Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() rymac - 2012-01-20 8:49 AM I ran this morning..the coldest day of winter so far..10 degrees and 2 degree wind chill with snow. I was actually really comfortable but of course I could not find my dang baclava. The one day of the year I need it I can't find it. The roads are all snow packed which worked great for the yak trax. We are supposed to get 3-6 inches more tonight...woot! I also just booked a 10 day trip to my parents in Fort Myers, FL in April. Have any of you had experience with renting a bike from a LBS. They have a sweet Trek store down there that I was going to inquire about. Just wondered if anybody had done this before? I really do not want to be off a bike for 10 days. Gotta hate it when we need something and can't find it when needed... I know the feeling! Have a great trip down there- you are going to enjoy it, specially the warmth! |

Not much compared to a lot of folks, but I'm the quiet type. And, today is the 3 year anniversary of my start in the triathlon experience. Did my first tri workout (700 yd swim!) and at the time, was 20 pounds heavier than I am today. It's been a great ride so far...looking forward to more exciting milestones as this journey continues. That is Awesome! Congratulations |

On long rides, practice the exact way you want to race. Eat before what you plan on eating race morning and then use the same stuff you plan on using on race day.Good morning! i am so glad you brought up nutrition because this is a weak spot for me. the transition to the iron distance and where to begin practicing, etc. for my HIM i did a pretty usual break fast and had Gu chomps every ten mins on the bike with water. i brought two gels on the run and i know i ate at least one.
i know i need to have solid and practiced plan in place for IM Great advice- this is exactly what I " TRY" to do... |

![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-01-20 7:56 AM Lastly there is an interesting thread on pedaling technique in tri talk. Lots of good posts. Garmin will be coming out with their pedal based power meter system soon and I think we are going to see a number of threads discussing the 'benefits' of monitoring pedaling efficiency. Would be curious to here your thoughts and experiences on this topic? I could see it maybe point out issues, such as some of the stuff you guys indicated. For example, it might point out a very bad fit. You'd think the ache's and pains would show that. But I agree with what most have been saying, ride and it will work itself out, but assuming a good fit. |

Garmin will be coming out with their pedal based power meter system soon and I think we are going to see a number of threads discussing the 'benefits' of monitoring pedaling efficiency. Would be curious to here your thoughts and experiences on this topic? Pedaling technique is a total red herring. Meaningless in the extreme. Cadence is something I think you can play around with, although we will all default to our own preferred turnover and that's the way it should be. My coach has me doing some variable cadence riding early in the training season here and it's an interesting exercise. Makes me a little more aware of it, for what it may or may not be worth. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I use infinite in all my races. It works for me. All I need to do is change the calories for the distance. I find it incredibly simple to use and carry. I can mix up to 1200 calories in one bottle. I also supplement with Power bar gels as those are on course in WTC races. I could probably use about anything as I have a pretty "Iron stomach". About the only thing I can't use is solid food except bananas. I just can't seem to get solids down when I'm pushing hard. |

Geez Bryan! smoking FAST! - that is some serious speed- great job! question - how spent were you after that one? legs burning? breathing pattern? breath every two? Pretty pooped. Breathing hard but after a min or so felt fine. I was breathing every 2. You bet legs and arms are burning on that last 25 and I really pick up the turnover. they guy in the lane next to me went :56! |

![]() Fred D - 2012-01-20 9:43 AM I'm off to swim soon myself. I am a reasonably good swimmer 1:05 IM but do ot do a very good flip turn. What happens is that sometimes for some reason I bail on the turn completely. Anyone have any advice for me to get me through this? Meaning you opt for an open turn? Any idea why you do it? Unless it's some breathing or pain question, I think the answer is just do it..... |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You bet. So last year I was doing all my swim training on my own. My coach would assign me various workouts from the "Swim Workouts in a Binder" book by Gale Bernhardt, a great resource, by the way. I was swimming 3x per week, sometimes 4, and getting in around 8-10K per week. My swim results were pretty good in 2011, I had a really good swim at Vineman 70.3, breaking 28min. After that leading into 70.3 Worlds, I lost a lot of my swim focus and was only swimming 2-3 times per week and just lost focus. Made the mistake of assuming my swim at Vineman would alsways be there when in reality, Vineman is just a super fast swim for everyone. Showed up at Worlds with the goal of making the top 5 podium and exited the water in 34min in 54th palce in the AG. Fortunatley I was able to ride myself into 5th and run into 4th, but I swore I would never let that happen again. So I made a committement to improve my swimming over the winter and that meant one thing: MASTERS. I ha dnever done it and to be honest, avoided doing it as I knew it would be hard and i would get my kicked. But I got injured and couldn't run much so starting in October, I joined Sun Devil Masters and began to swim at 5:30am 4-5 times per week, 13,000+ yrads per week. After just a few weeks I saw improvements in my swimming. Being in a group I found I wouyld simply "try" harder and I could make sets and intervals I never would even try to do on my own. Swimming doesn't get easier, I just got faster and my perception of what it meant to swim hard changed. |

Another Infinit user, although I am looking for a new way to do the concentrate if I keep using it. having to reach down and/or back twice to take Infinit and then water is kind of a PITA. Myabe a frame mounted hydration system.... I don't like the speed profile cockpit setup. Maybe the Speedfil but I've heard things about it good and bad, and I cant use the A2 system because I am on ski bend extensions. Who uses what and what is your experience? What would you recommend for and/or against? FTR, I am not all that concerned about being aero weenie fast, yes I spend all that money on a tri bike and HED 3s, but I really doubt that I would notice a 2% reduction (totally made up) in drag/yaw whatever. Could be wrong tho. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I keep the infinite in the seat tube cage and run a PD aero bottle up front with water. For me, simplicity was key. You have too many other things to worry about on race day and that is a solid simple set up. I don't believe a more aero set up would be that more beneficial for me at this point. I may use a single bottle between the bars for Oly's this year with Power bar gel and water mix. I have had some good rides in training with that combo. |

A friend runs the Speedfil frame mount with Infinit and the Speedfil A2 bar mount with water, so he has both tubes right there in aero. That sounds like a good setup, i just can't put anything between the bars (I don't think) |
