakfast/supper), 2xglucosamine 500 mg (breakfast/supper). I drink plain water for all my activities under 2 hours. After a workout I dissolve 30g of protein powder in a glass of 2% chocolate milk. I eat protein at every meal, and my snacks are fruits and veggies (usually just carrots). I don't really consume calories or carbs in liquid or gel form, I prefer to eat my calories.

In the morning before my 6:00 am swim I eat breakfast. Typically a bowl of cereal, cup of milk, cup of OJ and a hardboiled egg. My typical afterwork workouts are usually 5:30 or 6:00 pm starts so I head right there after work and eat immediately when I get home to take advantage of the 2 hour refuel window. Then I shower and head to bed. I get 8+ hours of sleep every night. I find this is very important for me.

I take a multivitamin and a fish oil supplement when I remember.  For after workouts occasionally a protein shake or milk if I don't plan on eating a meal.  If I am working out late (usually that means around 6-7 start). I eat a really light meal Like yogurt and a banana at least a 1/2 hour before and then plan on eating something a little more after.  I find if I eat any big meal before exercising it stays with me and makes me feel bad. Exercising late keeps me awake later no matter what- I guess it is those dang endorphins.

I've hit a few bumps in the road this week, too, lots of shifts, and now my gym's pool has a broken pump and is closed!  Grrrrr.  When my plans get disturbed sometimes I get completely derailed.  Need to work on that.  It's not like missing a swim at this point in the season is going to make ANY difference!  So I'll probably do a sufferfest video today on the trainer, and some core strength.

As far as supplements go I don't take much, unless you count the 2 cups of coffee.  I try to take fish oil regularly, but don't remember to very often.  I try to eat at least 5 servings of fruit/veggies a day.

No daily supplements for me.  I like to eat good enough to get the nutrients I need that way.

After short workouts, anything und 2 hours, I take nothing.  I do eat something that would have a 4/1 carb to proteing ratio or have a small glass of organic chocolate milk.  While dieting right now I don't do anything until over 3 hours.  Over 3 hours I mix up a blueberry/strawberry smoothie with some protein powder.

Night workouts I kinda feel out.  I can't workout while hungry.  So if I feel hunger, I'll eat a spoonful of natural peanut butter, then work out.  I'll eat dinner after workout then.  I'd prefer to eat dinner first and wait 1/2 hour then workout, but time isn't always on my side.  I've never had any issues taking something and not being able to sleep.  Ocassionally I have issues sleeping.  BUt for the most part I can pound a Venti Starbucks and fall asleep in a few minutes.

I take Vitamin D and fish oil. Not sure exactly how much. For evening workouts I don't eat until after, but that's just my schedule. Now (today makes day 3) I take in so many calories it doesn't really matter when I eat. In the mornings, workout or not, I've been making a 700-850 calories "shake/smoothie" that taste rather disgusting, but they're extra calories and good nutrients.

I have a consistently bad knee. Grinds/cracks when I crouch and sometimes on the bike. Anyone have any experiences with supplements to help lubricate joints. I've heard fish oil and glucosamine, but would like someone's thoughts.

LOL!   At least I'm not alone!  My wife hates me for it.  If she works out before bed she gets amped up and can't sleep.  Not sure what's up, but I shouldn't complain.  I also don't need much sleep.  I function fine on very little.  Until recently I thought I was normal only sleeping a max of 6 hours/night.  I was shocked to hear about people who can't function on that at all!  I mostly get 4-5 hours a night.  Four is pushing it some but I really don't have any ill effects from not sleeping much.  I've found out some friends can barely function if they don't get 7-8

Maybe its related to the coffee thing, because I'm the same. It doesn't really matter how much sleep I get I'm pretty much always the same...pending I have a cup of coffee within 2 hours of waking up.
