wmcgee62 - 2010-04-24 8:46 PM Hello everyone. I made my 5K today and beat my training time by 7 full minutes. Still slow tortoise but I will take it.  It was a little hilly but not bad and I finish with a smile on my face, sweat on my brow and hunger for the next one in my heart.  I want to drop my time by another 10  to 12 minutes before the season is over. I believe as the weight drops so will my time. I believe as I get back into biking hard again it will melt away as long as I leave the table a little hungry.
I am glad the blog worked for you. You know I will be checking it regularly.  Anyone tracking the Ironman Africa tonight/tomorrow?

ironannekidd - 2010-04-26 6:05 AM Good morning everyone!

How did the racer's do this weekend?

First tri of my season went really well, despite some pretty nasty weather on the bike leg. I met Ryan and another BTer named Laura! Ryan kicked major butt out there. I have not had time to work on race report but will do so later today.

Can't wait to hear all about it!

Did my first tri of the season sat.  I almost drowned last year in the swim at this same race, so I thought I had trained well.  I've been swimming like crazy and have absolutely NO problems swimming 1500 yrds at the pool.  I even purposely blow my heart rate up and then bring it back down without having to stop to simulate what i figured Id do in the race.

So sat water ends up being 65, and there are only about a dozen of us without wetsuits.  We take off, about 50 yrds out im already out of the machine and starting to find my pace.  I pick it up alittle and by 100 I relize my HR is coming up despite my efforts.  I just couldnt get enough air in!! at 200 yrds, I roll onto my back and see a boat cruising along pulling people outta the water.  I rest for a min, and then crawl the last 200.  Absolutely destroyed that my training seemed to have NO impact from last yr.
T1 went fast, I past at least 10 people.
Bike/run course switched from last yr.  I was planning on a flat ride, and a hard 1.25 mile sprint strait up iron mountain.  So, right out the gate I pounded out the first 1.25 up hill on the bike, passing 12 or so.  Unfortunetely the climb continued for 7 miles.  I slowed up but only got past by a couple of guys.  Averaged 36 on the way back down!  Maxed at 44 mph!!  Serious Hills!
T2 was fast.
Run..........  I was pretty much drained from bike.  And!!!  my budy who hadnt prepared nearly enough for the swim catches me in the run, tells me he got pulled outta the water at 100 yrds hypothermic but no one realized he got outta the boat and continued through race.  He freaking beat me!!  Didnt even get disqualified!!!!

That sounds like a really really tough time.
You monstered the bike.
Don't compare yourself to someone who had time to rest and fuel while you were toughing it out on the course.
OWS is way different than the  pool. It is hard to even compare the two.
Don't quit!
Don't quit, DONT QUIT.
If you can power through that situation, just think what you would do when the water is NOT cold (or you have a wetsuit), the bike and the swim course are familiar to you.

I totally agree with Robin!
Swimming in an 80 degree pool, is nothing like swimming in a 65 degree lake. The cold water is what impacted your HR.
Your friend did not beat you! He did not swim the distance, he hitched a ride! He SHOULD have been disqualified!

I know, I do the same thing. It is hard to do less than what you expectated no matter if those expectations were not in line with conditions out of your control.

One thing you did show is the spirit of a true Triathlete. You adapted and finished despite the changes and the conditions. That inner fire to finish strong (if not extinguished) will take you far. It tested your metal and you still finished

I'm so impressed that you finished the dam thing! Really. Have yet to do my 1st tri, and you actually finished - I'd be p.o.'d too, esp about your buddy, but he'd be at the end of a long list of other folks who've also ticked me off, and to me this triathlon thing is really mostly about me, and what I can push myself to do. So, FWIW, I give you a lot of credit for hanging in there in cold water - you animal! - and getting through it. (am also very happy that my wetsuit is in the mail on its way to me from xterra as i type this....).

Then again, there've also been times in my life where I've SWORN I'd never ever do something again - like after childbirth - only to find myself relenting once the pain has subsided. So, give yourself some time to recoup & just take it a day at a time...

congrats,
marla

ransick - 2010-04-24 3:44 PM Ok. 1st blog post done.  http://blog.ransick.org  Now to find a way to have pictures look like they are or pictures.ransick.org (for free) without having to keep a server running.

LOVED your line "None of the people I hang out with are in to triathlons and they really don't care to hear about it." Ain't this the truth!!! ...now my mom's equally relentless in asking me if there's ANYthing else I can talk about these days....

Congrats on perservering and completing the tri in such harsh conditions!  Swimming in 65 degree water with no wet suit had to be horrible.  Look on the bright side, now you can tell stories and exagerate them a little more every year.  A few years from now the story telling will start like this "remember the year that they had to break the ice off the lake before we could start..........". :-)

Well my first Tri is in the books, I finished, beating my goal time by almost three mins.  My run ended up killing my in my class but whatever im pretty excited. Beating my goal time is pretty huge for me mentally.  Roughly swam a 8:12(400 meters), First in T1  47 seconds,  18.4 avg on the bike, first in T2 47 seconds, down in the run with 10:58 avg per mile.   9th out of 17 in my class, 4-9th being seperated by 3 mins(damn run)  134 overall out of a supposed 300

The weather during the bike was horrid, really strong winds at our backs going out, means in your face coming back in, and the hard rain didn't help, huge puddles as well.

Ill get a race report up as well

Good morning everyone!

Rise and shine!!!

What's everyone got on tap for today?

I'm going to hit the pool after work. I've got a half marathon on Sunday and my hamstring is feeling a little better, no running for me this week, don't want to agravate it.
