I suppose I should check in with the group while I'm here! Life's been...weird, lately. The job situation sucks A LOT, for so many different reasons, and that's got me feeling out of sorts. I skipped two runs last week (on Friday and Saturday) because I just didn't want to get up off my couch. I'm not beating myself up over it, but I can't let that become a habit, and I need to remind myself that even if it seems like more energy than I've got to get out and run, I will feel a million times better for having done it (wow, that was a convoluted sentence).

That being said, I'm giving serious thought to skipping the marathon I'd been considering this summer, and focusing instead on just running for the sake of running for a few months (with a couple of sprint tris and short-distance road races thrown in, of course). Things are just so crazy right now, and the idea of tackling a marathon training plan seems rather overwhelming. But after talking it over with a friend last night, I'm going to give myself until the end of the month to decide what to do about the race.

Just a quick run through my playlists... "Can't Find My Way Home" (Blind Faith) "Still the Same" and "Night Moves" (Bob Seger) "Simple Man" and "Free Bird" (Lynyrd Skynyrd) "Dream On" and "Angel" (Aerosmith) "Stairway to Heaven" and "Kashmir" and "Going to California" (Led Zeppelin) "Walk on the Wild Side" (Lou Reed) "Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd) "Stuck in the Middle with You" (Stealers Wheel) "The Joker" (Steve Miller Band) "All Along the Watchtower" (Jimi Hendrix) Do The Eagles and Don Henley count as classic rock? It's kind of a tough genre, actually. Like, does Bob Dylan belong in there? I'm a huge Dylan fan, but I probably wouldn't label his stuff classic rock. I probably would put some stuff by Guns n Roses in there, but they're obviously after the typical classic rock period. And then there's stuff like Supertramp and Fleetwood Mac that seems too "pop" to call classic rock, but maybe fits?

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Great list Erin....I forgot that my version of "Classic Rock" and most all of the other Manatees' version is probably different by about 15-20 years.  I graduated high school in 71...yes 1971 Beth...not 1871 so I was already married with multiple children when the Big-Haired 80's bands were just getting going.

This is a great list.....This is just what I am looking for...I would have never remembered Stealers Wheel and Blind Faith.  Steve Miller and Lynard Skynyrd on the other hand are some of my all time favorites...that is until a radio station hear in Atl. has a policy that they have to play the Eagles, Skynryd and S. Miller at least 3 times per hour...EACH.....OMG.  But theothers are great and thanks Erin.

I think you are wise to give the marathon training a hard look.  With job situations like they are right now and the stress that places on people a marathon program is a tough task to start unless you are 100% sure.  I know you will make the right call.

Steve

I'll have to think about the playlists

i find i run better to slower music.............sort of wierd i suppose, i think it's because i don't feel like i have to keep pace with the music, and it helps me to breathe

here are some artists that i seem to have my best runs (hmmmm that doesn't sound right )

  • Goo Goo Dolls
  • Matchbox Twenty
  • Dashboard Confessional
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Five for Fighting
  • Blue October
  • Switchfoot
  • Cake

not really 'classic' rock, but it doesn't hurt to try something new right?

it's funny, i really haven't put any of my classic favorites on my ipod...............hmmmmmm

i seem to do better when i listen to an 'album', i like knowing which song is coming next

I have to have upbeat stuff for the most part.  I have a few things that are slower but if they hit at the wrong time during a run then I'm hittin' fast forward.

I am very cool with new stuff.  These^^^ are some of the things I have already.  I also like Coldplay, etc...and I LOVE Nickleback..."I wanna be a Rock Star" etc.  The girl who loaded my iPod loaded this type of music and I love it but I like to also revert to my classic rock days and she thinks "Classic" means something from the 90's...poor thing...bless her heart.

I feel your pain...so to speak.  I have issues with life getting in the way too.  The idea of running was not appealing the last week.  The two weeks before life got too busy.  Like Steve, I get tired of listening to me when I run.  I want to dissacociate and usual can but lately due to frustration I can't get Tweedledee and Tweedledum from work out of my head.  arghhh!!!!

How do other's deal with this?  How do you stop letting life get in the way?  In my case, how do I stop giving up my time set aside during the day to students who want to "talk"?

I call my Tweedledee and Tweedledum "my squirrels." Sometimes they have a cage match with a feather and only the one holding the feather can talk, but they keep snatching it from each other!

Ahem.

Boy, I can really relate to students who want to "talk" ... when I taught at SC I also supervised a bunch of instructors who would need to "talk" about their students, too ..... ARGH!

That means you are a very dedicated, helpful, outstanding instructor!

But taking the time for yourself will make you even more so. I'm kind of terrible at this, but really SCHEDULE IN your workout times and stick to your office hours. If a student comes in with say 5 minutes to go, explain you're happy to see them, but have another appointment you need to leave for immediately afterward (maybe they can e-mail you if they feel they need more time). And it's true, and it's a very important appointment--with yourself!

Hi Manatees!

Sorry I have been such a slackard in checking in - work has gotten crazy busy, and to be honest, i have my own Tweedledee and Tweedledum - they decided to visit me last week - i spent way too much time squirrel caging (that's what i call it when i can't turn my brain off at night and the same thoughts go 'round and 'round)

Amy - sounds like you ended up having a good experience at the clinic.  my only experience with a tri club was back in omaha - i can't say i belonged long enough to say one way or another.  i did attend a tri clinic though and it was awesome

Steve - thanks for getting the conversation going about playlists - great song ideas!  also CONGRATS on your awesome swim volume this month - what do you mean you didn't mention it in the thread?

Suzie - i wish i had the answer to give tweedledee and tweedledum the boot. i do know that generally speaking, if i let them get in the way of my training (which i have certainly done), the longer i let them interfere, the louder their voices become.  a couple of things i try to do to drown out the voices, i try and redirect and really 'see' the sights on a bike or a run.  i also find it helpful to think about the people i *know* on BT.  i try and incorporate tips someone has given me, think about tips someone has requested from me and how to answer, and last but not least, to send positive vibes to someone else going through a tough time - it doesn't always work, but it helps

Ronen - Awesome race!

Erin - i hope things are going smoother at work - hang in there!

Hi mantees! It has been so quiet in here! I have been busy, but the training is going pretty well, actually. Around here, the elementary school students  are ona year-round school schedule, which is to say that they are in school for 9-12 weeks, then out of school for 3 weeks. No long summer vacations. My youngest is on this lovely shool schedule, so it seems that everytime I finally get to where I'm in a groove and am able to start advancing my training much, he goes "off track" and I am stuck with trying to figure out how to train with a 6 year old in tow and a gym daycare that is only open a few hours each day. This usually coincides with my husband being out of town for business. Alas, it happened again this month, but I have really been doing better sticking to the plan. I am feeling very proud of myself for that. As a matter of fact, I am off to my parent's house to try to fit in the other couple miles I didn't get in while the boy and I were at the park today.

I asked the question about the tri clubs because I have been a member of one of our local clubs for a little over a year, and I feel like I have gotten a lot out of it. They are really good about scheduling both classroom and hands-on clinics covering everything from indoor swimming, open water swimming, bike maintenance, bike fitting, nutrition, to running form. Add to that the online forum, and the calendar they put together of local races, plus the one family-oriented sprint they put on each summer and the many weekly group workouts, and I can't imagine my tri life without it. I just hope that others have the same great opportunity that I have been blessed with.

How is everyone else doing this week? Staying pretty busy?

Gota good swim intoday, even though I didn't have a specific workout planned. 1700 yards is a long time to be making stuff up! Today's focus was getting the elbow up high and keeping the fingertips low. I noticed whenI do that though I am less liely to be breathing to my left side. One thing at a time, right?

I have been on Spring Break.  It's amazing.  I have only been able to enjoy 3 breaks due to my involvement with athletics for all these years. I took a few days to go enjoy the Texas Hill country.  It was fun.  Hiking up and down some slopes.  Jumping and climbing on rocks.   I have been working out a little to maintain a realm of fitness.  I am getting back in to the swing of things.  Tomorrow, the plan is to ride.

Not as far as this guy goes.  I coach High SChool baseball and the season has started and I have had a situation with my MIL that shows no end in sight.  She is terminal, in Hospice and the Dr.s have told us that "she will not make it through the weekend"....they have said that quote for 3 WEEKS.  So it has been kind of crazy here....truth be be told...I have had plenty of time to train but haven't had the energy or the motivation...mainly the latter

I have had to cancell one of the races I was looking forward to (Chattanooga Oly.)  Very cool race, I have been told, but I just don't have the $$$ to make it happen.  Fellow Manatee Susan also cancelled this race.

I have been slack on the inspires as well, which is not like me, but hey when you are in a group with Beth and Yanti there is going to be some Inspires thrown around.

Hope everyone is doing well and I hope to get back to training this week and I WILL get back to inspiring ASAP.
