Woke up this morning to an unexpected rain. Ran 1 hour. Did 5 decent 3 min intervals with 3 minute recovery. I was supposed to do 3 total but went ahead and did 2 more. I wish now I had only done 3.

Peter you are a madman! But I love it.

Check what the slayer did to the local roadies yesterday

http://antelopeathens.blogspot.com/2011/02/real-tall-boy-dishes-out-watts.html#comment-form

Today was running too. 15x 200m at LT pace and 200m jog rest was the main set. Not been in the pool in a week though...

well, the more i keep hoping my super fun new cycling shoes show up... the more i think about (POSSIBLY!) picking up a trainer so i can start really training at home...

do you guys all have trainers?? what make/model are they & how are you enjoying them so far??

mgalanter-- i know you recently got a road machine.... curious to know how it's treating you (or vice versa) so far!

i have both the kurt kinetic road machine and the new lemond revolution. i think i would advise you to get the lemond if you can afford it when the computer is out on it ( they have delayed the computer release until later this month).

then you have a power device built in and wont tear up your rear tire like a normal trainer does. i think you can get a computer with the kk but i found it awkward to use so i would steer clear of it and just use your own cateye for data unless you dont have one.

especially if you live in a cold part of the world you need a trainer to keep fitness. here is a 10 sec clip of me abusing mine at about 600 watts for 10 secs to show my trainer what it looked like. he didnt think a trainer would be that hard to ride.

Harvey,

You must really impress the rodies around Atlanta. Big guys pushing big watts on the flats are an impressive sight. In my area you have to be a great climber to impress the rodies. Its a little tougher for the big guys.

At 600w 10 seconds seem to last forever. You look very comfortable in spite of your quads being on fire

I have a CycleOps 2 and a KK road machine. I like the CycleOps better because it seems to be a little quieter and I like the way it holds the bike. Either one would be fine in my opinion. To really get fast, I think you almost have to have a trainer to get in consistent work-outs. The weather is just too unpredictable and it is hard to get in safe, quality work-outs when the weather or light is bad.

interesting...
i'm definitely realizing that spin classes will only get me so far (where my cycling goals are concerned...)
but i don't want to break the bank (or take up too much space permanently in the basement)

two options i've found so far are:
blackburn fluid trainer- $250
kk road machine- $270

(still have a long way to go & research before actually snagging one...)

The only roadies I impress are the medium grade ones. Not the real thing like you are referring to. But I would give it the old college try if I ever come up your way. The trick I learned on hills is to suck it up and pedal as hard as you can and as long as you can no matter how big you are. You figure they are suffering too even if they are light and thin.

I think hills are very psychological. Once you let them get in your head, they own you.

as to the trainers, given the option between the blackburn and the KK, KK is generally universally praised so I'd go in that direction. ITs held up to my pounding it pretty often and hard at my size. 270 will be a very solid investment if you can tolerate riding indoors, which suits me fine.

Just from reading your post, I think that is you universal answer for most challenges. I take a kinder and gentler approach to hills. I carry as much momentum into the base and stay below my threshold as much as I can on the rest of the climb. I may drop back early but usually end up passing all of the riders who empty their tanks too early. The ones I don't catch, I probably wouldn't catch anyway.

A trainer and bike is living room furniture not something you put in the basement.

I value a cerebral approach and admittedly I do consider the slope elevation and distance while measuring it all out, but I still am more of a grunt on the bike and thats why my bike times are rocking while my run times are slowing.  Punish or be punished but then suffer the rest of the way. Its a dilemma I continue to try and solve. However, I'd rather empty the entire tank on raceday because of all of the anticipatory anxiety leading up to it....

Nic-
I have a CycleOps 2.  Got it for Christmas.  (I got a heart rate monitor for Valentines's Day.  And my bike was my birthday present.  Thinking of going clipless for my bday this year).  I like it quite a bit once I got used to it.  The nice thing is not having to rely on a spin class schedule or weird lamaze-breathing instructor (though a good class is awesome).  Now if I just didn't have to share space with my son's guitars and amps, the office paraphenelia, and the guinea pig.

i put my trainers in the basement facing the TV and next to the treadmill for bricks! BOSE surround system makes it go faster too.

Felt crappy today so I skipped the run and only did a swim.
Then a weird thing happened during my swim warm-up. About 500m into it I glanced at my watch and I was swimming 10% faster than before. So I kept going for a full 1000m and at the end I was 90 seconds faster than usual. I've been trying to fix my stroke & head position and today it finally worked - and the best part was that i wasn't even swimming all that hard.  I no longer hate swimming (as much).

I was kidding about the living room furniture but that is where  our trainers are sitting  at the present time. It makes it convenient to watch the kids and work out. In some warped way I feel like I'm spending time with my family if I can see them while I ride. I did have the bike in the bed room for a while but my wife made the comment  "you would rather ride the bike than ........" That's when I realized the bike needed a new home.

My wife and I did Spinnerval # 23 this morning. She took the kids to school while I ran to work. Today was going to be a big work out day but work got in the way. Still managed a high intensity abbreviated Brick.

CLASSIC!

bottom line: a trainer is on my wish list... BUT! it's getting so nice outside right now that i'll likely be able to take a bit of a spin around the block soon too!
(assuming the snow they're forecasting holds off....)
fingers crossed!!!

Nic - either you have a different climatic zone at your end of Toronto or we have different definitions of 'nice outside'.  Maybe I'm just growing wimpy as I get older.

Good work guys with shout outs to Mark for carrying on in the pool and Peter on the work front. Man its gorgeous here. I passed on the timetrial for the second straight year. $ down the drain for family sake. Will train locally and save that 4+ hours commuting.

This year I am being more sensible and I suspect my IMCDA will be down not just due to the tougher course profuile but also from less reckless abandon. One year wiser, one year slower but happier I guess haha.

Hope you all are getting some good work in, training or racing wise! Lets hear from you how you are doing. lisaB is out at that timetrial that I skipped out of. I hope she destroyed that freakin thing!

Nice here too. Headed to the mountains with my wife and riding buddy. Hope my wife doesn't  crush me on the climbs.

In my short tenure in Toronto I remember about 2-3 nice days out of 4 months. I have a lot of respect for you guys training there. I will say Hi to you fellow countrymen who are now riding down here.

Full support of cycling in the local community. I'm not sure if I'm the type of biker they are referring to but I'm OK with the concept. Great story to follow at some point but I need a little time to write it. Off to ride the Swamp Rabbit Trail with the kids.

Nice pic, Peter!  Looks like you're having fun.

Nic: I have a KK and it's great.

I had a private swim lesson today.  It was really great and I think I'll improve quite a bit as a result.  The coach identified some areas where I can improve.  Really fantastic and I feel very motivated to practice.  The weather is crappy here today, so I'm going to shift my long run to Monday.  Tomorrow is long ride day.

I've been feeling a bit fatigued.  Not in a bad way, but I feel like I really need an afternoon nap.  Is this just a result of the build up in training?  Obviously, that makes sense, but I'm just wondering how you all deal with this/if you deal with this.

I know exactly what you are talking about with the fatigue. You have no choice but to deal with it. I would fall asleep at my computer screen at work. You wake up in the morning, bust you azz, work, then crash and recover. The next day repeat. There is defiantly an additive effect. Workouts done 2-3 days earlier start to take their toll. I didn't do very well with my 1st IM so Harvey is a better resource to learn what to do to do well. I will do much better next time.

Swim lessons are very helpful indeed! I am kind of just not very enthusiastic about my swimming times improving all that much. I just want to get the endurance to go IM pace for IM distance without coming out too tired. For me, IM pace is like 2nd to 3rd gear on a 5 speed car engine.

As to the fatigue question, I think you have been traveling alot lately from what I recall. This messes me up moreso than straight working out. However, combine the two and you are bound to get tired. I think the best advice you can get is to "listen to your body". You know it sounds so clique (sp?) but its true. Make sure you are getting enough rest and sleep, recovering well after workouts with nutrition/hydration, eating decently, avoiding too much booze (yeah right for me haha), etc.

I think for you with a June IM (like me) we really need our key workouts to go solid. That means doing all the right things and getting to bed on time. You're better off pushing a junk workout than doing it if you are overtired.

Peter: cool pic! Looking forward to the stories of your trip. I also think you are bound to rock it out way better on your second IM just by virtue of experience. You now know what it takes.

The potential problem that I see for you is that your work is so demanding. I wonder how you MDs can get the long workouts in with all those demands on you guys. Apparently there is not much give in your schedules like mine...

I hear LisaB   kicked some tail at the TimeTrial! I won masters at a local 5k instead (but it was a smaller one). How you all doing? Today I need to get my butt in gear and do a 45/4 brick and tomorrow I took off and will do a 3500-4k swim than a 80/4ish brick. This will do wonders for my confidence if I can pull it off.

Was very fatigued this morning. Forced myself to run. Instead of running my normal route I took a direction straight towards the mountains. There is a winery there that we frequently bike to. Wife met me there and we had lunch and a glass or two. Turned a blah bad weather day into a nice recovery run/ wife time day. Trainer time tomorrow followed by swim.

Hope everybody is putting hay in the barn now. Races will be starting shortly.

Was passed by a team of Canuk cyclist today. I still don't understand why I can cycle for miles and runs kill me.
