Sorry for the blank message above - i keep having issues with getting messages to post...anyway, just wishing all who are racing this weekend good luck!

I'm hoping to change my rear tire from my training tire to my everyday tire so I can start riding outside in some group rides next week (soccer season for daughter is done, so as the coach I now have more free time).  I'm also looking forward to beginning running again this weekend...disciplined style.  Its harder than it should be for me.

Go Jackie & Ernesto!  You are likely racing at this very moment.

My hubby & I got to meet Jackie and her friend for dinner last night.  What wonderful ladies!  Had a great time, and hoping our paths cross again....maybe at Disco (hint, hint)!  Think we just might have another triathlete in the making in Jackie's friend too .

Cycling & running going well in training, but swimming oh boy! Did my first open water swim at 5:30 this morning with the Chicago Lake Monsters ( open water swim group). When I say I made every rookie mistake possible, I'm not exaggerating. The water temp was about 55 degrees with some swells. I did not sight well and couldn't see anyway because my goggles were fogged up and it was foggy on the lake. I always had sight of the shore but when I realized how far away from it I was (only about 100m) I panicked! By the time I got to the wall my heart was beating out of my chest. I was exhausted. Total swim, about 400m. I've got a lot of work to do in the next 2 weeks.

Dinner was fun with you and Kerry.  Yes, I think you have created a monster.  Judy was really thinking about the triathlon stuff all day today.

Chris,

Same as I told you before (on breaking the 1:40 half), on Saturday I GUARANTEE you'll be faster than 2:45 if you don't have flats or other issues. Cross your fingers on that one (the flats). Smile

Ok Ernesto.  If that was a money back guarantee, you owe me all the money I'm paying you!  (So that would be a grand total of 0$. Check or cash is fine.)

2:48:17 or 37th out of 53 in the 40-49 male group.   My predictions were pretty close, just a few minutes over on the bike and transitions.   Overall, the conditions were perfect, but I wasn't.  Basically, I just don't have the aerobic base to do better at this point.  The half marathon was an hour shorter and didn't seem even close to being as hard.  This was hard. The bike course wasn't windy, but it was very hilly. Constant up and down, with one hill at mile 23 that people were walking their bikes up.  I had to get out the saddle.  The run was hard because I was pooped.  More details later.

Division Male 40-49, division place 37/53

Swim division place  34/53

Swim 32:46

Swim Pace 2:00

T1 3:04

Bike division place 43/53

Bike 1:22:45

Bike pace 18.9  (There's something wrong with this pace.  My Garmin says 17.6 and a distance of 24.19)

T2 2:38

Run place 10/53

Run time 47:06

Run Pace 7:35

Overall 2:48:17

Summary:  As a triathlete, I make a good runner.

On my defense: number one, I think my youngest daughter has been messing with my crystal ball; and number two, I wasn't counting on a hilly bike course. C'mon Chris! Why did you pick a hard one? Just kidding here. What I really want to know here is: did you have fun? That is why we do it right?

Also, like I told you before, your cycling will get up to par with the running abilities but time will be needed. Same with the swim. A well rounded triathlete takes time to build, and you seem to be a patient person, right? Wink

Well, I have to admit, it's a lot more fun to finish near the top of my age group, which I've been doing when I run, than worse than average, which I've been doing on tri's.    As I said in my report to my fellow Minnesotans, as a triathlete, I make a good runner.

But also I think my relative lack of training bit me in the arse.  This was hard.  Painful.  My half marathon just didn't seem either hard or painful. THAT was fun. My wife (a runner) really trains.  She follows a real program and sticks with it (and meets her goals).  I just tend to make things up as I go along, and my training volume tends to be really on the low end (and I think it annoys her that at least on running events, I do ok anyway).  And my bike and swim volume for this race was just really really low.  And it showed.  So I guess it wasn't that fun, but I learned something:  At least at the Olympic distance, you have to really train.   Next time I will.

I gotta tell you, 2:48 is not a bad time so being 37 makes the other guys incredibly fast! I guess I'm a big fish in a small pond here. I don't want to hear how fast the 35/39 men are!

Be proud, you conquered a hard day very undertrained. If it was easy anyone would do it, right?

Oh.  One more thing.  When I said it was painful, that wasn't whining about my time (that was the other 90% of my post).  No, by painful, I meant doing the actual race hurt!  For the life of me, I can't imagine how a much of a big bagful of hurt doing an ironman must be.

Congratulations Chris and Jackie!!! Good to see you're enjoying your races and getting motivated for more. Chris - 2:48 is a great time, not a bad start, you seem to be natural at this! And Jackie - if you can be first on your bad day, they better not show up on your good one... Way to go!

It is curiously a different kind. Going hard actually hurts more than going long, Ironman races just make the pain seemingly endless, but you NEVER go hard in IM. If you do, your day is finished right then and there...

Congratulations Chris, Jackie and Jen (just saw Jen's post on FB about her race) on your successful (and hopefully fun) races this weekend, and Chris you should feel good on your 1st Oly performance, it is not easy bringing the 3 sports together in a race.I just finished my Oly tri and it was a tough one due to the heat, it was 96F when we hit the run. However, I followed Ernestos good recent advice on Oly tris, and paced myself during the beginning of the bike and consumed my energy during the first portion of the bike. Trying to pace myself during the run was another story and could not bring my HR below 170, so I just went for it with what I had. Overall, I was able to improve my time by 9 minutes from my last tri 5 weeks ago with an overall time of 2:45, so E, thanks for the good advice and still good room for improvement.

Gabe,

Great results man!!! I'm glad you did so well and 9 minutes from one race to another is a huge improvement. Pacing always pays, good to know you applied the advice. What's next before the half?

Gabe,

Great job!  2:45 in 96 degree heat is outstanding (although being Guatemala, I'm sure it was a dry heat. Cool).   A 9 minute improvement is also huge.

Also, when looking for your race report (hint, hint) I noticed you are planning on both a HIM and a Marathon this season.  Are either or both of them new distances for you?

Woohoo!  Jackie you did great!  Sounds like a wonderful race day for you!  Very nice bike, and you are better at running than you think.  Yep, it's only a matter of time for Judy.

Congrats to Gabe, Ernesto, Jen and Chris!  Jen, those black toenails didn't keep you down one bit!  And Ernesto, you may not have been happy w/ the results, but I mean what do you you do to top an awesome ironman finish?

I'm very happy w/ my 10K today.  Garmin says 58:49, and I think the results page at the race said 58:38.  Either way, my nemesis of 1 hour has been defeated   Added bonus was getting 3rd in my AG.  I didn't do a great job of executing the pacing plan, but without the encouragement to pace it in the first couple of miles it would have been a wreck.  Having the support of you BT'ers running through my head got me through today!
