Sarah, your zones in relation to max hr will always stay the same given you were able to test at a true max hr. However, it is possible to raise your lactate threshold. Usually, that takes a lot of hard vo2 max work and gains are often slight. A couple of things could have happened here. One, maybe your hr was effected by something different today like stress level, nutrition, rest, or prior recovery. Maybe, your fitness has slightly raised your lactate threshold. Or maybe you you more rested than usually today and achieved a higher hr you weren't able to achieve before.

QOTD: securities trader. I trade in and out of large stock positions for our companies mutual funds and institutional accounts. I work all markets from here to Asia to Europe. I can work at anytime of day but my main hours are 7-4. Fortunately we have a gym at work I can use before I go home and there is another trader to rotate nights that we trade. It's not ideal for training but I make it work.

QOTD: I am a Corporate Finance Credit Underwriter for a big bank. I usually work from 7:30ish-5:00 and sit at a desk all. day. long. I start going stir crazy sometimes! It's definitely hard to balance working with training, and social life. My gym is also downtown so I go either before work and get ready there, or right after work. Sometimes I'll swim during lunch but it's a pain to re-shower and get ready again at the middle of the day. My portfolio at work recently got switched around which means that I will have to start traveling occasionally which puts yet another obstacle into my training. I am going out to Arizona next week---it's too bad I can't bring my bike!

I have recently realized that teaching all day has been really hurting my recovery time because I am on my feet all day.  My shins and knees will be fine in the morning, but by midday they are starting to bother me.  It's really annoying me that my job is getting in the way of my hobby....

I actually think it's better to be on your feet, under normal circumstances. Once you get over those issues, you'll be happy you're up and moving around some. That really helps the recovery process. Sitting in a desk all day is much worse as you stiffen up, accumulate lactic acid and cut off blood flow to the legs.

i think what he is saying is that he has no time to heal when he's standing so not sure if he will get over his issues if he can't heal any time soon.

and for the record, i'm an admissions director at an independent school. i do get up and move around, especially when i give families tours, but mostly i'm sitting at my desk all day too. i also teach yoga twice a week and my most difficult job is being a mom to an (almost) 7-yr-old and 3-yr-old boys. it's definitely a juggling act especially when you throw in their sports and activities too, but i have a really great husband who equally helps out!

Sarah - It sounds like the tri club meeting was informative and a good time.  Maybe I will have to check it out!  It is always fun to meet other tri people!

QOTD: Sarah's post about the team and eating no less than 45 minutes after workout brings to mind another QOTD. What do you do for recovery after workout?

So, I am a day behind on answering the QOTD, but right now my recovery consists of water or sport drink and chocolate milk.  I love that I have a valid reason to drink chocolate milk now!  When my workouts get longer, I will look into some other, more substantial things!

Henry - I found some flax seed at the natural food store, and am going to try it in my oatmeal this week - I guess I am just going to throw some in and give it a try!!  I was looking at the avocados at the store.  I am going to sound really stupid now, but how do I know if it is ripe?  Should it be soft?  You got some really cool toys.  I am such a toy geek, I love them.  Let us know how you like everything!

Richard - How is your knee doing today?  I hope it is feeling better!

Karen

Hey Karen! Choco milk is sooooo good. Let me know what you think of the flax. At least in my experience I've been able to use it in small enough amounts (yet effective in adjusting calories & nutrition) that I don't notice it, so try small first - like 1 TBS in a serving of oatmeal or something.

Avocados: A ripe avocado should have a little give but not be mushy. If it's as soft as pushing on your cheek it is too ripe. However, I often have trouble finding avocados that are ready to use. If you have to, buy one that is under ripe rather than over ripe. Take it home and put it in a paper lunch bag, roll the top and let it sit overnight. Check it each day until it softens a bit. Should be ripe within a day or two.

Haven't had a chance to try out any of my new gear yet, but this is the week and I'll bring back a full report!

Yesterday's QOTD: I am an Administrative Assistant at a Law School. I spend most of my time sitting at a desk (hence why you see all my comments & updates during the day) but I actually have a lot of freedom over my schedule within the work day & I'm able to get up and move around pretty much whenever I need/want to. I even have a room off my office where I go stretch on my really sore days. LOL I generally work 9am-6pm with an hour lunch. Sometimes I use that to run on a treadmill in the basement of the school, but it's kind of a pain to change, run, shower & change again.

Luckily my gym is just a block & a half away and on the busline straight from my house. I can leave the house and be in the locker room within about 15 minutes (faster once it's nice enough to bike outside) and I can wrap up a workout within 20 minutes of needing to be at work if I hustle!

I also work occassional shifts at a local non-profit art gallery/performance space. I support the organization and need the cash but those days are *long*. It means working out, working 9-6 and then working 6:30 - 10 or 11. I try not to get scheduled on days when I have to work the next morning, but it doesn't always work out that way. I'm trying to only work one of those shifts a month now until after my race.

I tried the ground flax in my oatmeal this morning.  I was a little afraid of it Embarassed, and I think I went a little light.  I only used probably 1/2 T.  But,  I couldn't even tell it was in there.  No change in flavor or texture.  Tomorrow I will be brave and try 1T!!  I think it will be a good addition!  When I go shopping on Saturday, I will pick up an avocado.  Every Wednesday at my house is pizza night.  It is an easy dinner, and I like knowing what we are going to be eating at least one night a week, without having to think about it.  Anyway, my husband gets a frozen pizza, and I make mine - usually with tortillas as the crust.  I like to use salsa instead of pizza sauce sometimes.  I think next week I will do that and put some slices of the avocado on it.  That way, even if it is not ripe when I buy it, it should be ripe by next Wednesday.  I will let you know how it is.  Make sure to let us know how the toys are!!

QOTD - I am an attorney.  I work for our county's legal services.  The good part is that my schedule is pretty regularly 8:30-5:00.  Occasionally, I may get stuck in court past 5:00 if we are in the middle of something, but as a general rule, my day ends at 5:00 - no work goes home with me and no work happens on the weekends.  We do not have any children, so I do not have any activities like that.  I workout after work, my husband has gotten used to never having dinner before 7:00 any night of the week!  Also, I swim in the mornings before work - my gym is on the way to my office, so it is very convenient.  And, I usually manage to find time on the weekends for my long rides or runs.  My husband has been really great about my training.  He encourages me to go out, and is patient and helpful when things don't always get done like they used to.  He's a keeper!!

Karen

QOTD:   I manage a Pest Control Service Company.  My job is physical.  Climbing, Crawling, Hiking, Lifting, Yelling, Screaming.  Just kidding about the last two.  The first four are daily activities.  Sometimes when I get home from work, I am really tired.  It takes a lot of self motivation to train.

I have an addition to the list for biking.

Never assume the the guy parked on the right side of the street won't try a U turn with no notice or even looking for that matter.  Almost got creamed the other day.  Millimeters.  My mind had already accepted the fact that I would be crushed and not make my race.  Some how I made it by.  Still not sure how.  Was so close.  Went for a 25 mile bike ride that went perfect.  Almost get killed in the last 1/4 mile.

that reminds me!

for running, never assume a driver making a right hand turn is looking at the sidewalk! I've landed on the hood of a car sooooooo many times walking downtown, and had many close calls running. It's gotten so bad I think Anne thinks it's not true! LOL I've been pretty lucky though to be hit by cars so many times and never gotten seriously injured.

interesting fact: I have the trunk my great grandmother immigrated here with from Ireland. I use it as a night stand.

I'm also mostly Dutch (50%) My dad is 100%. I had an Irish Catholic Mother and a strict Dutch Protestant Father. Wasn't that an interesting upbringing!!??!!?? LOL

Happy Paddy's day everyone.  A friend tried to convince me to join him in a local Irish pub for a few Guinness.  He will be there mid afternoon & well into the night.  Irish bands playing & plenty of Guinness.  I briefly considered, but came to my senses!

Although, I do enjoy a Guinness.  A meal all to itself, less calories than a regular beer & a great laxative!!

Man, am I that old?!?!

Who has the next race?  Anyone this weekend?

I'm enjoying hearing about everyone's careers. No repeats so far, right?

For St. Patty's Day my swim instructor had us do St. Patrick's Day trivia. If we (as a group) chose the right answer we got to swim 200m. If we got it wrong we got to swim a different 200m set. I learned several things. 1, while St. Patrick's Day was made an official holiday in Ireland in 1903 they didn't hold a *parade* until 1931. 2. Swiming the "corkscrew" stroke makes me a little dizzy, but not too bad. and 3. I am the slowest swimmer in my Master's class. AWESOME! LOL

QOTD:   This is always the hardest for me to answer.  Actually, I am not really sure if I can answer it.  Swimming often feels like a pain and is hard for me to get motivated to go swimming because it's such a hassle to get to the pool and such.  I think that it may be biking, but it's been such a long time since I have actually ridden a bike outdoors.  I think that I only rode a couple of times since my last triathlon!  When I am able to run, I do truly enjoy it.  I also love that it's just me and the road.  So, I have done a great job of completely avoiding the QOTD.  I think that I have even confused myself at this point!  I guess I love the triathlon because it is quite the challenge to become proficient at three sports, but you are allowed to have a "weak" event.

QOTD: the bike. I came from cycling. I did some mountain bike races before tri's and did a lot of cycling with friends too. Bikes are definitely the most fun thing to buy! I'm really starting to love to other two sports just as much though. I'm finding great satisfaction with progress in running and swimming. I'm with Michael though, it's such a hassle to get to the pool.

Not sure but I might have the next race.  Next weekend.  Wow it comes up so fast.  I wanted to let everyone know that I tried another open water swim today.  The ocean was not really suitable for swimming because it was choppy and windy.  But that was not the point of the swim.  The point was to try and put hot water into the wetsuit prior to entering the 54 degree ocean.  I struggled with the cold a little last time and someone had told me to try this.  So... I dumped 1/2 gallon of pretty warm water into the suit (that felt great) and then went into the cold.   What a difference it made.   I will never be able to do it without the hot water now that I tried it.  I harldy felt it.  I was cold on my face, hands and feet.  But even they didn't feel as cold as last time.  Last time, I felt numb.  This time just a little cold.   My core and legs stayed comfortable.  I could feel the cold water,  it just never got extreme.  I don't know how many of you swim triathlon in the cold lakes but my race is expecting 55 degrees.  Wetsuit is highly recommended it says.  I will be the only one feeling great now that I know the trick.  Anyone going for a cold swim should try this.

QOTD:  I used to hate all of it.  Bike, swim and run.  I hated equally.  Now...  I still hate them.    My favorite time is when it is over.   I like how I feel when I am done.  I like the progress I have made.  I just hate it when I am doing it.

QOTD: I love them all! *sometimes* Haha. Definitely a love-hate relationship with all 3 at times. I love biking but I still hate that I am so scared of falling. I also hate trying to find somewhere to ride where I don't feel like I'm going to get hit by a car! But when I'm going, it's so great and I love it. And I love all the toys and gear that go along with it! Running I love when it doesn't hurt...shin splints and knee pain suck, but when I feel good I feel GREAT. And I think that what I love most about running is that it prevents me from feeling the way I do when I DON'T run. Seriously, running is my therapy--when I can't do it I am an anxious, grouchy, mess. And swimming. Oh, swimming. I hate the first step of getting in the pool, I hate smelling like chlorine, I hate swallowing water, I hate the goggle marks, I hate how it sucks all the moisture out of my skin. But I love the progress I've made! I love when everything feels right and I just glide through the water. I love how strong it makes me feel, I love how my arms are pleasantly tired when I'm done.

I'm just kidding around with saying that I hate things because overall I just love everything. Even with the obstacles, I am absolutely loving the training, it makes me feel so good. The sense of accomplishment I get after every workout is amazing, even after the rough ones. I honestly cannot wait for my first Tri on June 25 to see how all my hard work has paid off.

swimming. i love the water.  i'm not super fast, but i do think i have pretty good endurance. another reason is because it's a low-gear sport and i'm not into gear and gadgets.

i'm an idealistic runner (as in: i want to be a runner!). i probably read up and research running the most.  but it's taking me some time with all of the stomach issues i have after running at 5 miles or more.  i'm confident, however, that with time and additional training i'll keep progressing and my stomach pains after running will subside some day.

biking...uh, not so much.  i think i'm so great after a hard spinning class, but when it comes to the road, sad. i don't even own a road bike- i'll be doing my first triathlon with a mountain bike this summer.
