Living in Illinois you really get to appreciate a good hill. That is awesome that you have that option around you.

I never thought I would say this but I think I'm addicted to hills. I did 3000 ft of climbing on Saturday during a 40 mile ride and loved it. I did a 4.5 mile run on Sunday with 380 ft of climbing and wanted more. I'm now planning a 7 mile run with 700 ft of climbing for tomorrow. The legs must be punished! :-)

I'm lucky to live in an area with some nice variable terrain. I am one mile away from access to 30 miles of flat paved rail-trail as well as a vicious 500 foot climb.

I don't know if this will work but here goes. This is the run I'm planning for today:

I did it and my infatuation with hills is over for now. The 15% grade between 1.9 and 2 miles just wrecked me. Final distance was 7.5 miles with 814 ft of climbing. Ouch.

Those climbs look brutal. Nice work getting it done.

Got 2600Y in the pool this morning and felt good. I am hitting averaging about 1:46/100Y which means I have some work to get back to my 1:35/100Y average. Amazing how after two weeks of swimming how I can feel so much stronger.

Today marks my 4 week surgery recovery so I can once again lift over 10 lbs. Might start this week with some push up and core workouts and see how I feel. Looking forward to getting some strength training in again.

Nice swim. You and I swim at a similar pace, although my workouts are usually around 1500y because I'm always strapped for time.

I achieved a new PR today for 500y. Beat my old time by 30 seconds and swam it in 8:30. Slow by fish standards but it felt awesome.

Needing help as I can't remember.

Does it help if you ride in Z2 like it does when you run in Z2?

I completed the Sweet Spot series in Trainer Road over the winter and my now that I am riding outside you would think I haven't been on the bike since Nov. These last few rides have been sad, just sad with HR, RPMs and speed.

Maybe you weren't having a good day on the bike . Today when I was in the pool I felt like you. I wasn't hitting my normal times but I kept telling my self to relax and let it go. I still didn't hit my normal times but I knew that I just got done having a really stressful day at work so that could of been part of it as well. Try to relax and enjoy the moment. LOL!

Oy vay, what a week!

Life is getting a bit crazy as I enter my final month and a half stretch of law school. Workouts are going well and this week has been on point, I wanted to ask though, in the face of other obligations (for me that happens to be job hunt, tests, papers etc. but we ALL have our outside "stuff") How do you balance training? Specifically, how do you make the choice to shorten, skip, or alter a workout when you have "other stuff." I am struggling because I made the commitment (financial and otherwise) to do IMCDA to the best of my ability, but I am stressed to the max. Any thoughts? Advice? etc.

Have a wonderful weekend guys, Make it great!!!

Hi gang.

Yes it's the engine on the bike and the bike fit, not just the bike. Great deals are to be had if you know your size and keep your eye out. I got 3 Bontrager race wheels including a Power Tap hub and head wireless for $1800. One wheel would cost $1300 new without the Power Tap.

My hip is flaring up sometimes to the point that I have to run/walk. Not feeling too bad about that for longer distances any way. Galloway is right - walking a minute every 9 doesn't cost that much over a half marathon or marathon. I'd love to be 40 again. Not happening. Art Ritis and I will be racing together from here on out. The need is to adapt and I will. The main problem is the endurance is slow in developing because it's been so awful to run outside.

Swim is great. The semi private lessons with a swim coach made a HUGE difference. I really feel like I'm one with the water, faster, smoother,
not harder.

Bike has been great too. Hitting the workouts with last year's FTP. All good there. Lots of hill repeats on the Computrainer and they are really making me feel strong. Endurance seems good too.

Mentoring some triathletes and runners. Having fun with that.

For you heart rate folks, check out this site:

http://www.digifit.com/heartratezones/training-zones.asp?MaxHR=158&...

Helps figure them out. In answer to the Z2 bike vs. Z2 run, I think you'll find most coaches including Friel suggest HR zones are about 10 beats higher on the run than the bike. This site lets you figure both using several accepted methods.

Also, the following article if from Training Peaks. New today, I think. Great read on why we do so much zone 2 training.

Have a great weekend of training.

G'day Team,

Got my first long TrainerRoad (90 mins) ride in this morning, that makes four rides total (4 hrs 30 mins) in the last 8 days and I am loving it. It is SO much harder than just spinning at the gym and I finally feel like I am doing something constructive on the bike and feel completely tapped, but awesome when I finish. I am also feeling much more confident in that I will be ready to tackle chMelb when it arrives. Next up is getting back into the pool. That comes tomorrow morning. Then I start back with my personal trainer next week for some one on one sessions. The change of meds has really done the trick and I am feeling great.

Sounds like everyone is working hard, hope you all have a great weekend!

Hey all,
Simone, great job on the trainer. Txs for the info re Trainerroad. I think I will save it for next winter. I am hoping I can get outside sometime soon. Our roads are covered with sand and potholes. I have already dreamt I had a fall in sand. For now I stick to spin class when I can get there.
I did my 10 k yest. Added a cold to the physical ailments. So annoying!! The foot felt good going in cuz I didn't run all week but It's talking to me now!! I am stretching and will try the ball rolling stretch also. Two goals met, I finished and wasn't last.
I am crazy busy with work and the wedding is 3 weeks from today!! You probably won't hear much from me until that is over with. I hope to keep getting some workouts in, when I can and then I can plan a few events.
Be safe everyone!!

Good Morning Team.

It has been a while since I checked in to say hello. Been real busy with work and training is going ok. I did not mention this a couple of weeks back but had some medical testing done for a couple of things - got a clean bill of health - which was a great relief.

I will look back on some posts and try to get back on here again tonight.

Sorry for my abscence - but I'm back

April 5 - Skagit Valley Tulip 5K

My best 5k is 23:34, which was during a training run two years ago. Since that time my son was born, I stopped training, gained 20 lbs, started training, and lost 20 lbs. I'm back to the same weight as two years ago but have double the running volume under my belt, and hope to go sub 23 min this time.

This was a fun run. I did not PR my 5km distance, because it was a 5 mile (8km) race! I came prepared to run the 5k so it took a while to mentally readjust and form a new plan. I decided to shoot for <8min/mile with negative splits. I started slow to see what my heart rate would do, found it was relaxed, then slowly ramped up. The results:

Mile 1 - 8:26 min/mile, 153 bpm
Mile 2 - 8.01 min/mile, 161 bpm
Mile 3 - 8:18 min/mile, 161 bpm
Mile 4 - 7:32 min/mile, 170 bpm
Mile 5 - 7:27 min/mile, 178 bpm

Total: 39:38 (7:56 min / mile), 160 bpm
Place: 59/338

I relaxed too much on mile 3. There was a 55' climb right in the middle of the race and I slowed down too much for it. I kicked it up to 11 for the last 2 miles and just barely hit my overall goal. I'm very happy with the overall results. My body and gear performed just like I wanted them to. I do need to improve my pacing. I want to see a steady increase in heart rate during the race. I'm less concerned over my splits because there are hills everywhere, so maintaining even splits would hurt more than it would help.

Through a freak occurrence of lack of participants in the M 35-39 age group I placed 3rd. My first AG bronze lol. I didn't find out until I got home and looked up the results. I told my wife and she gave me a less than enthusiastic "that's nice"

I'm now looking forward to the Seahawks 12k next Sunday. I have some weekend work on Saturday night which has the potential to wreck my sleep, in which case I will run/walk it. I don't do well when I'm not rested. Wish me luck.

Hi folks, Sorry for the long hiatus. Work, kids, bad weather and tree chipping (due to the bad weather) and training seem to have gotten in the way of posting. Checking in for some help with wetsuit fitting. I recently purchased a Zoot sleevless suit in medium. According to Zoot's sizing chart, that's the right size for me. I tried it on this morning and it feels pretty snug. Once I got it on (which was a wrestling match) I felt like I'd be able to swim in it fine Having never worn one before, I have no idea how it should feel. Any thoughts on the subject? How hard is it typically to put one of these on and how snug should it be?

G'day Team,

Looks like everyone is getting some great workouts in, great job!

I am on week two of TrainerRoad and I am loving it! I can feel my strength and speed improving already, plus I've managed to lose 4.5lbs, so I'm pretty happy! I am so glad I joined, particularly considering it has been raining the past couple of days and it is so easy to fob off a road ride and be lazy. My bike is in my bedroom, so I pretty much just fall out of bed of a morning and onto the trainer!

Speaking of rain, not sure how much you guys know about Australia, but where I live we get inundated with drought. My mum has a big garden (1/4 acre), so getting 2.5 inches of rain in two days has been very nice, it is the most it has rained all year. It is supposed to rain over the weekend too, so I am going to try and get out on the Mountain bike in between showers and have some fun in the mud.

Anyway, keep up the great work everyone, and thanks again to Tim and Deb for kicking my butt and getting me onto TrainerRoad!

Sounds like fun. I like mixing up my workouts too, usually with a trail run. I'm just north of Seattle so rain is a part of my life. We had a record breaking March with nearly 10 inches.

Yes I love my mtb. It's a really good fun workout that's completely different to road riding. You work harder getting up hills, but don't notice it as much cause it's not boring. We have some great tracks near my home. I'm going to try trail running as soon as I am running comfortably again. I want to enter the Great Ocean Road Xterra event next year in March after my HIM. It's a beautiful part of the world where I do a lot of coastal photography so I'll make a real holiday of it.

A bit of bike porn. My bike, The Orbster set up on the trainer in my room. It just fit with about a foot to spare, lol!

The Orbster

I also splurged on some name branding for the personal touch!

The Orbster branded!
