First race of the season is in the books.  GSV 1/2 marathon, 2:18:30.  Great time (for me) considering it is the first time I went over 10 miles this year.  Looks like the extra training this winter is paying off.

INCREDIBLE TIME, and especially considering the first over 10!

CONGRATULATIONS ART!!!!!

Make sure you post a linkie to your Race Report! That goes for all of you--I'm terrible about hunting down RRs but pretty good if someone posts a link here.

Dineen did great. I hope she reports in soon.

Mia--super job with improving your swimming and gliding. That WILL help with freestyle. Getting a good feel for the water, overall, is quite important.

Great job Art!  I beat you, my time was 2:15:38.  Oh, wait, you ran almost 4 more miles than I did in that time.  Doh!  In all seriousness, that's awesome.  I somehow missed that you had a race this weekend.  Do post a race report when you get a chance!

I did, in fact, complete my 15K this morning.  Your wish is my command, Yanti:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=203002

I will have pix later tonight. (Pix uploaded).  It was fast for me, that 2:15:38, as that's a 14:34 average for a LOT of miles.  My biggest regret, though, is that I did not go for a post-race swim.  I think it would have felt great.  I was trying to get home for a kid birthday party (not my kid, but a close enough friend that I didn't want to blow it off and my family was there waiting for me).  I wish I had just done it, though, as instead I spent over an hour trying to get out of a parking garage and off of Clearwater Beach.  Beautiful, beautiful course, though (Next year, Lynn?) and I got through it all.  That's all that matters to me -- it was about pushing myself more than any particular time.  The only concern is that I had some numbness issues in my right leg for about three miles -- three miles of pins-n-needles.  After three miles, circulation suddenly decided to re-find my right leg, thankfully.  Not sure what, if anything, I should do about it.  Just weird!

Adding a pic.  Before:

And after:
After

OK, I actually had to go back and check Weather.com on this because I knew it wasn't that bad.  The 80 degrees was truly what the temp was when I was driving away from Clearwater (according to my car dash thermometer, in any event) but it was chillier at the start.  According to Weather.com, It started out around 65 and heated up over the course of the two hours and change.  So not quite that impressive, but yes, it was warm out.  It's Florida!  I wish the RR form had temp at start and temp at finish, or at least let me fill a range (wouldn't allow more than three digits).  I am going to suggest that.  But still, I get your drift -- and thank you.

I think you did a great race Dineen. 15K is impressive to me, the longest race I have done is 10K and I'm beat by that time.

Warning: Whining Ahead

Maybe I was getting a little ahead of myself with the grad school + 2 jobs + training idea. It was a bit tough but doable in the beginning of the term... then the papers and exams started rolling in. I'm having serious trouble getting in consistent time. More and more often, either work or school gets directly in the way, or I'm choosing between working out or getting more than 5 hours of sleep. HTFU seems kind of stupid in that light, honestly. It doesn't help that the time available to run and swim is specifically limited and frequently overlapped by work and class.

It might get better, or worse, in May. One of my jobs may or may not disappear (so, I might get a hole in my bank balance, but I might also have 10 more hours of free time!). I'm taking fewer classes in the summer, but I'm also starting clinical practicum (same idea as "rotations" for a med student), so I can't say for sure whether I'll actually have less schoolwork.

I really don't know if trying to do a race this year is a good goal. Maybe I just do not have the time to prepare for one. I don't intend to quit working out entirely, but all of the above is why I still haven't signed up for a race...

I imagine, perhaps rightly or wrongly, that there would be late-season tris with spots still open. So it's not a decision you have to make right away. Another possible way to think about it is to do a tri just to participate, not race. Keep it fun. Keep it light. Bike/run/swim when you can (I call it the JFT philosophy--Just Effen Train). Combine a swim with a water run to save time. I forgot, do you use bike shoes? If not, run for a few minutes off the bike, every time. If you're not training to race, literally, a few minutes here and there makes a huge difference. Run in place, in your home. Get the world's cheapest stationary. (Wait--did we discuss that a few pages back? or was that with Melyssa? Brain, holes, here).

Any chance you can bike commute anywhere?

Can you wear good shoes and walk briskly at times during the day for 5-10 minutes?

By the way, we seriously need to play Scrabble. www.isc.ro has an excellent app and is a very traditional interface.

Yanti, I think JFT is my new motto!

Rebecca, I get how crazy busy life is, truly.  Two thoughts:  (1) if you signed up for a race, you would perhaps have more incentive to squeeze it in somehow.  (2) If your goal is just finish and have fun, you can totally do that without (a) training every day or (b) logging insane workouts.  Here's where the weather gets good and the opportunities increase.

Got back in the pool today, after practically two weeks out of it.  Glad I did.  Tomorrow I have my first OWS session, with a coach.  I am terrified!

Sweet! Great job. And good luck tomorrow--it'll be wonderful and incredibly confidence-building and helpful and all that good stuff.

Hey, if all else fails, hang on to the coach for dear life. Hee hee.

Thanks for the headpats, y'all, I'm back to my senses today. Sorry about that.

So, assuming training will be intermittent-ish (3-5 days a week), would August be too early to shoot for? Lots of people on my state board are recommending a particular August race that's about an hour from me.

Yanti, if we can find a time to cram it in somewhere. I am TOTALLY DOWN for Scrabble. I believe you're 11 hours ahead of me, so we'd have to play when it's either early morning or late night for one of us, I think. (Also down for Scrabble with anyone else! I can rustle up my old Yahoo account, certainly, or sign up wherever.)

Happy training, all

I absolutely think you can be ready to complete a sprint on 3-5 days a week given the base you have so far, especially if you make those quality workouts.   And I am frankly ready now -- between now and the end of the month is just about improving, not OMGcanIsurvivethis.  THe way I've approached it is to get in a place where I can regularly do the distance for the run, and do 3 miles or more 2 days a week for maintaining general cardio fitness.  I generally only bike once a week, for an hour, at spin class.  I swim 1-2 days a week.  Is this ideal?  Probably not, but it's enough to have balance in my life and not be last.  (My next goal:  Spin+Swim together, 45 min of each.  Wouldn't that be nice!).  Based upon general cardio fitness from longer runs and 1 hour a week of spin, I was able to complete both the 4 hour spin a thon and the 3 hour, 38 miler on my bike.  Neither was fast, neither was full effort the whole way by any means, but my point is, if you're building enough base you will be able to push yourself on race day.  That's 4 months from now!  Plus, you have your trainer -- so you only have to get out for swims and runs.  You can cycle in front of the boob tube when you can't bear to study any more.

Shoot, this weekend would be fine to shoot for. But, barring that, August is fine

I actually think I'm 12 hours ahead. You ever free in the morning?

Today I ran for 26 min and 4,3 K. It was a great run, felt good and I was suprised that it was 4,3K.
My race on Sunday will probably give me a PB on 5K. Cool

So I no need to be talked off the ledge about swimming.  I did my first OWS today and it was HARD.  So hard.  Depressingly hard.  I am not sure I can do this in a race hard.  Bleh.

Give yourself some credit -- OWS is VERY different from pool swimming. Remember how hard swim workouts used to be when you first started? It's gonna be the same kinda process getting used to OWS. You can do it -- look at all the other stuff you've done, you really can do this one too

Thanks y'all.

Tomorrow I have my day off from work and what better day is there to do a triathlon?
So, tomorrow I'm going to try it at the gym, 25 min swim, 35 min bike (indoor) and 20 min run (outdoor).
I'll tell you how it felt and how I did.

Edit:

I just found some photos from the Edneyville Spring Fling 5K. If you want to see them look in my album.

Good job, Mia!

Starting to think more about bricks and transition.  Tonight I rode my bike to/from a "jewelry party" (no offense if anyone sells this stuff, but ugh, I can't stand multi level marketing sales!) and on the way out, I practiced running my bike to the street from the front porch (over grass) and jumping on it and clipping in.  That felt good.

Tomorrow I am going to take the eeaaaarly spin class (7:15) and then run out the front door of the Y to the soccer fields down the road, to meet DH and the kiddos for 9 am practice/games.  Then DH will take the Garmin and go for his run while I kid wrangle.  Should be fun.

Thank you both. Yes it is. I did my own little race at the gym, so not a real race but a practice one.
I swam for 750 m first and then rode the stationary bike for 12.4 miles and the I ran for 3.24K (I know not a full 5K, but still...)

I will be ready now for a real race in 4 weeks from now. Just have to find one to sign up for. :-)
